Those crazy eyes were even more on display in Dagger of the Mind. He was good at portraying characters that were a little "off". He did a bit of guest starring in 60s westerns.

It could have been more fun had there been a bigger reaction to finding such worlds. Maybe worth a follow-up story at some point. Parallel development is an idea, discovering intelligent life is a common occurrence — but to find an Identical Planet Earth in our own universe like in Miri? How does it happen? Somebody would be studying that long after the Enterprise had flown on.

Captain Ron Tracey with the Crazy Eyes — this guy trying to kill Captain Kirk with an axe was scarier than even the Gorn to me as a little kid. He was the best part of this episode.

Parallel universes is one thing, parallel development of Earth-like worlds in the same galaxy (to the extreme of even identical continents in "Miri"), is a little silly. Ymmv. :)

lol. Parallel earths aka multiverse is one of the driving stories in science fiction from the 60s to modern day.

There was a dubious theory about "parallel Earths" in the 60s (maybe it was just pseudo-science, who knows?) that Star Trek dipped into at least 3 or 4 times. It's convenient for set building and costumes, but it's pretty silly, and I'm glad later Star Trek abandoned the concept altogether.

Yes, I've often wondered what might have happened had they used this as the second pilot. I doubt the show would have launched.

This was one of three scripts considered for the second pilot after The Cage was rejected. The others were the accepted Where No Man Has Gone Before and Mudd's Women. I think they chose the right one. This is not one of my favorites, either. It may have been OK without the hit-everyone-over-the-head-with-a-message last 15 minutes. Shatner, btw, is Canadian.

Looking pretty glum in the thumbnail there. 😉
