UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E4 Mirror, Mirror

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard Kirk 5 new +1 (new +2?) Bones 1 Spock 1 Extra: This is the Kirk I remember. Bangin’ the girl, making her go uuuhhhh-oooohhhh oh my Master and Commander, make her fall in love, leaving her in another universe. YEAH BABY!! You been Kirked. Now a big question is does Kirk get a two-fer. Yes in the mirror U, Lt Marlena Moreau watched the mirror on the bedroom ceiling but when they get back to the real world a new crew member Lt Moreau and Kirk end with the captain throwing the line out ready to hook another. So is it 2 or 1?

I love how it's taken over a week as patron to realise i can see your full reaction to my favourite TOS episode, call it too many braincells rotted by beer i guess. Obviously S!

I really like that Prime!Kirk asked Mirror!Spock about the future - knowing Spock, ALL Spocks, so well that of COURSE he's thought about the future, and even a poor human like Kirk can see the inevitable course of the Empire - so Spock must have.

Alex von Hochtritt

Really wanted to see the parallel universe more in the series but on a good note this evil mirrored universe showed up for a number of episodes in Star Trek DS9. Ironically DS9 was a parallel Trek series to TNG for awhile ;-)

As a kid, this episode really caught me off guard. The agonizers, assassinations, genocide, etc... stood in such contrast to everything the protagonists represent. It's like a horror story. Pretty tame as an adult, but when I was 5 or 6, different story. Chekov's ambush of Kirk especially was so sudden, and his busted lip more violent than the typical brawls in the show. It is a really fun episode though. The core idea of "evil twin universe" is kind of campy, but very well executed. The whole cast got some great material to work with. Uhura you could tell was pretty scared about the whole situation, but she pushed through it and played the role of her counterpart masterfully. Mirror Spock came across much as our Spock, just adapting to the realities of the empire. Chekov and Sulu's schemes were fun to watch, and I'm always down for Scotty getting more to do. I love how quickly he's ready to stay behind at the end. No hesitation. As for Kirk, there are so many layers to Shatner's performance. He got his bearings pretty quickly, but watching him try to maintain his cover while avoiding doing something he can't live with is great. The brief scene of mirror Kirk bargaining with Spock was a lot of fun as well. Fantastic episode.

RIP Nichelle. I have been a Trek fan since I was 5, back in the 70's. A great loss.

Chuck Rice

I knew you would love this episode with Spock and his beard. Spock is the best in any universe.

Carl Peterson

lol. You're welcome!

Michael Nemo

Thank you so much for a great reaction to my favorite episode. For your short takes on YouTube, your prediction about Marlaina showing up at the end and your reaction when she does.. so fun!!! Great reaction!

Gary Leyh

OMG...I've seen this episode probably 20 times and I've never noticed that detail. Thank you!

Gary Leyh

Did you notice the computer is male?

Michael Nemo

They didn't have green screens in the 60's.

Michael Nemo

YES YES AND YEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!! The Goatee, and of course the Facial Scar.

Firekrys FWO

I've been waiting for you guys to get to this one. A classic that pop culture has taken to. Now whenever you have the character be the "evil" version of themselves, they usually get the Spock goatee.

Pondo

Forgot to mention that speech at the end has spawned merchandise just like Edith Keeler must die. Picture of evil spock saying , "one man cannot summon the future"

Ricky Johnson

Yea, DC Fontana has a story about how she got a specific censor to ignore it - I've forgotten the details.

George Takei did eventually play a somewhat-villainous character, the father of one of the main characters in the TV series "Heroes."

Ken Schneyer

Damn, when they do a close up on Nichelle's face she is just stunning.

Chas Summers

There is also a very well-done fan-made "episode" showing what happens immediately after this, when Kirk the Tyrant returns to find the newly changed Spock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJf2ovQtI6w&t=1s

George Lucas and, for the Marvel fans out there, Stan Lee watched Star Trek back in the day. You can start to see some ideas Lucas picked up on and maybe redressed them for Star Wars. Evil Empire destroying whole populations to maintain fear throughout the system. If only Star Trek came up with the idea of a giant traveling weapon that could destroy whole planets… Hmm.

BURKE Wells

The "mirror universe" casts a very long shadow in Trek. It will reappear in DS9, in ST:Enterprise, in ST:Discovery; it seems to be practically inexhaustible as a source for plots. Indeed, this specific episode (and the moment at its end) will cast a shadow all by itself.

Ken Schneyer

In 1967, I don't think anyone on TV had done an alternate-universe trope (although it had appeared in fiction), so this episode was shocking and delightful to fans at the time. Back in the day, a lot of kids watched this show, and one young fan wrote to the producers that Kirk really should have a "Captain's Woman." The producers wrote him a carefully worded letter suggesting that he talk with this parents about this, and that a "Captain's Woman...is not a nice lady."

Ken Schneyer

This episide especially during the 60s was one of the rare TV shows that allowed not just one but two women's navels to be seen throughout the episode whenever Nichelle and the woman who played Marlena were onscreen. Starting with Gilligan's Island and I Dream of Jeannie the TV Censors demanded that when Ginger, Maryanne and Jeannie wore shorts or outfits that exposed their mid sections that the navel be covered as they believed it was erotic otherwise. Correct me if I am wrong but from what I remember all future TOS episodes where the mid section was bare had their navels covered by raised waistlines and alien clothing designs extending over it.

Brad Barter

Love the mirror universe episodes of Star Trek! It shows up again in other ST series and it's awesome to see the continuity and the effects the events of this episode has on that universe. One of my fave Uhura episodes too! The story goes that they had to sneak the women's outfits in this episode past the censors by filming those scenes when the censor people were being distracted. Apparently tv audiences in the 60s weren't quite ready to look at a woman's belly button ... 🤷‍♀️

Elizabeth N

Not gonna lie, I teared up when Uhura was onscreen. This is one of her best episodes; she was sadly underutilized overall. While I didn't know her personally, I'm going to miss her nevertheless. She was a queen.

Lin Phillips

This is my 2nd favorite episode of season 2 and my 5th favorite episode of all. It was also top 2 favorite episodes for George Takei and Nichelle Nichols. Did you see those washboard abs on Nichelle Nichols? Damn!

Collin Freeman

Such an iconic episode, with probably one of the best uses of the ensemble cast. Uhura in particular shines here. RIP Nichelle Nichols

Dion James Pitman

I can't tell you how ground breaking this episode was - in 1967 no one had conceived of alternate universes outside of theoretical physicists and a couple of scifi novels. Now the idea has permeated throughout our culture - and nothing beats Spock with a beard! Top 5.
