Yeah, I always found this a rather boring episode. If it had resulted in a spinoff, I may have watched it, once, just because it was Trek related, but I'm glad it never happened. It just felt like a Dr Who ripoff in concept. This episode was somewhat prophetic though. Spock referred to an important political assassination and a government coup in Asia. 6 days after this episode aired, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. On the same day, a Saturn V rocket, Apollo 6 was launched and also suffered a malfunction and went off course. There were no nukes on board and the circumstances were different, but it's shockingly similar to the events the episode predicted. Furthermore, a few months later, a coup would take place in Iraq. Saddam Hussein was a key player in that coup and would a decade later become president. Granted the rocket launch was no doubt planned before the episode production began(though the malfunction wouldn't be predictable), and a coup and assassination are vague enough to be coincidental, but man that's a lot of coincidences.

The whole notion of a season finale did not exist yet, and I don't think the idea of a season cliffhanger wouldn't come along til SOAP, although it would be DALLAS that leads all the other shows to start doing them. What I don't get is who came up with the dumb idea for a mid-season finale?
