UNCUT REACTION - Serenity (Firefly movie)

Here is our full uncut reaction to Serenity

We start the year by finishing Firefly, a show that we have both fallen in love with over the past few months.

This is actually our longest reaction ever so far, but it didn't feel like it!

Thank you for being a Patron & enjoy!

UNCUT REACTION - Serenity (Firefly movie)

Comments

They hired Summer Glau (River) for her ability to perform those action scenes even though in the series they elected to make zero use of her physical talents. They were slyly sitting on that, patiently, for some season 2 / 3 shocker. Could you imagine?? A lot of the film was about making good on payoffs for the most critical untapped setups - the Revers and River. Firefly is for the characters, Serenity is for answering lingering questions. One season wasn't enough, one movie wasn't enough. It's all so bittersweet.

I'm not certain, but I think I may have heard that Ron couldn't commit to additional films due to poor health.

Great reaction Guys! Now I go back to your Star Trek S2 reactions. The Serenity comics (graphic novels if you prefer) were made first and take place AFTER THE MOVIE (except for 'The Shepherd's Tale' which is a must-read, imo). There are a lot of them; I have 14 hardcovers so far. The Firefly novels are supposed to take place between The series and the movie. Novel #8 is supposed to drop at end of July 2023. Joss is involved with all of this production in some way. And it's all considered canon. Of course there is plenty of other material available too... One fairly inexpensive offering that I highly recommend is the book: The Gorram Shiniest DICTIONARY and PHRASEBOOK in the 'Verse.

I've no idea why Ron couldn't commit but as most of us know, Alan was IN GREAT DEMAND then, just as he is now. He's always been a voice actor as well as a live actor so he was probably busy enough to make our heads spin (and maybe his head too lol).

MertzRocks

SPOILER: With the comics, they are able to bring Early back without having to worry about the actor at all...

MertzRocks

Book, possibly. Early, def not. He was too unhinged. Ofc, there is no indication of Book being an operative in "A Shepherd's Tale" (I won't spoil further), which is canon, as are all the comics and novels.

MertzRocks

Lin, it seems to me I read a similar comment on another reactor's channel... Was that you? Does "Stay Golden" ring a bell? Or am I way off...?

MertzRocks

It was explained to me that River was a prototype reever killer. Herr telepthy allowed her to read the minds of the people who knew about the orriins of the reevers.

Ricky Johnson

Great reactions to the whole series. It was fun.

Prof Moff

I agree especially about Book being a former operative. There are all kinds of back stories but Shepard Book turning away from being an op is to me the best one. It fits in with when River read his mind in "Objects in Space"

Good points and information. Whedon is known for killing off at least 1 major character per project, ala Colson in Avengers and Quicksilver in Age of Ultron.

Collin Freeman

Good point. Syndication is what really helped to take Star Trek to the masses and make it as popular as it became. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Firefly had managed to complete 3 whole seasons. Different times, different technology, different viewing streams. Both great shows.

Collin Freeman

Months before the movie opened in theaters, Universal showed the cold open at various conventions and made it available online. Or maybe they showed the whole movie at conventions (I don't remember clearly) in order to generate some buzz among fans of the show. They chose to rely primarily on viral marketing so they wouldn't have to spend much money on conventional marketing. This strategy, plus their decision to release it in theaters in September (not a typical month for big budget sci-fi film releases back then), is probably what led to it not being profitable enough for sequels.

David Felgate

It's my understanding that the main cast were required to commit to 3 movies in their contracts (in case the first movie was profitable). Alan Tudyk (Wash) and Ron Glass (Book) were unable to commit to more than 1 movie, so their characters were killed off. Those of us who watched older shows produced by Joss Whedon know full well that he is not afraid to kill off popular characters. In this case, the deaths of Book and especially Wash raised the stakes considerably, so that when the reavers attacked at the end, the viewers felt genuine fear for the remaining characters since there was no assurance that all of them would survive.

David Felgate

My dad also saw this without seeing Firefly. You can follow it. Great reaction!

Chuck Rice

Somewhere I heard that Richard Brooks, the actor who played the bounty hunter Jubal Early, did not get along with Joss Whedon at all. If that's true, then bringing him back would have been a non-starter.

James H

True! Although interesting to note while Firefly had the internet, Star Trek had syndication!

Josh (Target Audience)

Wow, that’s interesting! We all have different journeys with this show!

A sci-fi show that was popular with a small group of people, was cancelled, but then gets made into a big budget movie. Josh, you also described what happened to Star Trek. Star Trek with its 3 seasons and 10 years to build its fan base (and without the internet) succeeded more than Firefly in continuing beyond its initial run; Firefly might have continued as films if they had more episodes and Fox had handled and promoted it properly. But hey, they are both very good series in their own right and I'm glad we have what we have. What's that old showbiz saying? "Keep them wanting more."

Collin Freeman

Fanty and Mingo (the guys they do business with just before River goes crazy) definitely should have just been Badger. I don't think Saffron really fits anywhere into the movie though.

Jeff Cornell

I feel like both the bounty hunter Early and Shepard Book had been operatives at one point in their lives (at least Book). --- "Key members of Parliament" were in a room with a psychic. I'm sure there were more secrets River had picked up, but this was the one that screwed with her head the most. She probably also knew about Hunter's laptop.

Edweirdo

Fun fact: I saw this movie in the theater without having watched Firefly first. I still enjoyed it, but of course there's wasn't the emotional resonance with the characters. I didn't see Firefly until it was streaming online, which I think is good since I, like you, saw the episodes in the intended order. I'm very glad you love the show/movie as much as I do. I've enjoyed watching it again "with" you.

Lin Phillips

FYI - Universal copyright claimed the video because their theme was playing during the sync moment (lol). So, we are muting that sync moment, but there is a second one shortly after. In the meantime, there may be ads on the video until that claim comes off, sorry for any bother that causes.
