UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E18 The Immunity Syndrome

Comments

Trek has a lot of these episodes that are fairly basic ideas writ large, like in this case "what if we're the galaxy's immune system". If nothing else, it allows for some unique stories to be told. It helps when they work in some good character drama as they did here. They put Kyle in a gold shirt this episode to match up with a stock footage shot on the bridge that showed the shoulder of a different character in the same seat wearing a gold shirt, so they had to make it match. Kirk keeps calling him "Cowell" though, which might seem like an attempt to say this was a different guy, but John Winston is credited as Kyle. Solid episode for the character stuff, very TOS in plot though.

I’m with you on 70s Who. Big fan.

I believe that the writers of Star Trek Next Generation (STNG) lent themselves to more exploration of the crew then STOS seeing the interest for more intimate content with the ships community from fans. In fact Star Trek Deep Space 9 also explored the occupants of the space station as much as it explored the politics of alien races. Even the prequel 'Star Trek: Enterprise (w-Scot Bakula)' followed the background lives of the crew. They served on a ship more crowded and less advanced (like a submarine is to a carrier ship) than STOS or STNG. And they all tried to abolish the 'curse of the red shirts' as much as possible. ;-)

I first saw the Flash Gordon serials when I was around 11 or 12. One of the local stations went 24/7 and they would put on things like Flash Gordon in the post mid-night spot on Saturday nights. I would stay up all night to watch it. As bad as it was it was SciFi and I loved it. Today, I can't even watch 5 minutes of it - oh, how times change. I can, however, still watch 70s Dr. Who....

Wow, all those people showed up in Sick Bay damn fast.

This was good but was never one of my favorites. Outside of Bones it is pretty joyless compared to some of the others. I never turn it off but it isn't one I seek out. In this season I have to go with Amok Time, Journey To Babel, Mirror Mirror, and Trouble With Tribbles. At this point in the show you can see they are trying to find ways to get Scotty on camera; they beefed up his role compared to the first year but his job doesn't really call for being on the bridge, so this is what they came up with. In a few episodes Scotty will get his finest hour. The rest of the season is pretty solid.

The previous mission mentioned at the beginning would have been “Obsession” based on production order

I recently saw a TikTok I believe that used the exact line that made you guys laugh when Spock says to brace themselves as the area of penetration will undoubtedly be sensitive but in the TikTok video had Kirk and Spock making sexy eyes towards each other. I don't know if you plan to watch the bloopers but there is one from this episode when DeForest Kelley (Bones) and Majel Barrett Roddenberry (Nurse Chapel) are hurled into the wall and each other he accidentally (well possibly accidental) grabbed her breasts as he wrapped his arms around her instead of her waist as it is in the episode.

Definitely one of the better ones. It's always interesting to see the kind of things you guys react to the most. Your comments often remind me of MST3000. I often do the same thing - despite my love for the series - I've watched all the episodes more times than I can count - I will often make fun of some aspects of the show, although it's done in a positive way, and I still love the episode. I know Alex and Josh have heard the following comment a lot - but it's true that their age has a lot to do with how they react to these episodes. Keeping in mind that for the most part they have reacted very positively to the series., I know that watching a 55 year old show is bound to get a whole range of reactions. I recall my dad telling me how much he enjoyed Flash Gordon serials. They must have looked great in the 1930s .. but 50 years later - not so much. However, in general, I think these ST episodes hold up very well.

As I remember, he was an amateur radio enthusiast and spent his retirement happily pursuing that pastime.

I consider this to be one of the above average episodes, mainly for the reason you mentioned: it's the characters and their interaction that make put this episode into a B or B+ grade instead of a C or lower. The whole "wish me luck" sequence between Spock and McCoy is a particularly nice touch and a favorite of mine.

Collin Freeman

I saw this when I was learning about cells in Science class. We were learning about Amoebas, and my Dad was like, 'See? They can eat EVERYTHING!" That freaked me out a little. :)

I always really liked this one. I enjoyed the sci fi idea of the galaxy getting infected by a space organism. I think I'm more of a classic sci fi fan, so I enjoy those kinds of stories more than the stuff from last week.

Andreas Schmitt

This seems to be the last episode directed by Joseph Pevney, so I guess we’re saying goodbye to him.

Well the next one is really a commentary on the Vietnam War - and they could have probably come up with a better story - but TOS was never afraid of covering controversial topics. Given how much the liked A Piece of the Action - they are bound to like Patterns of Force, and maybe even Bread and Circuses.

Ricky Johnson

This one I liked but did feel like it dragged on. It is greatly helped by remastered effects because before it was pretty bad effects wise. You may like this even more compared to the next few you have to get through.

Jonathan

The Spock-Bones dynamic alone makes it one of the better ones of the Season

Josh (Target Audience)

This is a top 10 for me - I love the ones with lots of tension. I did notice you guys were certainly focused during the episode. I always come out of this episode exhausted - there is just so much going on. Also, several good lines in this one - I know I've used that sarcastic line with the "Why, thank you, ......" when someone was exceeding their authority.
