UNCUT REACTION Firefly Episode 12: The Message

Comments

This reaction was the most surprising to me. I LOVE this episode. It gets me cryin every time.

That first 'planet' was actually a space station; the ep opened on an exterior shot lasting a whopping six seconds! Womack and his boys were Alliance Enforcement (a kind of police) but running side jobs, including this organ smuggling with Tracy. All the other reactors I have seen watch this show have been women, and they constantly hoped for two things: 1 - Mal and Inara hooking up and professing their love for each other (even though they can't even admit it to themselves). 2 - Simon and Kaylee hooking up. Kaylee has been enamored since episode 1, maybe it took Simon a bit longer but he's got it bad for Kaylee too. He just can't NOT put his foot in mouth... Or maybe it's a rectal-cranial inversion lol. 3! - I could add that one reactor also wants River and Jayne to hook up. This is something I have posited and she was the only one who noticed it too. River teases Jayne a LOT in this show. She took bread from his plate at the end of 'Safe'. She read Jayne's mind upon waking up in 'Ariel' and later teased him with vague memories of one of Jayne's childhood Christmas mornings, obviously f***ing with him. In 'Trash' she starts with the "...girl's name" thing, screwing with him again. Even though it never happens in the show, the movie, or the novels and comics as far as I've read, it actually would make sense for them to get together. River obviously likes him and would keep his baser instincts better in check if they were together and Jayne... Well, he's not picky. River is "...cute too. She's not all there, but not all of her has to be..." lol (from ep1 'Serenity'). Damn my comments are always short stories. Sorry guys! Totally enjoying all your reactions!

Valid points

That puts a whole new perspective on it for sure

I completely see where you guys are coming from with Simon and Kaylee, but (shockingly) disagree. The story has been from Ep1 Kayee really wanting Simon, over the eps it is Simon that has been drawn to Kaylee and falling for her. Problem is he is an idiot when it comes to girls. She thinks way to highly of him as if he should know she likes him ealry on (he has no idea) at this point she now does not know he really likes her, but as is stated, he is not good at talking to girls. At the end of this ep between them is nothing more then freindship. Simon for ONCE doing something sweet by supporting Kaylee in her loss by giving her a hand, just a hand to hold to comfort her. That is my take (and was my 1st or 2nd watch).

The funeral scene was filmed immediately after the cast and crew were informed that the show had been cancelled. No doubt this impacted the performances of the cast, as they were at that moment mourning the death of Firefly.

Kaylee truly cares about Simon. I think she was flirting with Tracey partly because she was mad at Simon. I imagine she held Simon's hand at the end because she had cooled off somewhat, and also because death and funerals are things that tend to make a person reflect upon the things and the people that matter to you in life.

I also highly recommend Angel, but its a direct spinoff from Buffy, and half of the main characters were introduced in Buffy. Both shows are fantastic, and I think you should react to both, starting with Buffy.

David Felgate

I think the idea with Kaylee going back to Simon was that she realized his genuine care is more important than his awkwardness. Simon clearly cares about her, but keeps putting his foot in his mouth. While Tracey, although he's charismatic and talks a good game, turns out to be an asshole and takes her hostage. With that experience as contrast, she can more easily accept that Simon puts his foot in his mouth.

If you decide to do more TV series from the Whedon-verse, I highly recommend Angel. I caught it in first reruns and was hooked. Can't say much about Buffy. I imagine it's at least a decent series, but I don't think I watched more than 2 episodes.

Collin Freeman

I agree that this episode is comparatively weaker, and I also don't buy the relationship between Simon and Kaylee. The ending was a bit too pat. It's okay, though, still a good episode, and I loved your reaction at the resurrection!
