UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E8 I, Mudd

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard The craziest episode but so much fun. Now sex? Yes please. Kirk 5 Chekov 2 New +1 Bones 1 Spock 1 Extra: Harry Mudd +5 (at least) Yes Chekov scores with a couple of Alices (or is it Alici). This puts him in a short time to the 2nd most photon shooter. Mudd I – Harry for sure scored +5 (Alice, Barbara, Maize, Trudy, and of course Annabel). Now really he likely scored many many times after all, he is Harry Mudd. Now though we must address an important issue. Mudd – 500. Yes Harry gets a negative 500 also for the end. There is shrinkage; from fear, from cold. But there is a complete turtle head hiding when it comes to a shrieking nagging person like Stella. side note: If EVER there was a Star Trek ep screaming for a porn parody it is this one. I mean please. Twins, multiple partners, only a few guys, and not that impressive given the tights they wore. And of course Harry F-in Mudd.

Just about every Trek series needs it's goofy, light hearted episodes to balance out the more serious subject matter. Usually you can tell if it's going to be one from pretty early on. Granted there may be a serious problem in the background, but more downplayed. There was a risk of basically a galaxy wide curfew being imposed, but nothing akin to the planet killer or superhumans starting a new empire. I love how Kirk is like a parent trying to wrangle his kids who spent the whole day at an amusement park and don't want to leave, and how he's basically just annoyed by the whole thing toward the end. That last act where the mime the androids into shutting down is probably about the most fun the cast got to have in any one episode, with maybe a couple others giving it a run for it's money. Scotty just returning from "the dead" as soon as they start talking about explosives😂. Also Kirk's incredibly insincere "Uhura, why did you tell her?" cracks me up. 500 Stellas is definitely cruel and unusual punishment. 2 would have done it. Yeah, it's not a story that really sticks with you or makes any top 10 lists, but it's definitely a lot of fun.

Cyrano I found much more benign than Mudd. Just a guy trying to make a buck(credit) and getting in over his head. Mudd might not be a malicious psychopath(in TOS anyway), but he does try and take over the Enterprise any chance he gets. Cyrano reminds me a bit more of a certain ferengi.

I'm so happy you enjoyed Harry Mudd so much! Roger Carmel's acting is so funny, I love it. Now, you've already seen the episode The Trouble with Tribbles, and in my opinion, the character Cyrano Jones is very similar to Harry Mudd, regarding just the way he's played and the "cheekiness" of him. In my mind, this also could have been Harry Mudd, but I'm glad they went for someone else in the tribble episode.

DataDroid

One of my favorites!

Firekrys FWO

The androids had all been reprogrammed by the crew.

MntrTodd

The actor also got to play a similar character on 2 episodes of the Batman tv series with Adam West as the villain in a crossover episode with the Green Hornet

Jonathan

He does, however, appear as a character in ST:Discovery (a prequel version of Harry, rather nastier than this one).

Ken Schneyer

The goofy sequence in the last act was so much fun that I can watch it over and over & never get tired. The actors were clearly having a blast.

Ken Schneyer

Roger C. Carmel was the voice of Snoopy in one of the original Peanuts cartoons. :)

Ken Schneyer

That’s a great way to put it! I remember feeling that way about Shore Leave following Balance of Terror

I loved how they all had to work to overload the androids, except Spock, who simply said a few words and shut them down.

They considered bringing Harry back in the first season of The Next Generation (he'd be over 100 in universe, I believe), but the actor died before they could get a story ready.

Well hopefully knowing the Enterprise crew have one more run in with Harry Mudd will inspire you to delve into the animated series.

Brad Barter

We talk about that in our Q&A we filmed which will be coming soon

Josh (Target Audience)

One day Alex, you will see Tom Hardy in Star Trek. You will also see the return of Harry Mudd in new Trek played by Rainn Wilson. Rainn is a Star Trek fan.

BURKE Wells

Yeah, the animation may not be impressive, but it was above par for TV cartoons of its day, and the stories are on the whole intelligent and good Star Trek. Dorothy Fontana made sure of that.

James H

The comedic episodes are like palate cleansers from the more common serious ones. I think this one goes a little too far in the humor area for my taste, but it is enjoyable in certain scenes. it seems like the entire cast enjoyed making this one.

Collin Freeman

Since the android Norman was off world at the beginning and the androids had managed to beam down the entire crew then they must have either their own transporter device and/or their own shuttles/space craft.

Brad Barter

This is one pf the fun episodes. The actor that played Mudd is brilliant. IT is so very cruel that they leave Mudd with all those nagging androids at the end. Do they just nag him all day? day after day? Also how did they get back to the enterprise if all the androids were immobolized?

Carl Peterson

I was wondering if you guys will be reacting (between the end of the 3rd season and the first movie Star Trek The Motion Picture) the 2 seasons (22 episodes but less time than TOS for each) of Star Trek The Animated series? The reason am asking is because Mudd (actual actor playing the voice) returns but in animated form. Also so you know all main cast actors except Walter Koenig (Chekov) were back doing the voices of their characters. They couldn't justify the cost of having everyone back and initially had rejected Sulu and Uhura as well but Leonard Nimoy said if they aren't included then he wouldn't be involved. It's cheesy as well as okay but not great animation but it does continue their 5 year mission and has since become a part of Star Trek cannon. Walter Koenig was involved in writing at least one of the animated series episodes so he was involved just behind the scenes.

Brad Barter

Sometime back in the late 90s I did IT work with a guy who could have been an ancestor of Harry Mudd! He always had a side scam going on and if you got involved it was always bad news and he always got fired or in some kind of trouble. He even resembled the actor that plays Mudd.
