UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E5 The Apple

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard A new main crew member makes an entrance (so to speak). Kirk 5 Bones 1 Spock 1 Chekov +1 NEW +1 Extra: Hey hey. Chekov scores. The Russian takes a turn at a yummy yeoman. I wonder how many positions did he talk her into by using the phrase “da it vas sa Varussian Indention” (hard to write a Russian accent) . I think I could go to a sex act called "Russian" but I am not sure what it is .....so I will avoid it in case it would cause another FBI file to be opened on me.

I never realized how much I suspend my disbelief every time I see that guy get 'killed' with the stick. Yeah Spock gets really hammered in this one. Hope he got another kind of hammered back aboard ship lol. And the ladies do kick ass season 2 without a doubt. Hell even my girl Roberta gives Mr. Seven a good whack later in season. lol

Definitely a mid tier TOS episode, but it's not boring at least, nor uncomfortable to watch like some. It's mediocre, but still pretty entertaining. I remember as a kid this episode got me on the edge of my seat with the myriad dangers present on the planets and how fast the redshirts were falling to them(still don't buy the one guy dying from being lightly whacked in the shoulder blade by a stick though). This definitely is a big contributor to the redshirt trope. I don't think I appreciated till now how much of a punching bag Spock was in this episode. That one yeoman kicked ass though. Between Uhura in Mirror and Landon here, they really started letting the ladies in on the action this season And yeah, they basically 2 of TOS most common tropes(crazy computers and god entities) and merged them together.

Honestly I never noticed that they were giving Vaal the rocks. I saw this episode a dozen of times as a kid, but on a low resolution CRT screen, it always slipped by. Makes way more sense than the baskets of fruit I assumed back then. They even establish the rocks as a fuel source earlier.

This is one of my "lower" favorites for its sheer silliness, and the "parade of dead redshirts" as mentioned in another comment lol. I love this "planet of the week" more than most bc of the flowers, the landmine rocks and the lurid red sky. Also, growing up in the 70s, it was interesting to me to later learn that David Soul (who starred as Hutch in TVs Starsky and Hutch ('71-'75) and also had at least one hit single as a singer) was one the orange-skinned natives (Makara - the one kissing the girl). It also appeals to me bc I love mocking Akuta near the end when he is pleading to go feed Vaal. "Let us go to him he hungers... PLEASE!!" lol But yeah, it's pretty weak overall. Mirror and Doomsday easily kick its ass.

Watching you two guys react is a real pleasure. I just joined your Patreon but followed your ST reactions from the beginning. I’m in my 70s - a big ST fan from 1960s onward. I was fortunate to have a personal encounter with William Shatner last month. The man is a marvel at age 91. Looking forward to the rest of your ST reactions along with Firefly. I think you would like BS Galactica too.

I have a tendency to refer to this episode as "Parade of the Dead Redshirts". I think this is where the term "redshirt" must have been cemented with all of its negative connotations.

Collin Freeman

The next episode is my favorite I think, up there with Edith Keeler, two Kirks, Amok Time, Mirror, and Journey to Babel. This one was very mediocre to me, I enjoy Apollo much more thanks to the actor.

Yup. As a kid, I was a bit freaked out by the killer flowers. Overall the story doesn't hold up, however, there were a couple of bits that I enjoyed. Still had a fun time. Four redshirts and Spock was the Alien Punching Bag A lot of these episodes I watch more from a nostalgic viewpoint as opposed to a practical one, which is why I love your opinions so much. it's quite refreshing.

This episide out of the entire orignal series definitely has the most things happen to Spock than any other episode before or after it. So far as you have seen this has been a season of hit, miss, hit, miss run of episodes and so with that in mind I can't wait for the next episode The Doomsday Machine which is not only one of the best episodes of the orignal series and voted on as well but has also been listed on the greatest Star Trek episodes of all time including all from the TNG, DS9 and Voyager episodes which Mirror Mirror was also on that list. Incidentally Chekov's first name is Pavel.

Brad Barter

Thanks for the great reaction. I know a lot of fans don't care for it but I've always thought it was a fun watch. There's a lot of humor (the garden of Eden was just outside of Moscow) and as you pointed out, it's well paced. There are a couple that I won't watch again (Miri and Charlie X for example) but I'll always watch this one.

This was the first episode of live action Star Trek I saw as a kid so I like this episode more than most people. Even the weaker episodes like this one or the “Halloween Special” in two episodes is fun because you can tell the cast is in on the joke. Sulu misses a lot of episodes this season because George was filming a Vietnam War movie.

Guys I’ve really been enjoying your reactions to these episodes especially the full reactions. I don’t know if you noticed this or not but the villagers were feeding Vol with the explosive rocks. Them not supplying him with more energy allowed the phaser barrage to drain all of his power. I wasn’t sure you’d like this one because it’s kind of combining the God episode with the machine episode. It’s an OK episode but the next one is an absolute classic. It’s right up there with mirror mirror as far as I’m concerned.
