EARLY ACCESS - First Time Watching Star Trek The Original Series - The Paradise Syndrome S3E3 | REACTION

Shatner had great chemistry with Frances Nuyen (who played Elaan.) They must have had a good rapport after starring in 508 performances of The World of Suzie Wong on Broadway together (1958-1960)

"The first few episodes" being "Spectre of the Gun", "Elaan of Troyius", "The Paradise Syndrome", and "The Enterprise Incident". After that, it's miss, miss, miss, hit, and miss. "Spock's Brain" being production episode 6.

I wasn't saying 'Turnabout Intruder' or any other episodes were rotten, or even bad, but by comparison of the better S1 & S2 episodes, they seem pretty middle of the road. In fact, the whole season has a bit of a deflated feel to it, a lingering malaise or possibly a hint of defeated resignation....they all knew it was coming to an end, nothing could be done. With that being a very sad & depressing reality for them all, it's nice they could actually spin up to produce five or six pretty good episodes. Not ripping on S3 per se, but again compared to so many great earlier seasons' offerings....well, S3 is a bit flaccid.

I would add Day of the Dove to that list as well. The Cloud Minders is pretty solid as well.

...It's Shatner at his positively hammiest. To quote SFDEbris "Yeah, I'd love to comment on the subtlety of his performance, but I can't see it through all the chew marks on the scenery!"

The first few episodes were developed during the second season. Next, you will get a good look at Star Trek produced by Fred Frieberger,

Everyone gives short shrift to the final episode, Turnabout Intruder, but I think Shatner gives a fantastic performance.

Star Trek writers actually did 'kind of' bring back the Preservers in a Next Gen episode from Season 6 called 'The Chase', but that's a pretty weak episode IMHO (you'll get there when you get there), but the Exec Producer Ronald D. Moore said "he'd considered, but intentionally did not specify, that the ancient humanoids seen in "The Chase" were in fact the Preservers. He noted, "but this could be them and be internally consistent." " Also, I gotta say...buckle up for some deep mediocrity. By this point, everyone on the production pretty much knew NBC was killing off Trek at season's end & Roddenberry had lost interest, moving on to other projects. Also, most of the best writers had moved on and the budget got slashed (which is why there are so many episodes that take place on existing sets, i.e. on board the Enterprise). The new writers didn't really 'get' Trek and man...it shows. I won't go all spoiler, but I will say the ones I think upcoming that stand out or have some good moments are still a few weeks away: E6: The Specter of the Gun E9: The Tholian Web E12: The Empath E19: Requiem for Methuselah E23: All Our Yesterdays That's about it. The rest are either really mundane or, at times, just hilariously bad. Enjoy!

Others have commented that it would’ve been easier to swallow over a commercial break, and that does make sense

I've said in a couple of posts there were two weddings in Season 3. Well, now you've seen the first. You'll have to wait to see the other one. I always liked this episode despite the obvious flaws, but the next one is my least favorite of the series. I still watch it when I can stand it, though. In defense of the time jump. they did say right before that it was going to take weeks or months to get back to the planet because they didn't have warp drive. They couldn't very well show every minute that passed in the meantime.

Don't worry you didn't spoil anything, we watched it yesterday

Meh - middle of the road season three episode. It is, however, Star Trek so it is better than almost anything on today IMHO. I think I liked this one better when I was younger. I have really enjoyed watching the series in order. It has made me watch several episodes I haven't watched in 10 or 15 years - like this one. I had actually forgotten some things - like the pregnancy. I don't think I have ever heard anyone complain about this portrayal of Native Americans. This portrayal is pretty PC for its day - remember westerns were big in the 50s & 60s so this quite a positive portrayal. The next one is my all time least favorite episode - I don't even care if I spoil it for you it just plain sucks! Normally I wouldn't want to influence you guys but the next one should never have been made. To each his own but I haven't watched the next in at least 25 years. Maybe I will see something different in it after all this time....
