UNCUT REACTION - Firefly Episode 14: Objects in Space

ONE SPOILER ALERT!! DO NOT READ IF YOU PLAN TO READ THE SERENITY COMICS: Early had a homer for his ship. He lives.

Remember that River is just like Wile E. Coyote, a SUPER GENIUS. In AD&D terms (for Josh) she'd probably have 19 or 20 intelligence and 18 or 19 wisdom (I won't say what I think the other scores would be 'til my movie comment lol). So YES, she knew how to work those comms perfectly, talking to each individual room from Early's ship as needed. The two main quotes about River in episode 1 from Simon were: "I am very smart... ...'Gifted' is the term. So when I tell you that my sister makes me look like an idiot child, I want you to understand my full meaning..." and, "There is nothing that didn't come as easily to (River) as breathing does to us..." Also, this is a Joss Whedon show. It certainly isn't obvious from the beginning, but River is his Superhero(ine) for this show. Now to the movie where you get to see... (no spoilers! Oh wait, you already watched it lol)

MertzRocks

How many of you recognized him in SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING ??

MertzRocks

lol

You guys are on top of it, as usual: Jubal Early was Joss Whedon's ode to Boba Fett. Nice job, as usual, guys. Looking forward to watching Serenity with you. If you liked this episode, you're going to love Serenity.

Collin Freeman

In the beginning of this episode, as River is walking around the ship catching the subconscious thoughts of those around her, the thought we get from Simon is, "I would be there right now". Later in the episode, Simon says out loud, in reference to the hospital, "I would be there right now, if she hadn't - if they had just left her alone." This verifies that the snippets we got in the beginning were not just figments of River's imagination, but said something significant about each of the characters we got quotes from. Some are easy to identify, such as, "I got stupid. The money was too good," from Jayne, which is an obvious reference to his betrayal in "Ariel". Others are less obvious, but would undoubtedly have become clear in later in the season. Whedon did this kind of thing before in "Buffy" and "Angel", where cryptic scenes or lines of dialog would pay off later.

I mentioned in a comment for a prior episode that everyone on the ship had a secret. Inara's secret was that she was dying from a terminal illness. It's never explicitly stated in the show or in the movie (and is therefor non-canon), but if you re-watch the show with this in mind, you will see hints of it. For example, in "Out of Gas", Inara says to Simon, "I love this ship. I have from the first moment I saw it," to which he replies, "I just don't want to die on it." Inara then says, almost to herself, "I don't want to die at all." She wasn't just referring to their present circumstance. Inara's secret condition informed many of the interactions between Mal and herself. In "Heart of Gold", just as things were about to get serious between the two of them at the end, she told Mal she was leaving. I think it's because she knew the two of them had no future together and she felt it would be unfair to Mal to let the relationship develop any further. We can only guess how this story line might have progressed or been resolved had the show not been canceled prematurely. To avoid spoilers, I waited until I knew you had watched every episode and the movie before bringing this up.

A compulsively philosophical psycho bounty hunter. “That seem right to you?”

I’m with you. Their reactions should be…interesting.

Young Blood Priest

You asked about a show ending great. Black Sails. It is fantastic. 4 seasons 38 eps and it the writing was done with 4 seasons in mind so the progression of the story is never rushed, there are a million little things that happen early on that later when the tons of twists and turns happen you say: "OH now I get it, how did I not see that coming." The only thing is lots of sex and nudity and language so I am not sure it is a good pick for the your channel. It is a great watch though way more in depth then you owuld think of a movie about pirates.

I love Jubal Early. He is so incredibly odd but it works for me. Many times writers try to create a character like him and it falls flat. The actor gave it just enough wierd and just enough crazy with plenty of scary cold blooded killer.

Cannot wait to see you guys react to STAR TREK's third season premiere. I'm definitely making popcorn for that.

MntrTodd

Sweet! Can't wait for the upload in January.

We actually already watched the movie last night, and no we did not watch the trailer, we went in completely cold

Josh (Target Audience)

Just a heads up, y'all, but I recommend you don't watch the Serenity trailer, as they seem to give a lot away. Better to go into it cold. If that's what you want, of course. 😺
