Patreon Exclusive REACTION - Battlestar Galactica (1978) Episode 4 - Lost Planet of the Gods Part 1

Here is our full uncut reaction to Planet of the Lost Gods Part 1

We are enjoying Battlestar Galactica but we also want to make sure we are giving you all what you want to see with your membership. We will be watching the part 2 (episode 5) of this 2-part arc next week, but we want to hear from you how we should proceed.

Should we continue with every episode, watch specific episodes/arcs, or move on to something else? We go into more detail in our discussion after the episode in the video.

After hopefully hearing from you all, we may run a poll if necessary. Not looking for other suggestions on this post, just your thoughts on how to move forward with BSG.

Thank you for being a Patron & enjoy!

Captions move around so they don't block important things on the screen. But also move to left or the right if there is more than one person on the screen. They are positioned to be under the person that is speaking.

Stevtrek

I have a very soft spot for the last episode

I'm someone that finally came around and decided to give your Patreon a try during the free trial because I really wanted to see your take on BSG. I haven't watched these episodes since they aired on prime time so I really wanted to share my rewatch with someone! I hope that you decide to do all. What you missed in this episode was a huge dose of 70s sexism. Being a Viper pilot a man's job and these women had only crashed though the glass ceiling because of the illness. It still might have taken years if ever for women to have made the move from shuttles to Vipers in this universe, even with reduced numbers.

Brina Blue

All I can say is that Galactica 1980 has to be seen to be believed.

Ron

Thanks Burke!

Josh (Target Audience)

As a Star Trek Patreon first but was along for Firefly and BSG. My only request for BSG is to poll the good ones and watch ONE AND ONLY episode of Galactica 80 just to see how weird the show came back as and you can goof on it all you want without anyone getting pissed at you two. Honestly, I enjoy it when Alex does head rolls and facepalms (see Scream and Obi-Wan finale).

BURKE Wells

And he will return in Galactica, at least a few more times!

If you're curious about what the original Star Trek effects, try searching youtube for "Star Trek special effects comparison" you can see the original effects next to the special edition

George Murdoch played the doctor. He appeared twice in Star Trek later, and as one of the government conspirators on The X-Files. He was always a favorite of mine

tyranusfan

Well, I really joined your patreon for the Star Trek watch alongs and I'm loving those!! These have been fun but I think you should do whatever you want. I don't want you to feel obligated to continue with something if your not really enjoying it. I watched the rest of this season of BSG when I was kid so I can"t honestly speak to the quality. I'll keep watching them if you continue (I'm going to wait with this one until you post part 2 so I can watch them together). The remake of BSG is great though.

Gary Leyh

It's worth seeing this through. There are a few duds after "War of the Gods Part II," but not too many. After all it's only one season. You should definitely watch the 2004 miniseries later on, it's nice to compare the two. (Whether you watch the complete series that followed is up to you!)

tyranusfan

Yeah, it went off the air as the #20 program in the Nielson ratings.

Mark Chrisco

Yes, I thought I read somewhere BG 1978-1979 cost $1 million per episode. Thanks for confirming, James.

Collin Freeman

Thanks Colin!

Appreciate it Brad!

Yeah with as much as I like the original BSG series unlike Star Trek having thought provoking science fiction elements and episodes the main focus (as is the reboot) is to flee and fight the Cylons. I know Alex with watching Star Trek is getting tired of God like beings and if we continue classic BSG there will definitely be some of that. However, other than the odd episodes that stand out as great there are more comedy/child focused episodes than I'd like since I have mentioned this show was primarily focused on kids my age at the time which closely matched Boxey (Noah Hathaway) which makes sense as a family show in the late 70s. Incidentally the boy who plays Boxey will later be a co-star in one of the greatest children's movies of the 80s The Neverending Story as Atreyu in 1984. I think a poll of which BSG episodes to watch would be best to avoid the trashy episodes and since the episodes that are trash tend to be even more child focused we could avoid them and only watch ones that are significant to continuity and best of, that way we could skip Galactica 1980 as well and jump right into the revamped mini-series which is a thousand times better.

Brad Barter

It's supposedly the first series to cost a million dollars per episode, which was huge at the time... more than 5 times the budget of Star Trek just 10 years earlier.

James H

I am watching the series on Tubi streaming channel, with commericials. The main reason the series was cancelled was because the budget did not drop off, i.e., it was so expensive to produce. My votes are: 1) Continue with this series, 2) Avoid Galatica 1980, 3) At some point down the line, watch the 2004 BG series.

Collin Freeman

I think skipping 1980 makes sense but would love you to watch the remake which is far superior

AzoriusMage

No, you guys pronounced it correctly - Lorne Greene as Adama. Lorne Green is a television legend - he and Strarbuck hold the show together. Greene was the star of the long running show Bonanza. As poorly as this show has aged(or I have aged) realize this was the biggest TV scifi show post Star Trek. It was made on the hype of Star Wars - and kids loved it. I never missed an episode. It is telling that this is the first time I have watched it since I was kid - unlike Star trek that I have pretty much memorized. Oh yea , they were very good at the practical effects - that may have been the main draw. I may have to go back a review it to tell you which episodes to watch. I know there are some really good ones(at least the 12 year old version of me remembers it that way ).

Appreciate it!

Good to know this is what caused you to sign up, thanks!

Good to know, thanks!

I’d like you to see out this season as planned. I don’t think it would be worth reacting to the Galactica 1980 series. That was not so good at all.

Silk

I really wish you’d watch all of them, no matter how long it takes, because this was the reason I signed up on Patreon. There are some episodes that COULD be skipped without missing any story arcs or important character introductions, but they all have some good moments in them, and you’d be missing out on some cool stuff like the murder mystery episode and the space-Western episodes that were a sort of precursor to Firefly. Please stick with it… there are high spots and low spots, but it’s good solid Seventies TV.

James H

I'd like to see you finish out the series. The movie (first 3 episodes) is not really indicative of the show as a whole. The episode quality improves and there's some episodes coming up like The Living Legend, War of the Gods, and The Hand of God that are excellent.

Bret Kay

Thanks for the feedback Elliott!

Josh (Target Audience)

I grew up with the show (it came out when I was 8), but it definitely has moments of goof and inconsistency. But there are a few things coming up that are really cool from a story standpoint and demonstrate what a cool concept the whole thing was. Sadly, it did not get renewed for a 2nd season other than the spinoff "Galactica 1980" which maybe, if you make it through this whole season, you should watch just for the comic value (it is really bad...). Anyway, I hope you keep watching. I came to your channel for the Star Trek and love watching these reactions -- and you guys are in for a long journey and some great episodes, story arcs, and characters not only of TOS, but the movies and then TNG and beyond. It's gonna keep you busy literally for a few years at least! Finally, Alex, really? Ohio State? [Go blue!]

Elliott Miles McKinley

Yes

Jonathan

You're speaking of the 2003 2-part miniseries that served as the pilot for the 2004 reboot, correct?

Josh (Target Audience)

As far as I’m concerned after next week I would love you to move on and watch the remake mini series. You have seen enough of the original to compare the two and get some of the Easter Eggs, since it’s a remake there is no continuity issues like there would be with Star Trek.

Jonathan
