UNCUT REACTION - Logan's Run (1976) 5K Subscriber Special

Comments

Well, I was hoping you guys would have liked Logan's Run more than you did, but I realize that not everyone is going to fail in love with it the same way I did. I was 13 when I first saw it and it's been my all time favorite movie ever since then. Still I'm glad you guys watched it and did enjoy your reaction video. Keep up the great work! There is no Sanctuary!

I think the filming location where all the youngsters show up to see Old Man at the end is still around and looks as it did then.

What does stand the test of time Is Jenny Agutter.

That reminds me, when Marvel adapted Star Wars for comics, their first issue was published in April 1977, before the movie came out. A cover blurb that said “The greatest space fantasy film of all!” resulted in an indignant letter to the editor from a Logan’s Run fan saying, “How dare you! There’ll never be anything better than Logan’s Run!” By the time that letter appeared in print, it already hadn’t aged well.

Just wanted to say thank you for the reaction video. Everything is cool as long as your honest which you guys are. Although this movie is a cherished memory from my youth even back in the day we saw its flaws immediately after Star Wars came out like 1 or 2 years later and we never looked back in awe after we saw Star Wars. I enjoy seeing what you like and don't from your prospective. So thank you Cheers

Sherman Lin

Not watch it in a long time and still enjoyed it. It think it has stood the test of time better than some of that era. Also as someone born in 1970 Jenny Agguter was an important part of my youth.

Perhaps you might consider reactions to the short lived TV series as well. There were a few Star Trek vets behind the scenes, most notably D.C. (Dorothy) Fontana as story editor. Even the infamous Harlan Ellison contributed a script. It was an intriguing show that was just beginning to find itself when it was pulled from the network, but not immediately canceled. CBS rather liked it and kept cast and crew on standby to continue filming for several months. A call that unfortunately never came.

Conan is a great choice. It's a fun movie that's very representative of the era in which it came out. It was Arnold Schwarzenegger's first film. He barely spoke English at the time, so there's not a lot of dialog to distract you from listening to one of the greatest film scores of all time. MXC is also a fun way to kill some time.

David Felgate

I haven't seen this movie in a really long time and I now remember why. For some reason I remember this movie being awesome the first time I watched it. Of course the first time I was 14 and me and jr high friends snuck a VHS copy and watched it. mmmmm connection between age and awesomeness? perhaps I am surprised peeps thought you'd like this. The first thing I thought when I saw this pop up is the two things you two don't care for.... slow and long (insert joke there). I should have pushed for Conan the B for a longer than 90 min movie. I have a pallet cleanser where no one will not like your reactions. You need two episodes of Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (MXC ) A game show that is truly odd and funny in dubbed english. It was shown on Spike TV in the 90's

In the novel they reach Lastday at age 21, and the cubs inhale a stimulant called Muscle which gives them enhanced speed and strength. Old Man Peter Ustinov is reciting The Naming of Cats by T.S. Eliot, which anyone who knows the musical Cats will be familiar with. I never saw the TV series because it aired opposite The Six Million Dollar Man.

deconstructionist66

solved close browser cleared some cache and all fine now, weird though it failed on laptop and iPad.

AzoriusMage

If that’s the case it wouldn’t have something to do with the video on our end. Might be YouTube or your web browser?

Josh (Target Audience)

I can't load the video it keep asking me to typing in the characters in the image but never accepts them. Seem like there is a faulty CAPTCHA on it

AzoriusMage

That point is 100% true. Unfortunately if the episode has completely lost our interest we still need to keep ourselves engaged to get through it without just sitting in silence. I don’t think that happens too often, but it definitely does happen.

I always prefer honest reactions to fake enthusiasm. Viewing some of the popular reaction channels is like watching episodes of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" on the Food Network. Just once I'd like to see Guy Fieri bite into someone's house special and say, "Nope, this isn't doing it for me." You don't always like the same episodes of Star Trek that I do, and that doesn't bother me, especially since you are always clear about why you like or don't like what you are watching. My only complaint is that when you don't care for a particular episode you are more likely to spend extended time making jokes and as a result talk over and miss a great character moment or a key piece of dialog that is important to the plot. I realize you have the closed captioning to fall back on, but there are still times where one of you will ask a question about what is going on which you should have known if you were paying attention rather than talking. This is a minor criticism. I still very much enjoy re-watching these old episodes with the two of you. Regarding "Logan's Run" in particular, I suspect my affection for it is based more on nostalgia rather than the actual quality of the film. I read the novel it was based on many years ago and my recollection of it is hazy at best, but I do remember that the cut-off age in the book was only 20, not 30 as it is in the film.

