EARLY ACCESS - We Watched Every Episode of Star Trek TOS (Full Series Discussion)

Our full series discussion on Star Trek: The Original Series will be posted on Saturday, but you can watch it right now!

This video is our discussion on the entire show guided by questions we got from you - the Patrons. We still have our Top 15 list video coming as well, but this has been a big editing project and rather than delaying the entire video it made sense to separate these 2 parts into their own videos.

Thank you for being a Patron & enjoy!

EARLY ACCESS - We Watched Every Episode of Star Trek TOS (Full Series Discussion)

Comments

There is a 1st Season TNG episode that involves some of the inner workings of The Federation. It just might make your head explode. *cough cough*

I have followed your journey from the beginning and I have loved how you guys have reacted. How you take into account the context of the era it was produced in. How you embrace the weirdness and appreciate some of the ground-breaking stuff they were doing. How you seem to get that the worst aspects of the show were caused by network and corporate interference. You guys get it. You GET it. You understand how special this show was and why the fanbase is so devoted. I'm 62 and have been a die-hard fan since I was 11 years old. I love all Trek, but nothing matches that seat-of-the-pants energy, wonky creativity and out and out joy of TOS. I find it very telling that you guys can remember stuff from the first season in detail after a year and 79 episodes but can't remember the Abrams movie. No slight to Pine, Quinto, Urban, Pegg, or Saldana all of whom did a fantastic job of channeling the energy of the original cast. But Abrams proved that he did not understand Star Trek at all. Where was the insight, the introspection, revelation and denouement? It was just another pew pew pew shoot-em-up sci-fi movie. Yawn. Star Trek 2009 and the subsequent entries were a hollow shell.

Thanks for answering these questions! Loved hearing your thoughts. Being more of a fan of the later series, rewatching along with you really helped me appreciate TOS in a whole new light. Being Scottish, when I originally watched these I often just couldn't get past just how bad Scotty's accent was 😂

I think a lot of the things you said about politics and not always being the end of the world are explored much more in TNG

AzoriusMage

Spoiler Alert: They seem to move a little better than they used to.

The first season is the foundation for the entire franchise. It's iconic. Speaking of which, I want to say something about "The Man Trap". People have been dumping on it for decades, ragging about how it's "too gothic", etc. But I think it's a great introduction to the series. It does an excellent job of introducing us to all the main characters AND the Enterprise, itself!

Rob

Since you mentioned shows from the 60's, here's a wild suggestion: "Mission: Impossible" was being filmed at Desilu at the same time as "Star Trek"!

Rob

TNG was remastered but the difference is that they didn't do new effects that differed from the originals, all the original film footage including the ship model etc. shots still exists, so they got it all out of storage, made HD scans and redid the entire post production, it was a very time consuming and expensive process but it was worth it, the show looks phenomenal. Only visual effects that weren't done on camera had to be recreated but unlike TOS they didn't make changes, they just recreated the original. The only exceptions were a few shots that were objectively mistakes, in one episode the Enterprise fired a phaser out of a torpedo tube for example, that was changed, everything else remained faithful to the original.

I understand why it bothers a lot of fans, but the use of casual modern language in new Trek doesn't, on its own, bother me. In SNW in particular, I think it works well enough given Starfleet's attitude of "we're definitely not a navy, just an exploratory organization". While most classic Trek treats that "we're not a navy, we promise" as kind of lip service, SNW genuinely takes that concept for granted and treats a starship as more of a standard civilian workplace. Yes, it's definitely a significant change in the tone, but I think it falls within the bounds of a legitimate reinterpretation of the premise.

So, I think it is safe to say that TOS will be better than your typical modern sci-fi, but a lot of that is the writers of 1965 did not learn how to write by watching TV, whereas in shows from the 90s onward there is a lot of satisfaction from the writers mentioning pop culture crap. TOS referenced Shakespeare where Buffy contents itself to harken back to Scooby Doo, and half the characters on TV sort of sound like Chandler. In the newest show, Strange New Worlds, one character even uses the phrase "pro tip" as if they are in the video game culture of the 2010s.

Thanks so much for watching these, I’ve really enjoyed watching these with you. I watched Star Trek in the 80s as a kid before TNG came out and it’s still my favorite show. One more thing you might consider, and it’s the closest to a lost episode, is the original pilot version of Where No Man Has Gone Before. It never aired in that form and wasn’t available until the Season 3 Blu-Rays came out. It feels a bit different with the Act breaks, different intro, different titles & opening theme, and some scenes that were cut when it was turned into an episode. Most people know about The Cage being reused in The Menagerie, but the original Where No Man Has Gone Before is often overlooked!

Apologies if this is a mess of a comment, I just go tback from having an injection in my eye so it's like being in a fish bowl. First off, thank you guys for starting the segment off with my question, that was really awesome. I wanted to give a shoutout to my personal freaky moment of the series, Charlie X. When Charlie is roaming the halls and he tells people to stop laughing, that young female crewmember who comes around the corner without her face. That is the stuff of nightmares. How long was she like that!? Did she die? I have questions! If that didn't inspire the bubble headed nurses for Silent Hill... Man... One thing Josh will be happy to hear is Star Trek does a lot of politics stuff in the future. Even in the movies. I think it was inevitable. TOS sets up a lot of things. Almost like setting pieces on a chess board. We know about Klingons, Romulans, Gorn, Tellarites, Vulcans, Andorians... We know there's the Organian Peace Treaty, we know there is a neutral zone... There's tensions, hostilities. Well you can only keep setting up things in the galaxy before eventually you have to return to some of those things and start adding layers. Which is really what TNG does when it starts to get really good. I've said this in the past, but TOS is very much an akin to an anthology, but with the same main cast. It's something that stays somewhat true through the 90s, where you have new directors, writers, but the core of the show stays roughly the same. If I had to pick a main strength of the original Star Trek is that it has such a diversit yof story telling potential. You can get creepy, you can do funny, you can do action, you can do political intrigue. The "format" of Star Trek, for lack of a better term, is very vesatile. Looking forward to that Top 15 boys. "We're goin' to court!!!!!" - Alex, every time they go to court

Thanks again, guys. As for characters, races, etc. you would like to see more of, if you truly keep watching ALL of the iterations of Star Trek, shows and films, you will likely get your wishes granted. Keep up the good work.

Collin Freeman

Agreed on all counts. Josh and Alex should really enjoy TNG and possibly DS9.

Collin Freeman

As a kid, watching the reruns in the early 70's, the Lights of Zetar scenes WERE terrifying. A close second to the entire Doomsday Machine episode which freaked me out big-time.

Angelaina Marie

The Gorn never got explored again in classic Trek, however I hear the current show Strange New Worlds with Captain Pike has an entire story arc about the Gorn. I haven't seen it, but I've seen people talk about that

Andreas Schmitt

I hope one of these days (in release order, of course) you’ll have a look at Star Trek Continues. Very much made with the look, feel, and spirit of the original.

James H

The stuff you talked about in "what would we like to see more of in future shows": You'll get ALL of that. Tons of alien politics, tons of relationship between the big factions, inner workings of star fleet..and one of the best TNG episodes is a court episode :) You'll get it all:)

Andreas Schmitt

Can't wait to check it out!
