PATREON EXCLUSIVE Star Trek vs Firefly - Whatever This Is 004 Extra Segment

Comments

Its worth getting back to for sure.

I lost(hehe) track of Lost when it first aired, and after missing a few episodes I was completely lost(I'm not doing this on purpose). Haven't watched it since

Timothy Nikiforovs

I would have to disagree slightly. I can can think of a few episodes that are far worse than Spock's Brain. The Alternative Factor from season one comes to mind. That one makes Spock's Brain look like Shakespeare. I would agree that it shouldn't have been chosen by the network to lead off the new season, but it's far from the worst episode, imho.

Dan Krantz

I'm going to have to disagree. Spock's Brain is CAMP. Nothing compares to the pain of "And The Children Shall Lead" That is the worst episode of Season 3. At least for me. That, or the space hippies.

Steven Johnson

I agree. Classic television can be digested like a snack. You can't really bust out a single episode of most modern TV shows because they play like a chapter out of a book.

Steven Johnson

Just to give you guys a heads up . . . you're about to view the third season premiere, "Spock's Brain". I will give you this one spoiler alert - this is far and away the worst episode of the original STAR TREK. Nothing else even comes close. You're going to ask yourselves how this script ever got greenlighted. You're going to wonder if the same series that put out episodes like "Balance of Terror" and "City on the Edge of Forever" could have put this on the air. (The answer of course, is that it is NOT the same series, but more on that later.) This is the only original series episode in which I find no redeeming qualities whatsoever, with the exception of the usual excellent musical score. There is good news however. Although season three will not be up to the quality of the first two seasons, never again will it plumb the depths of "Spock's Brain." And there are still some of STAR TREK's best and most brilliant episodes still to come. Stick with season three and keep watching, as always, with an open mind.

If ST had been serialized like modern shows, you probably would not be watching it now. Episodic allows the audience to watch it in repeats til the end of time, whereas has anyone discovered LOST or rewatched it in the last ten years? ST is like comfort food you will love your entire life, but when was the last time you turned on Game Of Thrones? I've never seen Firefly but it was just something that was not on my radar at the time.

Ken R

The majority of us are here to steer you two towards the greatest or at least the most iconic sci fi movies or tv shows. Of the three, Star Trek is basically The Beatles, the most groundbreaking, famous, worshipped and referenced sci fi tv show in history. Their influence was massive. Firefly and BSG (reboot) are like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Both following in the shadow of greatness but both becoming massively successful by producing high quality and timeless music. This goes for BSG 2.0 and Firefly both are in the top 5 greatest sci fi shows of all time.

BURKE Wells

Because I grew up with TOS they are like your childhood friends - think Stand By Me. Firefly are like your friends from college or old drinking buddies. They are all your friends but each holds a different place in your heart. There is one difference that does stand out to me between the two shows. Star Trek is true science fiction - in other words you have higher concepts that are addressed about the future of humanity and it regularly questions how we should proceed as a civilization. Firefly is a western in space - to be honest only the movie(Serenity) is a true science fiction story. So looking beyond the pleasure of interacting with your friends(the characters) there is that additional higher purpose in Star Trek that you don't get with Firefly. Firefly, Battle Star Galactica, and Star Wars are just escapism - Star Trek(especially TOS) asks us to stop and think about the future we are creating.

Ricky Johnson

I'm a bit disappointed there was nothing after "End Game", but there is always the chance that if they were to make movies or TV series after "End Game", they would be really, really bad.

Edweirdo

Well, Star Trek, Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica all have Canadian actors portraying ship captains, so there is interesting nerd comparison fact. But seriously, I agree with your metaphor of the steak and rotisserie chicken. I love them both. I have started to wonder if Firefly had gone on, would it have been as good. Probably not. One reason Star Trek is so hit and miss is in episodic television, it's tough to crank out good stuff week after week. Time crunches can sometimes help creativity, but often they cause more things to come off half-baked.

Collin Freeman

I agree.

Collin Freeman

As far as your comments on character development/moments, the supporting Trek cast get a few more chances to be seen in the 3rd season than in previous ones. Keep an open mind on what you are about to see in season 3. It isn't as bad as many would say. There are some great episodes, some good ones and a few eye rollers. But for the most part, even the stinkers are entertaining in a campy fun kind of way.
