I am sure that they chose the name Adama for Adam, the first man. In the Simpsons the father name is named Homer for Matt Groening's father Homer Groening, so I think when they were looking for a name for Homer's father they decided to go with Abraham Simpson as Abraham is the patriarch of the Abrahamic religions,
