UNCUT REACTION - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Puppet Show S1E9

When I first watched Buffy 10 years ago, I remember this as the episode when I thought it was hitting its stride.

With streaming shows, episode lengths can vary considerably. It's different for network television. A specific number of minutes each hour are sold to advertisers, so episode lengths should be fairly consistent across a season. The number of minutes allocated for commercials has increased over the years. When Star Trek first aired in 60s, episodes for prime-time hourly shows were about 50 minutes long. When Buffy aired, it was down to 45. I believe network shows are even shorter now. This is why the Firefly pilot seemed overly long to you. It was two one-hour episodes stitched together (though they originally aired a week apart), minus a half hour for commercials and station breaks. As a side note, when a lot of us watched Star Trek in syndication in the 70s, scenes were cut out of episodes by whatever station aired them to make even more room for commercials, so it was nice watching them again with the two of you, and watching them in their entirety without anything missing.

It looked like you inadvertently talked over and missed one of my favorite lines by Principal Snyder. He was talking with Giles in the auditorium and made a disparaging remark about Mr. Flutie's lack of proper discipline. He followed that by saying, "That's the kind of woolly-headed thinking that leads to being eaten."

It's amazing how many shows came after Buffy, tried to emulate Buffy and yet Buffy still did it better. Many more examples of that in your post Season 1 future should you decide to go forward with the show. It's great that you both have a show-me attitude with Buffy. It should have to earn your kudos. We all saw Alex's reaction at 1:00 in the uncut 1x01 video. So, the joy of your audience will be watching this show win you over. And just when you think you can't trust the show to be smart (i.e., before the puppet-being-good reveal), you realize that you can always trust it (except for about 4 eps after S2). Surprisingly, you (and other reactors) have liked S1 episodes that the fandom has generally disliked; however, we're grading on a curve. I predict you're going to say "that was the best episode yet" many more times throughout the run. And, yes, I think it goes without saying that we want you to continue with Season 2 - if only for yourselves, not us/others.

The high school is used for many film productions. Right before Buffy it was used for Beverly Hills 90210. You will see the principal again. That actor played an alien on Star Trek at the time but because of the expense of doing the makeup they didn’t have him film every day and Buffy filmed nearby.

One of my favorite things this show does is subvert expectations. I love it when reactors predict what's going to happen and are wrong, and it's so great to hear that that's what you WANT to happen. Love the reaction!
