UNCUT REACTION - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Nightmares S1E10

I guess the kid's power to cause all the nightmare stuff came from the Hellmouth. That seems to be the default reason for all the weird stuff.

If you assume things that are or aren't going to happen, you will probably be disappointed like you were in this ep. By assuming that a Buffy/vampire moment would be huge later on, you disappointed yourself. This wasn't a monumental episode, but it was good for character building, to learn a little more about them. Buffy's insecurity about her actions/who she is and how it impacts her non-Slayer life is a pretty deep moment and SMG killed it in that scene. We also see how bonded Giles is to Buffy already, her death being such a big nightmare for him. Not everything is going to be huge moments, sometimes it's good to just learn who these people are. The "lore" episodes, as you call them, are minimal given they had 12 episodes and had no idea if they would be continuing after that, so it's pretty self-contained. I hope you can find some enjoyment in the final 2 episodes.

This one has mixed reviews. It has seemed to rise up the episode ranks from the very bottom somewhat since it originally aired. I would think it's still bottom 20 though. Giles did discuss astral projection "the theory that while one sleeps, one can have an astral body which travels through time and space". A weak exposition, but there it is. All of S1 was created before it aired and I'm sure Joss wasn't quite self-confident to think that a show built on continuity would fly. I'm sure the network execs didn't - it was bad for syndication when TV stations would show episodes in any order they wanted. Therefore, he probably slipped in the overall story arc when he could because he had to do monsters of the week to greenlight the show. Prior to this, the only prime time shows that attempted full continuity were Twin Peaks and Babylon 5. Twin Peaks was the epitome of a cult show and was the top rated show in its first year. However, it crashed, burned and was canceled after year 2 (due to clueless network exec pressure, they revealed who committed the murder early in Y2 and therefore the continuity was lost). And Babylon 5 wasn't necessarily a ratings winner. It was a very bold move to do continuity at the time. After S1 aired and the ratings were decent, the WB signed BtVS for 2 more years. That allowed Joss to try his continuity experiment which ushered in the golden age of television.
