I joined Patreon in October 23. Going back and catching up on some content glad you didn’t vie up on BSG 78 I remember this episode as one the best and stand out. There are some more but this was my first one I wanted to see a few times, and no VCR at that time in my life.

I haven't watched more that the first couple of episodes in many years and I'm enjoying this re-watch more than I thought I would. I'm very happy you're continuing with this season. Thank you!

Glad you’re doing this show Haven’t seen this in many years in high school. I enjoyed this series. Good to see u enjoying it

Battlestar Galactica (2004) has similar what we used to call blip-verts in their title sequences. I always thought that they were perfectly designed because I could close my eyes during first viewings and then watch them after that,

About 3 years after I saw this episode, I took a science class. I was still quite young. The science book said that the scientific name for a wolf was Canis lupus as compared to Canis familiaris for a dog. I remember that I got very excited as I remember that they called a wolf a lupis on Battlestar Galactica. I remember discussing this with a few other boys in my science class to see if they remembered the same thing.

You both mentioned that you enjoyed T2. I wasn't a Patron back when Pilot Season was going on, but if I was, I would have suggested 2007s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It takes place 2 two years after T2 and most fans consider it the only true sequel to the movie. Since you recently finished Firefly, I'm sure it would also interest you that it was Summer Glau's next starring role. I really hope that you give this one a shot!

Brina Blue

that is right. I forgot space 1999 did that too

Prof Moff

The flash-cut scene intro in the first season of SPACE: 1999 was totally inspired by Martin Landau's and Barbara Bain's previous series MISSION IMPOSSIBLE which did the exact same thing to open each episode.

MntrTodd

The 1st season of Space: 1999 during the music intro would flash images with the words THIS EPISODE I guess to get the audience hyped but unlike Battlestar had no verbal lines and scenes. As TV was heavily into reruns of episodes and syndication and knowing if people missed it and before people had Beta and VHS in the 80s they might change the channel or turn the TV off and would want to hook them in to watch it. And besides spoilers if you recognized the episode as a repeat then you could decide to watch it again or watch something else which ultimately is self-defeating where the intent to get them to watch it fully backfires.

Brad Barter

For the original it would have been nice to see a cold-open teaser a la Star Trek, but in the absence of that, they probably wanted something to entice the viewer to wait through a minute of opening titles, one or two minutes of commercials, and another minute of episode credits. And the spoilers usually weren’t much more than what was given away in the weekly TV Guide ads. (But that said, I’d have preferred them without the previews too.)

side bar. for some stupid reason the reboot does it too. WHY

Prof Moff

Yes the STUPID spoilers in the intro. WHY WHY WHY were TV studios so STUPID back then. studio exec 1: "Hey we need to convince people to watch our show." studio exec 2: " Ok lets convince peple to watch our show by putting teasers in the beginning of the episode that the viewer has already tuned into to start watching. THAT will make them turn to the channel when the show comes on." Exec 1: " Brilliant". If we did not put the teaser (spoiler) in the intro then the view watching it would have never tuned in to the channel in the first place to watch the show, that the teaser in the intro for...... umm.... Brilliant!

Prof Moff

Glad you enjoyed this episode! Yes, the basic story is like "Shane" with the sci-fi elements added, but they did a great job with it. Although I can't prove anything, I suspect Joss Whedon drew a little inspiration for Firefly from here.

James H

This is otherwise known at the Shane episode. If you have not read the book or seen the western movie, I recommend it. Jane Seymour was in fact a big TV actress at the time. She did a lot of TV movies and mini-series. She was also the main Bond girl in Live and Let Die in 1973. Sci-fi was indeed poo-poo'd by many in Hollywood at that time, despite the success of Star Wars.
