TOS Sex Scoreboard About 200 years old and bangin younger women. Are we sure Zefram is not the long lost great grandfather of Kirk? Kirk 5 Chekov 2 Bones 1 Spock 1 Extra: Zefram gets a +1, besides his name is Cochrane…….. hehehaha He said cock-er-an

It's funny that you were both expressing fatigue with the "god entity" trope around this time right as the trend was, if not ending, becoming significantly more rare and less overt. At the same time though, Metamorphosis kicked off the "cloud entity" trope. Also we get more of Scotty showing his command chops. I do like this episode though. There's a great message about being open minded. You could rewrite the story as a blind man who is cared for by a woman for years, appreciates everything she does for him, then one day his vision is restored and his first reaction is "oh my God, she's black!! What the fuck?". Sure, he seemed just fine with vulcans, but the companion is significantly more alien. All the same, he clearly knew on some level it had affection for him, but hearing that equated so bluntly to love was too much to process right away. At least he came around. The ending is actually pretty sweet. Originally there was a joke in the script where Spock wonders whether Cochrane is a bigamist given that the commissioner/companion were essentially 2 beings in 1 body. Kirk dismissed the notion. At any rate, you've got Cochrane, who left civilization behind to die alone after making an incredible contribution, the Companion who is essentially a prisoner on that planetoid and is itself desperately lonely in it's own way(later understanding human loneliness is even worse) leading to it keeping Cochrane there, and finally Hedford who always wrapped herself up in her work and only realizes how empty her life was as it neared it's end. 3 very isolated individuals finally able to have real companionship. I can't blame Cochrane for asking to be left alone. He finally has something that was missing from his life for almost 250 years. The last thing he wants to be doing is signing autographs. I can understand the sentiment that he's the weakest part of the episode, but at the same time, it's an interesting one to come back to knowing the rest of the character's story. It's actually a nice capstone to his character's story.

There was a 3rd appearance, but probably best to leave such things for them to discover on their own

The Star Trek character Zefram Cochrane also appears in TWO OTHER 'Trek stories. The character's second 'Trek appearance is in the 8th movie, "FIRST CONTACT" (TNG cast, directed by Jonathan Frakes), and stars major film actor James Cromwell portraying Z' Cochrane in the movie. the second 'Trek film with The Next Generation cast. Cromwell JUST THIS PAST SUMMER reprised the role - in animated form - for "Star Trek: Lower Decks," Season Three's first episode, "Grounded."

I would point out some interesting Hollywood trivia about the guest actress, Elinor Donahue, but that trivia would spoil a surprise in another, upcoming Season Two episode. "You'll see.......!" (I'll refer to this later, after you watch that other story -- which I will not divulge the name of here as another surprise for you guys. Everyone who's seen 'Trek's production backstories will know exactly what I am referring to. There's SO MUCH to tell, and you will love hearing about it when it's time to tell the tale.

I can't imagine what Kirk ended up putting in his report of this incident.

Glenn Corbett delivered nearly the exact same line in an episode in which he guested for the series LAND OF THE GIANTS. Weird.

Spot on

Collin Freeman

I think Scotty was originally supposed to be in the shuttlecraft in the first draft of this script, which would have been cool given he being the chief engineer and Zephram Cochrane invented the warp drive. Looking forward to the next episode.

I have a scratch on my disk - this is the first one in the second season I haven't been able to watch along with you guys. I think I get the ones Josh likes - so prove me wrong Josh - - - I really think you will like the next one.

Ricky Johnson

Now that is a cool piece of trivia.

Neat trivia (from the website Memory Alpha): Symbolically, the colored patterns in the scarf worn by the Commissioner are identical to the patterns in the energy field of the Companion. This is shown clearly as she looks at Cochrane through the scarf near the end of the episode. This wasn't scripted or even intended by the production staff. Director Ralph Senensky came up with the idea on the set, calling it "one of those wonderful freak accidents that happen".

I suspect Cochrane will have to hear her speak with that echo in her voice from now on. It also makes you wonder how much of the Commissioner remains as she was about to die, if she even remotely is still there she is delighted to be able to finally experience love for herself. I bet they went into the guys who did their special effects with that exact scarf and said use this as your guide to what we want to come alive make it move, change colours, and sparkle. The one thing this episode and seems to start around this time is William Shatner's gestures as well as dragging out his words. This is what has caused people to do bad impressions of him and believe he did all the time which wasn't the case. As per William Shatner he recently said when asked about that and he said he most likely was forgetting his lines and spoke as they came back to him.

Brad Barter

Cochrane is a character you will see explored more down the road in other iterations. This episode and especially the next episode coming up both contribute a lot to the overall Star Trek universe.

Jonathan

Zefram Cochrane is revered for not only developing Earth's first warp drive engines but also making first contact with an alien civilization (Vulcans).

It’s on YouTube, too.😉

The Enterprise Incidents podcast for this episode had guest Ralph Selensky, the director. Score! He talks about his technique and approach. It's fascinating, if you're interested in checking it out.
