UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E14 Wolf in the Fold

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard Scotty would have had a kilt-less encounter but she died so we will NOT assume anything happened after her death even though "I canna rememba" Kirk 5 Chekov 2 Bones 1 Spock 1 Extra: The big take away from this episode (seeing into the future TNG) is the Enterprise engineers have NO GAME with the girls.

It's funny that this is almost another Halloween episode, but it aired just before Christmas. It's not one of my favourites, but it's decent. That last act where the whole crew is high from the sedative is a pretty fun time. I used to get confused about whether Scotty has been possessed and made to murder those first 2 women, but they established that Redjac can block out memory of an event of anyone but the victim and that the knife disappeared right as Hengist left to get the 2 witnesses. Scotty would have seen and identified Hengist in the first 2 cases, so his memory was blocked and he was framed. When Sybo was killed the room was pitch black and nobody saw what happened, so the memory block was unnecessary. Like many classic "whodunits", there is actually a subtle clue implicating Hengist early on. After Lt. Tracy is murdered, Kirk mentioned one of his crew had been murdered. While you were focused on the guy saing he hadn't murdered anyone(a fact already established), Hengist asked "how did the girl die?", when nobody had said who the victim was. Granted he did see her beam in, and could perhaps deduce she was the person missing, but no details about the murder had been given. Subtle clue, but it's there. The resolution to this episode raises an interesting possibility, and that's the transporter being used as a weapon. If they can set it to beam someone/something out in a way that doesn't put them back together as they were but scatters their molecules across space, you have to wonder why Kirk didn't try convincing Nomad to get on the transporter to be beamed out, and then just disperse it's atoms into space? Possibly could have worked with the cloud from Obsession as well, but that's trickier. Also interesting factoid, the court scene lasts about 15 minutes and is the longest unbroken scene in all of TOS. Fun enough episode. I like a good mystery

Also episode 15 is a top shelf classic that any true "Trekkie" knows. It may be one of the three most famous episodes ever. If you walked up to a fan and said name me 3 episodes of TOS this would be one in most cases.

In my opinion the second half of season two is much stronger than the first half. 5 of my all time favorite episodes reside in the back half of this season.

It took fandom to give Sulu and Uhura first names!

Your comment made me think of Galaxy Quest - trying not to spoil it...

I wouldn't consider this a spoiler really, but like a lot of series at the time, it rarely goes deep into any other characters besides the main stars. There are Kirk, Spock, and McCoy centered episodes, but you pretty much won't see an episode learning about Sulu's history or Uhura's childhood, for example. They definitely get more prominent roles now and then, but you really don't see the whole ensemble explored like you often see in modern TV shows.

Loved the reaction! Always liked this episode, though I just never could take Hengist seriously as the villain. This is the guy who voiced Winnie the Pooh's Piglet! Can't wait for the next episode though! It's my absolute favourite of TOS! If you like the fun, goofy episodes, you'll like the next one! :)

The next episode is one of my top favorites not only of TOS but all of Star Trek. It also introduces one of the most dangerous aliens of all time.

Carl Peterson

I like this one a lot. Not to everyone's taste but I like it. If they would have cut down the dance at the beginning a little. Also made Scotty more of an actor trying to show he is innocent than just forgetful. That would have made the episode much better. I do also think a normal alien or human murderer would have been better also.

Carl Peterson

Never apologize for your honest opinion. I love the show and all its flaws, and I still enjoy your analysis. And yes, next one is iconic. I am sadly biased, because as a kid I instantly was distracted by all the fun.

This episode is one of the few times you can see the missing fingers on Scotty’s hand that was from a WW2 injury. I never realized he was missing them till I met him in person.

First: DON’T apologize for “Deadly Years”. It’s exactly what you said it was. Second: Next Episode “Trouble With Tribbles” is iconic in the Trek universe. It’s a purely a fun episode with no morality involved. It’s generally beloved in the Trek community.

BURKE Wells

Fun episode - sorry if I led you to believe it was super Scotty-centric. He does have a central role - but not all episode. Next one though - OH WOW - get ready for a good one. Almost all the regular cast get good scenes. If someone had never watched TOS and they could only see one - I would choose the next one. It doesn't beat City on the Edge of forever but its a top 5 for me. To use Bill Clinton's favorite term - I may be mis-remembering but I think they tried to get Harry Mudd in this one but the actor wasn't available so they created a new character. If Harry Mudd had been in it I'm sure it would be Alex's favorite.

Ricky Johnson

I always had the impression that Hingist was already dead, and the alien animated his body.

First, you were correct about "The Deadly Years," it's a slow and boring episode. I couldn't even bring myself to watch your reactions! Second, I'm so glad you liked this one, it's one of my favorites. When I was a kid, it got me really interested in Jack the Ripper. I loved his voice in the computer, so creepy. Thanks for another great reaction!

whodunits are my favorites and there have been so many good ones from the golden age of Hollywood. I recommend, even as a stream, And Then There Were None 1945, and Witness For The Prosecution 1957 I think. Also, if you just love whodunnits you might want to consider YouTubing "whodunit UK" a murder mystery game show from 50 years ago. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsdjUjGanbyEFL9CRAZjqta8CdcRqjk7Y

Robert Bloch wrote “Psycho “. Lt Tracy the soon-to-be croaked redskirt uses a…wait for it…psycho tricorder. HA HA HA! I wonder if when you press the button on it it screeched out the psycho violins.🤪

Rich Cirivilleri

Definitely knew he sounded familiar!

Spock was minimized in this episode because Nimoy had just gotten an Emmy nomination for Star Trek, while Shatner got nothing. I guess they were propping up their star's ego. In the original script it was Sulu, not Scotty, who was the suspect in the murders. After they switched to Scotty, they gave Sulu the funny "I'm High" scene as recompense (the cast received the first drafts of the scripts, which would change a lot by the time of shooting.) Joseph Pevney messed up the shot of Redjac trying to kill Spock with the turbolift doors, but they couldn't go back and reshoot it. Montgomery is Jimmy Doohan's middle name.

John Fiedler, who played Hengist, was the voice of Piglet in Disney’s classic version of Winnie the Pooh. Also a semi-regular on The Bob Newhart Show.

Another meh episode for me. Robert Bloch wrote What Are Little Girls Made Of and Catspaw as well as this episode. He was more of a horror author than sci-fi. He had a particular interest in Jack-the-Ripper. I did like the reveal of Mr. Hingist being the murderer - least one you'd suspect? So, did Scotty really kill 1 or both of those first 2 women but while being possessed? Hmmm. Next up: another nice palate cleanser.
