UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S1E14 Balance of Terror

The episode with the next highest vote total in our poll is Balance of Terror!

This was one of our first "controversial" Star Trek reactions, and it is also one of our most viewed on the channel. Will seeing our full uncut reaction make our thoughts more agreeable? Probably not, but check it out anyway!

We should have time to post one more season 1 uncut reaction in the next week before we start season 3 so if you haven't yet, go vote in the poll to decide which episode!

TOS Sex Scoreboard ep 13 and 14 Kirk 1 NEW +1 Bones 0 Spock 0 Extra: Lt Martine and Lt Tomlinson NEW +1 Ep 13 SCCCOOOOOOOORE!!! Kirk gets down and dirty with an actress. To be fair, my first time was also with a hot pycho blonde that thought she was an actress in a play. Regardless, it is time to put a notch on the bed post for Kirk. If you have any doubt and think it was a leap to assume an off screen romping just remember something Lenure said. There is no way that a woman finds a way in a conversation to say “pulsing and throbbing” and it not end up in pulsing and throbbing. Just saying. Ep 14 no mains but the beautiful shagging of Lt Martine and Lt Tomlinson is assumed. I am sure they snuck off for a closet quickie in the phaser control room. FIRE (I would have said shoot but that seemed to dirty)

So, I saw on the YT channel you released a whole video addressing backlash to your reaction, and I don't really get it now. I mean perhaps you weren't as enthusiastic as some might like, but it certainly didn't come across like you hated it. I'm certain comments on YT have addressed it, but in short, the peace treaty was always a tense one. Both sides fought each other to a standstill and basically texted each other to stay out of one another's yards. With this new ship that has both an invisibility cloak and an incredibly powerful first strike weapon, the Romulans basically got confident enough to violate the treaty and test Starfleet's response by attacking the outposts. Especially since the combination of their 2 abilities makes it near impossible to positively identify the attacker. As to why the Enterprise had to attack, basically it boils down to 2 possible outcomes. 1 - A bloodthirsty Praetor (romulan leader) sees his new superweapon enter federation space, destroy several outposts, and escape untouched, and is therefore emboldened to build more such weapons(having proven their effectiveness) and launch a full scale war against the federation. 2 - The Romulan "wunderwaffe" is hunted down and destroyed by the first federation starship, casting serious doubt on a war ending in the Romulans' favor, making them back off. The federation would rather let the loss of the outposts slide rather than commit to a full scale war. As long as starfleet doesn't commit to starting a war, the Romulans can count themselves lucky they only lost their new superweapon. My biggest criticism is the overly literal adaptation of submarine warfare, particularly with everyone whispering. You're in space, it's a vacuum. Be as loud as you like. If Checkov were around, he could start belting our the Russian national anthem🤣. Sonar won't pick it up. Also with over 400 people on board, it's really shitty the guy about to get married is the one who dies. Like Spock couldn't have maybe saved him and let the racist asshole die, lol? Mark Lenard was the real highlight of the episode though. I do love that the character is so torn between duty and a desire for peace. An adversary, but not really a villain. At any rate, if for no other reason, I love this episode for introducing one of my favourite species in the Trek universe.

Oh, and full steam ahead to the third season, where Scotty has a hair nervous breakdown and sports a pompadour, and Uhura goes full Afro. LONG LIVE SPOCKOS BRRRAAAIIINNN!

I haven’t watched any of these early first season episodes in a long time, and I’ve been following along with your watch along‘s, and I am impressed by how different these early episodes look. Amazing, marvelous photography. Very lovingly photographed. I think I see now why they fell behind in production. Such photography takes a long time to set up and I think it caused them to get behind. I really hope an urge for you guys to watch this one again individually, with no interruptions. Now that you’ve got two seasons under your belts, This will be more enjoyable because you know the characters better and it will make more sense. One funny note is that I’m sure a lot of people who viewed these episodes on TV would most likely have seen “journey to Babel “ before seeing this episode and they must’ve been OMFG! THAT’S SPOCK’S DAD! lol!

Both films are on you tube. Just type in their names and up they pop.

This is still one of my favorite episodes. In fact, I liked it so much that I watched two of the movies on which this story is a thinly veiled adaptation: <b>The Enemy Below (1957) </b>(1:38) and <b>Run Silent, Run Deep (1958)</b> (1:33). Also, the retelling of the scene between Dr. Boyce and Capt. Pike was nice to see. If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend viewing these two movies if for no other reason than to see how different plot elements from them ended up in <b>BoT</b>. (<b>TEB</b> is available on Amazon Prime (w/ads). <b>RSRD</b> is only available for streaming rental.)
