Maybe taking Book off the ship was to make it hit harder when they learned the Operative was destroying all their places of refuge. Making one of them a beloved character instead of just nonentities like Mr. Universe.

Ironic that the two best SciFi shows made in my lifetime got screwed by the networks. It makes you wonder what could have been. However, B5 which was also screwed over, managed to get some extra seasons and it declined. Maybe, just maybe, Firefly and Star Trek ended when they should have?????? My intro to Firefly was really poor middle of the season saw a good one but was so confused I didn't pursue it - which you needed to do because the day and time was never the same. Saw a couple of more episodes before it ended and didn't think anything about it. The I saw Serenity - and it made me want to see more. I had friends who had the whole series on DVD and the rest is history.

It's a weakness of just about all TV shows that get turned into movies. That is "We're breaking up the crew." Now granted it's 50/50 with Serenity. Like, that was what was setup in the final episodes of Firefly, that Inara would leave. I don't know why they took Book off the ship, other than to have his reveal be a surprise. There was nothing leading up to that in the show, so something happened there. I think Simon punching Mal is supposed to be just another piece on the kindling that shows the crew isn't quite right. The problem is that the arc is pretty "wobbly" for lack of a better term. I had a friend back in the early 2000s who was a huge Joss Whedon fanboy. Loved Buffy. Loved Angel. He was the one who told me to watch it. So I got it on DVD... In... 2005 or 2006 when it first came out on dvd. After I watched it I told him I really enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for space-based Sci Fi. I love the idea of having my own ship... and Nathan Fillion was built to be a leading man in a show like this. He has that Earthy feel. So I told him I thought it was a lot of fun, and he told me about Firefly at at that point. Went to BestBuy and got the series. Binged watched it. Watch all the extras, the BTS stuff. Went back and watched the episodes that had Joss Whedon's commentary. Few years alter I watched all of it again with the movie just like you guys did. It's a great little universe... and I absolutely do not want them to ever remake or reboot the show. I just don't see it working without Tim Mineer and Joss Whedon. They gave the show the voice that it had. The movie is very focused on finishing the Simon-River story. The movie had a pretty tight budget for what they wanted to achieve, remember they had to basically rebuild the whole of Serenity for the movie, and that wasn't cheap. Especially since it was one big set. Well.. It's split, but I won't tell you where they hide the edit. I do agree, it's a shame the film didn't take more time to give the characters more. The reality was this was the last hope to finish the story, and that really became the focus. I just can't see the films or the series really going on without Wash and Book. Book was always speaking to Mal's spirit and he seemed to be building a bond with both River and Jayne. You can't just kill him off and carry on. Same for Wash, he was so much like Kaylee, the voice of innocence and reason. So, in that sense im glad it ends and it ends clean. No need to do a sequel. A lot of people wanted a prequel film where we saw the war with the Alliance... I personally don't see that as being all that compelling. I think it would mak e agreat little bonus if you guys watched the blooper reels for the series and the movie.
