UPDATE on reaction to Star Trek TOS S3E19 - Requiem for Methuselah

After 73 Star Trek reactions and hundreds of reactions overall.. we had our first technical error that was unfixable. After recording this video, Alex's footage was corrupted and is gone. We spent a few days making sure there was nothing we could do to recover it, but after exhausting all options we have to accept that our first time watching this episode isn't going to be able to be posted.

After thinking about all of our options, we have decided to rewatch this episode LIVE on YouTube Wednesday April 12th, at 5pm US Eastern. The silver lining to this situation is that of all episodes we've watched, this one may benefit most from a rewatching. We were both very conflicted on this episode, because we found the first 35 minutes to be one of our least favorite episodes, and then the last 15 minutes to be a vast improvement. The video attached is Josh's initial thoughts after the episode finished. Rewatching this one live will be a fun discussion to see if our experience changes after knowing the reveals of the plot.

Regardless, we still apologize that we can't bring this first watch reaction to you. We have taken extra steps to try and ensure this doesn't happen again, but these things sometimes happen and we hope you can understand.

Still feel free to leave your thoughts about the episode in the comments. Hope you can watch along with us on Wednesday.

I always disliked this one because Kirk is out of character. Nothing is more important to Kirk than his shop. Yet after knowing she is a robot he stil wants to give it all up for her and fights over a woman, nope don’t buy it.

Blame Daystrom for your rogue technology.

I like the way you both resolve issues. This episode has never been a favorite of mine but it’s interesting how my opinion has changed over time.

Charles Regazzi Jr

I’ve never been sure why, but this is the favorite episode of Vic Mignogna, the creator of Star Trek Continues.

I don't believe that the writers understood Kirk. This may have worked as a first season Kirk but after so many flings I don't buy it at all.

My only problem with this episode is Kirk is totally out of character. We know he loves his ship there isn’t anyway he would be so torn up after knowing she isn’t real that Spock would have to use a Vulcan whammy on him, he wouldn’t fight flint at the end. Not a favorite of mine

I absolutely get what you're saying, but that ending really made it for me. When I'm rewatching this episode, I watching through the lens that we're going to end up there and this is all just build up.

Sounds like you feel exactly like I do about this episode. I really dislike Flint being this immortal who was every famous important person from history, and I agree it was also unnecessary. Like you, I thought the episode is largely a waste of my time, until that ending between Bones, Spock, and Kirk. Awesome scene, but overall a poor episode.

Your point about "now in ST canon DaVinci is always this random dude" is actually exactly what some of the rewrites that the authors hated so much were about, when Roddenberry was still doing them. Some of the scripts were written by absolutely excellent SciFi writers. However, not every script that is in itself a wonderful SciFi story also works in a TV show that has an established world and characters. And there was always this conflict between leaving the script of a well known writer alone and meddling with it maybe too much to make it work with Roddenberry's vision for the characters. And on top of that you then have people like Leonard Nimoy who have their own idea of what their characters should be like. I think those things all came together to get a lot of people angry at eachother with bumping heads. There was a lot of ego involved here. The entire DaVinci and Brahms thing was 100% something that would have worked fantastically well as an idea for a cool sci fi story, but probably should have been cut out for Star Trek... but when you do that you yet again end up with a writer that feels his script was violated... Listening to the audiobook about the production of the show it often feels like to me some of these writers got their feelings hurt from scripts being edited, and sometimes I personally wonder: If you want your writing unedited, how about writing a book instead of for a TV show. You are doing it because you want to see your story on national television and you know your short story book would never ever get such an audience, so maybe whine a little less. But maybe that's just me ;)

I think it's one of my favorite episodes of this season. For some reason I always mix this one up with another episode, so something in my head thougt you had already watched this. But I agree that this was one of the best final scenes. And I think over time, you forget the stuff that wasn't so great about an episode (even though I didn't mind the slow pacing at all) and just remember those hugely impactful moments. And Kirk's loneliness in command is a BIG DEAL for him as a character. People always make fun on how he has sex with a different woman every week but what most people that aren't that deeply into Star Trek completely overlook is how incredibly lonely the man is. That's what made the episode with him and the native american woman so special... because deep down that kind of life is what Kirk knows he gave up and will never have, and despite his love for the enterprise, there's a big part of him that always wanted that simple life with a special woman. And this episode was a big part of that character portrayal also. It had so much. Digging into Kirk's loneliness, into how much Bones and Spock both care for him. And honestly I don't even think Bones tried to be mean to Spock here... I think he seriously and honestly felt sorry for Spock from a deep sense of friendship, because he can tell that Spock probably feels just as lonely as Kirk does, just in his Vulcan way. After all, at the end of the day all three of them never had a family. And then you have that great message that if you love someone, don't force them to choose between people they love. They are not your property, and forcing them into such a situation can emotionally destroy them. I also like how Kirk realizes at the end how much of a fool both men had been, to fight over her like 14 year olds, when all she needed was given the space to explore her emotions. Instead she witnessed how she was the cause of hate between the two men she loved so much. I think it was a great script, probably one of the best in the show. And I personally like that they took the time to explore the situation a bit. Maybe a bit too much for you two, but I really liked it.

How can you not like a Star Trek / Highlander crossover ;)

Andreas Schmitt

I still remember recording a 45 minute let's play video I was really happy with only to later notice that I never turned on the microphone :D There's no YouTuber that doesn't have a story like this ;) Looking forward to the live re-do :)

HOW DARE YOU, do something not on purpose. Okay payment is you must rewatch Miri, And the children shall lead AND Turnabout Intruder ( the last one must be a watch then a rewatch and then rewatch) as punishment. Oh yeah and all episodes of Star Trek Discovery without having the dry heaves.

These issues brought up is a big part of the frustrations with season 3 because this isn't going to be the only remaining episode like this so be prepared for that as well as the outlandish and bizarre (especially The Way to Eden). That isn't to say there isn't at least one really good episode left but my advise is to take each of the remaining 5 episodes with a grain of salt. By this time in the 3rd season am certain everyone knew the series was actually getting cancelled and not just a rumor or threat as it was at the end of each of the first 2 seasons and so some sloppy writing, editing etc is to be expected.

There's nothing you can do when technology fails except move on. I understand and am looking forward to watching the live reaction. I've always liked this episode but I haven't seen it in awhile so it will be fun to watch it again and get your opinion.

Considering the track record of episodes watched versus tech glitches, you guys are doing really well. It's always a blast getting your reactions. We'll let it slide just this once. ✌️

Larry Hudspeth

There ya go!

Rob

What a great solution! Thanks! I've always found this to be one of ST's more interesting episodes, with a fascinating premise that Roddenberry will return to later in his career. I grant that it's more of a slow burn that many find unappealing. It will be interesting to see what you guys find worth - and not worth - revisiting on your second viewing! But it's great that ST is the kind of show that invites rewatching - certainly one of the main reasons it has kept fans captivated for so many decades! Meanwhile, bring on That Which Survives!

Rob

It’s that darn Q+A Josh sabotaging your equipment!

James H

As with our previous live watches it will stay up on YouTube afterwards and be posted a few days later here on Patreon. We will still make the edited version also.

Josh (Target Audience)

That's too bad. I won't be able to watch it live because I'll be at work, but I'll catch in later that night.

KatWithAttitude

It was bound to happen at some point. I think you've got the right idea. Turn lemons into lemonade.... Or lemon marang pie if you prefer.

Steven Johnson

Every reactor has had this happen at least once. I’m glad it was for one of the less popular episodes so the rewatch can be fun. Looking forward to Wednesday.
