One bit of dialogue between Mal and Nandy that you may have missed. Nandy - "She's like you more than a little." Mal - "And how exactly is that?" Nandy - "She hates complications." This is a call back to a brief conversation between Kaylie and Inara in 'Ariel Ep. 9' Kaylie asks Inara about the Companion policy on dating to which Inara ruefully replies "It's... Complicated..." Also something that helped me understand Inara better in this episode is expanded universe lore from beyond the show. Inara wasn't JUST getting a yearly check up, she was there for a reason tied to a terminal illness. Which is also one of the reasons why she left Sihnon and her ambitions of being a house priestess and why she won't get involved with Malcolm.
