Patreon Exclusive REACTION - Battlestar Galactica (1978) Episode 2 - Saga of a Star World Part 2

Comments

The one thing I couldn't stand about the reboot Galactica was the decision to drop the "Ancient Aliens" motif. I mean to me, THAT was what separated the series from Star Wars. The reboot pays a bit of lip service to it, but the Cylons were literal Cyborgs (human-looking for the most part), and it was just its own thing - a good show, don't get me wrong (some of the same writers and producers from TNG if memory serves), but for me its like Star Wars without Jedi, or Star Trek without a positive attitude. Larson dumped the whole budget into the pilot "movie" which - like TOS before it - meant that almost the whole show was done with stock footage from that first 3-part pilot. Overall, I'd say about 12 of the original 24 episodes were solid. Cut out the other 12, and you've got a bangin' miniseries that sadly ends on a cliffhanger. Never understood why they didn't release a truncated edition to cut out all the feldercarb, but maybe it would be confusing.

Ha, I often wondered who Boxy was meant to appeal to, because even little kids hated seeing little kids in their sci-fi.

Trevacious

Please PLEASE watch the reboot. It is a stunning series in every way.

John Schmitt

I think most people agree that the reboot is vastly superior in every way. The characters, and there are a lot of them, are wonderful. I was very skeptical of it when I first heard they were doing a reboot, but watching the mini series quickly won me over. This is definitely one that I hope the guys react to.

John Schmitt

One thing that always has and continues to bother me is the use of words you can hear a thousand times and still not be entirely certain of the actual meaning. Pluton, Centons, microns, mili-centons etc. I understand their use to show they are humans but not from Earth but it gets annoying after a while.

Brad Barter

I like when sci-fi tries to add a swear word that mimics our own. Farscape did the same with their own f-word Frell.

Brad Barter

I have never made it to the end of this episodes every time I’ve tried to watch the original and it was a struggle today. I’m glad this is only 22 episodes, but it was fun seeing things that I recognize as Easter eggs in the reboot. This is making me appreciate the reboot more and more.

Jonathan

Daggits are the show's lingo for dogs. They would occasionally throw in words to make it sound somewhat non-Earth-like, like micron for minute, frack for f*@k, etc.

Collin Freeman

I was also 12 - this was the first big spectacular scifi TV shows after the release of Star Wars. The hype was overwhelming - I remember planning for the release date for weeks. I do remember the premiere being really long.

Ricky Johnson

Randy, you're not alone. I'm sure it's not the actor's fault, but a result of writers not knowing how to write childrens' dialogue, and also the decision to pander to the "family friendly" element. I just can't.

Lin Phillips

Just watched. Thanks for mentioning the guy with the fully bandaged head. That’s when I finally got synced. 😂

Silk

I thought Noah Hathaway managed to be less irritating than many other child actors. Still, it’s a fact (to which network executives are usually blind) that kids watching an adventure series don’t want to see kids in it.

James H

The premiere was a 3-hour movie. It was broken up into 3 parts later for syndication, but that’s not the ideal way to experience it.

James H

Thanks for the reaction. You're right, this was a boring episode. I was twelve when it came out and I seem to remember that this aired with the first episode on Sunday night (I could be wrong though). If so, it would have been a good hook to come back next week.

Gary Leyh

Okay I'll be the jack hole Boxy scenes want to make me kill myself and they always have even when I was his age watching this show the first time

Prof Moff

Lorne Greene was a well known actor at the time this aired. That's probably why he introduces the show as himself. He starred in Bonanza (a famous 60s and 70s) western for 14 seasons.

Bret Kay

I am not sure you guys will make it through the whole series, you might. But I will say if you do choose to do the reboot, I think most who saw the original and then the reboot will agree, the reboot is actually better having seen the original first. It is not a continuation or anything but little things they put into the reboot that came from the original. The two are SO different in feel and story telling but there is nice connections.

Prof Moff

"Nope" changes the way I look at Muffit. :D

tyranusfan

This 1978 version of Battlestar is definately a reflection of the 70s with everyone including the guys having longish hair, the flowing robes and outfits for the girls and the 70s disco themed music (which I loved and still do) but unlike other sci-fi shows that try to look futuristic in all things Battlestar Galactica as well as 1979 Buck Rogers in the 25th Century put modern people, styles and music of that time and inserted them into futuristic settings.

Brad Barter

When they approached Edward James Olmos to play the role of Commander Adama in the reboot mini-series he straight up told them that the first alien with 4 eyes and 2 mouths etc he would gasp react and fall down dead on camera, leave and never come back which is hilarious. He wanted a more human spin to the spin-off. Not trying to spoil anything later on but as it is still a while off thought I'd mention it now while the "girls" are still fresh in everyone's minds.

Brad Barter

In the 80s he did the long running series about animals in the wild called Lorne Greene's New Wilderness.

Brad Barter

He did have a #1 record in the Sixties with a cowboy song called “Ringo.”

James H

I had a feeling the casino and resort would be a Watership Down type of situation. 😬 And yeah, a chimp in the dagget suit makes me sad. You can tell that this was filmed during disco, hedonism, and Studio 54.

Lin Phillips

You might be thinking of one of Lorne Greene's more famous roles (other than this), as the father on the TV show "Bonanza," which ran for a number of years.

tyranusfan

100% a chimp. Her name was Evie.

James H

Thanks for your efforts to help sync. I’m sure it will help 👍🏼
