UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TOS - That Which Survives S3E17

Oh no, Kirk's worst nightmare. There's a beautiful woman and he can't even touch her🀣 Yeah, I always had a soft spot for this one as well. Seems a lot of people really don't like it, but I think it's a very competent episode. It's an interesting idea that Losira left this computer to defend the outpost, but because it chose to model the defense system on her, her own personality conflicted with it's objective. I'm realizing on this watch that there is a lot of connective tissue with TNG's The Last Outpost, but no ridiculous ferengi to drag this one down. And yeah, Spock is really an asshole in this one. Kirk a little bit too, but nowhere near as much, and he has ample reason to be stressed out. Spock was just on everyone's ass for seemingly no reason. I do appreciate Scotty stood up to him though. The whole thing does add some comedy to the episode, but it comes at the expense of making Spock seem like a bit of a bastard. But yeah, good episode

Sulu also joined the landing party in Catspaw And oh no, now we know where the Disco writers got the idea to name a woman Michael🀣

I failed to mention the TV was bought at Sears and was a piece of junk. Parents spent more on service calls than they did for the thing when they got it. Watching Trek in color was amazing. It was also the beginning of my fascination with the subject of "is the command uniform tunic color green or gold?".

My dad bought our 1st color TV in 1975 for Christmas. Me and my brother had given up on ever having a color TV as we are Chinese Americans and my mom and dad refused to buy ANY Japanese products because of their negative WW2 experience with Japan. My Dad relented when he learned that Sanyo built a factory in Tennessee. We even eventually bought a Toyota

Like Ken Cullison our family didn't get a color TV til also 1975. I totally forgot that when I watched Star Trek initially 1 or 2 years earlier in syndication that it was in B&W. What a treat to finally see it in color later. Also back in the day you would watch it in syndication local TV stations would not play episodes in order and over time you eventually saw ALL the episodes BUT every now and then you would see an episode you NEVER saw before and you'd lose your shyte with excitement. The Devil in the Dark episode was one I had never seen for years and it was such a treat in the late 70s for me to see it as a brand new episode even though I had watched Star Trek for years. BTW this episode clearly shows Star Trek making every effort in the 60s to be inclusive with both Dr Mbenga making another appearance, the African American actor playing Scottys assistant and the new bridge member portraying a Hindu character all in all a nice touch.

Spock almost comes off like his season one self. It is very strange. Part of it could also be some of Nimoy's frustrartions showing through. He was heavily into his drinking problem at this point and was not happy that the show was in decline. Props to the whole cast, they knew the party was over, but they still give every episode their absolute best. I do think Spock's behavior in this episode regarding human behavior, and what we see later on in "All Our Yesterdays" does in some ways dovetail nicely with what we goes on in TMP.

Majel made it all the way up to the first JJ Star Trek movie where she reprised the voice of the computer. She really was the "first lady" of Star Trek.

Steven Johnson

The first time being shown that you could move during transport. This will be revisited during the movies and The Next Generation. As far as Josh's comment about watching in color, our family didn't have color TV until 1975 when I was 16 years old. Until then I only saw Trek in color at a Two Guys store and was amazed.

"I know what time it is I don't need a bloomin' cookoo clock!" I love this episode so much and a really enjoyed your reaction. The scenes between Spock and Scotty are some of my favorite in the entire series. Scott is one of my favorite characters and I'm always happy when he gets more to do. Great reaction.

I enjoy this one for similar reasons that I enjoy Tholian Web. We get to see Spock, Scotty and the crew solving problems as a team. This was another example of Scotty subtly showing his stuff. While you were discussing stuff Scott told Spock that while he couldn't explain it, that the ship "felt off". That was enough for Spock to run a check of the ship thereby uncovering the problem and the solution. Spock's behavior I am attributing to whoever wrote the dialogue just maybe didn't quite understand him. Or they were just going for a little comedy in a story that otherwise had none and just said "screw it".

I give this episode a B-. Again, nothing great, but also nothing bad. If I remember right, the landing party was supposed to include Chekov instead of Sulu but for some reason Walter Koenig was unavailable so George Takei got to have more screen time. That is why Sulu starts to give some fact about Siberia and Kirk says "If I wanted a Russian history lesson, I'd brought along Mr. Chekov." Also why they had to then substitute Sulu on the bridge at the helm with an otherwise unmemorable replacement (who had very little to do or say). I actually loved the story taking place on the Enterprise. That tension was more interesting than what was taking place on the planet. Also nice to see Dr. M'Benga again.

Collin Freeman

Hey there.... were you aware that the woman who plays Nurse Chapel also does the computer voice throughout the series? She's also the first officer referred to as Number One in the pilot episode called "The Cage." (Also seen in the 2-part episode "The Menagerie." ) She will play a recurring role in Star Trek: The Next Generation.... and is the voice of the computer in that series as well.

Tom Occhipinti

There are some still existing make up tests for The Cage and they had to redo it a couple times because it just turned the actress black. Same issue with Spock's make up. They had originally planned to tint his skin red like "the devil." But it turned him completely black, so they went withthe light green make up.

I do have a theory about Spock. In this last string of episodes for Season 3 we do see some bits of Spock being... Almost cranky. You'll see some more of it, particularly in "All Our Yesterdays" but Spock is... Unhappy. And, it certainly was not the intention of the writings, they weren't forming a story arc, but it does become something of a story... Element, going into the first Star Trek movie. I won't say more than that, but when you guys get to TMP I'll explain this comment in more detail. It's not a bad episode. It's certainly well placed. The back and forth actually works, and unlike in other A-B stories they actually give the action-centric resolution to the B-plot. Spock comes in with a red shirt and saves the day. Instead of, like that previous episode, Whom Gods Destroy, where we kept cutting back and nothing was really happening. You guys are getting near the end. I'm curious to see how you guys are going to feel about that. A lot of would be Star Trek fans get quite sad when they realize that particular party is over.

Steven Johnson

Episodes in season 3 like this with different lighting practical and visual effects such as how she collapsed in on herself into a black line and disappearing plus the moving set pieces of the (I want to say Earthquake but it isn't Earth) quake makes you wonder what new or repeat effects would've been used if we had seasons 4 & 5 but we will never know.

Brad Barter

You can google Aurora Borealis which Scotty referred to. it's a beautiful blue-greenish spectacle on the night sky produced by solar winds hitting the earth's magnetic fields. Can be seen in Canada, or Scandinavia or other such places close to the arctic. In regards to black and white TV, they did indeed have to pay attention to that. When they pick costumes or even the color of makeup, uniforms etc, they have to make sure that it also looks good in black and white, i.e. whether you can still tell that it's a different shade. Certain colors look too similar or too dark in black and white, that's why they chose certain colors over others.

Andreas Schmitt

DC Fontana wasn't happy with the way that her story idea was changed, so she took her name off the credits and used "Michael Richards" as a pen name instead. It's great that Sulu got to go on a mission for once (I'm not sure but I think this might be the first time since season one?) and was in the majority of the episode. Interestingly in one scene Sulu references the Horta from "The Devil In The Dark" (despite not actually being in that episode). A rare example of continuity :)

Dion James Pitman

Lee Meriwhether was Miss America 1955. She was part of Irwin Allen's Time Tunnel, Catwoman in Batman '66 and featured in a personal favorite, the long running Barnaby Jones. She's still going strong.