David Felgate

Thank you for the charitable interpretation John. I also understand where Michael is coming from, it’s not the first time we’ve heard that complaint. Everyone enjoys things differently and that’s ok.

Josh (Target Audience)

Yeah that’s fair. We try to balance it and give plenty of reminders that our reactions aren’t meant to be taken too seriously, but we can sometimes do better for sure. I’m just surprised to have this comment on this movie reaction in particular. We enjoyed watching it for the most part and while we had problems, we appreciated a lot about it, which we discuss in the video. We have been much more brutal in some of our Trek reactions for example. Regardless, appreciate the feedback.

Josh (Target Audience)

Right, I'm not looking for blind positivity or a paid "love" of what you're watching. However I do pay for other channels that are aware of their reaction coming off as potentially disrespectful and offer a disclaimer to the effect that it let's the audience know to not take their constant talking over the film or making jokes not noticing reveals in plots shouldn't be taken as an affront to the material. Sardonicism can sometimes be balanced with humility.

Michael Nemo

I can understand Michael's feelings - to a point. I too have felt a little twinge when you have not liked a Star Trek episode that I have always enjoyed. However - this is a reaction channel with two reasonable people, who are part of their generation, watching shows or movies that are almost 40+ years old. It is in inevitable that their reactions will vary from fans of that show from time to time. I appreciate the fact that they DO find value in Star Trek, considering that time gap. For instance, my father used to tell me about the Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials from the 30s and 40s. He wanted me to enjoy them. I watched a few and thought "Oh my god, this is really bad" although I did consider that they did the best they did for the time. One last point - despite the fact that I am a life long Trekker, I often enjoy criticizing the show, laughing at the occasional bad line, etc. It's all part of the enjoyment of experiencing an episode.

John5193

We will never take part in any kind of audience capture in order to make people happy or gain more of an audience. Our intention isn’t to come off as disrespectful, just raw and honest. We are not always perfect, but if someone wants to watch people just blindly praise everything in order to validate their audience, then as you said there are plenty of reaction channels out there for that. Appreciate your thoughts Michael.

Josh (Target Audience)

I see. And maybe only now am I seeing the difference in your reactions and other channels that I monetarily support where they handle their patrons' faves with grace and diplomacy and then there's this channel's "wit" that leaves it feeling a little disrespectful. Thanks

Michael Nemo

We definitely both have pretty sardonic senses of humor. It’s not for everybody, we don’t blame anyone if our channel isn’t their thing. I feel we are pretty transparent about that.

Josh (Target Audience)

You know I do like watching your reactions and such but sometimes you guys I feel are a bit irreverent for the piece your watching. Some of these films and TV programs have been in a persons life for years. They may have been watched when they were children. And if something is voted on as the most popular then I wonder if there is a missed opportunity on your part to treat the film or show with more respect to those that voted and those that love it.

Michael Nemo

I love Logan's Run but while we're in the 70s movie-wise a great sci-fi movie that is more relevant now regarding climate change is Silent Running, would be great to watch this classic on Patreon before we move out of the 70s and into the 80s.

Brad Barter

I don't know that I have ever seen the movie all the way through. I think I used to see clips of it on TV long, long ago. I was way too young to understand or appreciate it, but I seem to remember that it had some good visuals or ideas or something. I watched part of your end comments about how the movie suddenly got dull. I forgot about that. Imagine trying to watch a movie that suddenly becomes extremely dull when you are only a few years old! The Logan's Run TV series ran for 14 episodes between 1977 and 1978. I seem to remember it being a bit better except for not having the movie budget visuals. There's another sci-fi movie from a few years later in 1980 called Saturn 3 that also has Farrah Fawcett; it is supposed to be terrible, but it does have famous actors Kirk Douglas and Harvey Keitel.

Congratulations! …. This movie spawned a namesake TV series in the fall of 1977 that became an interesting relic of history. It was perfectly fine for mid-Seventies TV sci-fi, but by the time it hit screens a little thing called Star Wars had come out and changed everything. The Logan’s Run series, built on a pre-Star Wars platform, couldn’t generate much interest. Only 14 episodes were made, and the last 3 or so weren’t even aired. As I recall, some Star Trek writers were involved and D.C. Fontana was story editor.
