One more toast, to the red shirt who put up a good fight! But those starship commanders just always seem to have an extra gear.

I always liked seeing Enterprise's sisters. Something to always remember when looking back nowadays is that before Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, seeing multiple spacecraft on screen was a rarity. I was thankful to the special editions, despite some missteps, making the effort to add in some of the little ships that were mentioned but never shown due to budget, like the Antares in season 1, the various Klingon encounters, and so forth. If only FX had been easier back in 1967!

Seeing two Constitution class starships in one episode, one messed up, seeing the auxiliary control, all of it was such a mind blowing event in the 70's (yes I am that old). I guess that doesn't seem as big a deal now.

Great that you are doing the original Battlestar Galactica! It was groundbreaking in many ways, bringing TV sci-fi into the post-Star Wars era, and it's a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy it!

Uh oh - Catspaw is up next - a bottom 10 candidate, in my opinion at least. Star Trek and a Halloween-themed plot do not go well together. A few entertaining bits - but otherwise …

John Schmitt

I just heard that you intend to do Battlestar Galactica - but the 1978 original, not the 2004 remake. No harm in seeing the original, to see where the ideas for the show came from, but it is dated IMO, and the 2004 remake is wonderful. Maybe you will get to the 2004 version too ?

John Schmitt

One thing to note about the upcoming episode (Episode 7, "Catspaw") is that they deliberately altered the release schedule so that it would come out four days before Halloween...

You will eventually run across other Star Fleet ships that are well run, and captains who are competent. But the presence of a command-level officer on the Enterprise doesn't really have any other dramatic purpose but to create conflict.

Ken Schneyer

This is one of the problems of making the First Officer also the Science Officer. You give the same person two different watches to stand, which isn't really possible.

Ken Schneyer

Military posts typically have a rotation of watches, usually 4 hours long (on current Navy vessels). Uhura and Chekov wouldn't be on the bridge 100% of the time. (More to the point, though, Kirk and Spock typically wouldn't be on the bridge at the same time either; the First Officer would relieve the Captain for one watch, and the Second Officer would for another. Technically Scotty is the third-ranking officer, but he has to stand watches in Engineering, so I'm guessing Sulu or Uhura would command during that period.)

Ken Schneyer

William Windom was a very successful actor of that era; you can find numerous films and TV shows with his work. Probably the best guest star Trek ever employed.

This was James (Scotty) Doohan's favorite episode.

Any technical jargon was probably pretty right on back then but not so much now. It has been 50 years since this aired. Things change. I think y'all are spot on about this episode also. Great guest appearance especially at the beginning. The plot is fast and engaging with a decent resolution. the doomsday machine looks pretty bad but that will happen again. One time the alien space craft looks like a big gigantic turd. So this episode is solid and fun to watch again and again. Unfortunately, the next episode is one of my least favorites. But the season gets much better soon.
