Finally we have reached what is arguably the best Classic Star Trek episode next to "City on the Edge of Forever"!!! Great story, great characters, great action......and great Star Trek! D.C. Fontana really nails the characters down, especially Spock. Leonard Nimoy has a story to really sink his "ears" into. Joanne Linville is outstanding as the Romulan Commander and I am left wishing we had much more of her to see. The final scenes between her and Spock are powerful and very genuine. The Kirk/Spock/McCoy triad is at play here, although we don't know it for a little bit. Powerful acting from William Shatner here. The scenes where his hand is shaking as he rages about Spock.... calling him a traitor!!! The Romulans are a welcome return and we learn a bit more about them. This isn't just a great Season Three episode, it is one of the best of the series! I am thrilled you both enjoyed it. I call this one "real" Star Trek!!

I do like this episode, and it is one of the best of Season 3. It is not the only one of the season where Spock has a love interest. A lot of people don't like the next episode, but I've always kind of liked it despite its flaws. The episode after that, however, is my least favorite of the series.

I've always liked this episode and it's always been in my top 10. Yes, the Romulan commander was a great character. Joanne Linville brought a mature sexiness to the character, as well as being a confident and capable commander. Joanne Linville died in 2021 at the age of 93, but she lives on in this very good episode

That makes a lot of sense!

You mentioned the helmets in passing. I wanted to point out there utility for the show. Vulcan ears were expensive. In fact the pair that Spock wore cost... I want to say something like 3000 dollars. Out of the make up effects artists own pocket, mind you. Because it took them so long to get really realistic, detailed, subtle, ears. Everything they made looked like monster ears or vampire ears. So the make up effects guy had it done himself by a movie-tier make up guy. So any time you see those really good ears on an actor, those were expensive to pull off. So a lot of the Romulan and Vulcan extras are seen with their ears covered in one way or another. Those helmets are originally seen in Balance of Terror, reused for Amok Time, and then seen again here. A cost saving measure, but also it makes sense given that the Romulans and Vulcans are connected culturally.
