FIRST TIME WATCHING: LOGAN (2017)

Comments

I love this film so much. I love the sadness, the bleakness. Regarding Charles, the question was what happens when a crazily powerful telepath, psychic, a person who can freeze people with his mind - what happens when that guy gets dementia? That's what happened. That's how Patrick Stewart was playing him. It's so realistic it gave me chills. Hugh Jackman playing his caregiver also gave me chills. Logan loves him and hates him at the same time. He is 100% waiting for Charles to die, Charles was accurate in saying that.

Hazel Angus

The radio said, I think, that 600 people were injured and "several" of the X Men were killed. We don't know whether his psychic seizure killed all of them, but I don't know what shape they'd be in if they were alive. The part about 600 being injured - clearly not everybody died. Having said that, I guess most X-Men would be closer to the centre of whatever shockwave was produced.

Hazel Angus

I wasn’t a fan of this movie, but it’s not part of the sacred timeline so it’s fine, now it’s Deadpool 3 time baby!

Bram Fatman Hènry

Now this is how you make an established superhero franchise darker. Easily the best X-Men movie...

Michael Celia

I wasn’t speaking from timeline of the other movies either, only because New Mutants really doesn’t have connection to anything. Dark Phoenix is technically a continuation from First Class and DOFP so I doubt they would skip it. New Mutants doesn’t have those connections so it’s more likely to be skipped.

Xxdjwellsxx

@aldo You realize they’ve been watching every X-Men movie so they’re not gonna skip the last one right? They even mention it multiple times in this. Just because you don’t want them to isn’t gonna change that. Sounds like you’re choosing what movies they watch so maybe you should update your title to “boss” so you stand out more. I’m sure they’d love to hear your plans for growing THEIR channel.

Xxdjwellsxx

Honestly hope y’all watch the New Mutants movie as it was a spinoff and greatly under appreciated

Tatumness

Logan also had trouble healing because the government was putting something in the food supply that slowly suppressed mutant powers.

Farva

This takes place past the epilogue of DoFP, the revised future, as others stated. The timeline doesn't matter really. And the X-Men were killed by Charles, he had an uncontrollable psychic event mentioned of the radio that killed them all, hence why his brain is considered a weapon of mass destruction by the government. Logan’s illness was a combo of age and the breakdown of the adamantium in his system, which his healing factor allowed him to endure. He got his healing factor back after the Japan set movie, but with time it wasn’t enough to stave off the toxicity and rapid healing it required. His immortality started wearing off. I always liked the idea of X-24 being what Logan could have become if left unchecked and untamed. Literally fighting his own worst potential.

trlb

Thank you Fox (insert sarcasm here) - they completely disrepected the comics througout and it shows. The only good X-Men movies were the first and second, and then Logan. Just those 3. All others were completely horrible in my opinion.

The Dingo

And no, she meant Laura. After all, Logan didn't die in Wolverine at all :) At least that is the commonly accepted canon

The Dingo

Logan is set in the same timeline as the other X-Men movies. Days of Future Past would have been the future had they not changed it. When they went back in time and fixed everything, it changed the future. What we see in Logan is that changed future, but it's not an alternate timeline at all.

The Dingo

When this movie came out it was marketed as it's own thing and not a continuation of anything. That's what I love about Deadpool he is completely meta and just lives in the fox universe timeline where it's all canon to him.

Strav 23

I thought that there was some debate on this being an alternate timeline / universe or not? I see as much argument for as against. So I don't think we can definitively say that it's not.

Wendy Sparks

That's confusing... days of future past ended with them being in 2023, their future now changed. I'm pretty sure Logan was also confirmed to not actually be set in the 'main' xmen timeline that we know... I think some people like to think that's what Yukio's 'foreshadowing' was once Logan came out, but it actually was just referring to the scene where he had his literal heart in his hand and was dying in the Wolverine movie.

Foof

I am very excited for this, I never watched it before.

Flopsi80

They mentioned what happened to the X-Men on the radio in the car y'all missed it

Rashad Walker

To clarify few things, this isn't an alternate universe ...the last time we seen the OG X-Men were in days of futures past which was in 2014....they had a time jump 15 years so the fact that Logan was healing fast is his cells wasn't regenerating like normal.....he's aging faster and body is breaking down. Yuiko's foreshadowing from the last movie of Logan dying with his heart in his hand was him dying on his back holding Laura's hand

Rashad Walker

Laura was so good , what an incredible talent

Kim Magee

I know they are, but that's gonna be long. I hope after deadpool 3 they get to agatha, maybe on wednesdays to catch up with the main mcu

FedeM

It's basically just accepted at this point that the timeline of X-Men movies makes no sense lol. Hell Deadpool himself said it in 2016 and it never changed after. If yiu try to piece together where things fit it'll never make sense. Deadpool 3 included. It's basically take each adventure as it's own thing and don't think about it or you'll wonder how Charles eent from James McAvoy to Patrick Stewart in the same decade lol

Ae Jae Meade

They are doing the defenders saga(daredevil, jessica johnes, etc, etc) for the moment, they'll get to Agatha

Deathhead

Opps, I meant X-Men Dark Phoenix, not Apocalypse.

Jen D. Niimii Migiizi Kwe

As a comic fan I really dug picking out who the genetic donors for the other kids were. I really dug Rictor's depiction in this. Even in his few scenes, it really fit my memory of the character from his introduction like 30+ years ago (that makes me feel so old); not teh exact origin obviously but the performance was solid. I wish we had gotten a better New Mutants movie but the casting in that was also good, even if the film was fairly meh.

James W.

I just hope, once they're done with the movies, that they watch agatha all along

FedeM

Rob and Trin already watched Deadpool and Deadpool 2 back in 2023, so they really only have Dark Pheonix left; and that only if they want to be completionists. They can definitely watch Deadpool and Wolverine without Dark Phoenix since at that point it is purely a First Class timeline movie with no real connection to X-Men (2000) continuity which Deadpool pulls most of it references from. They might need a refresher since it has been a while but they watch their own reactions for that :D Knowing Rob and Trin they will watch Dark Phoenix anyways, and that is kind of a capper for the First Class storyline since we are unlikely to see those folks again. Unless Disney decides to reboot using some of the actors from those films. I would love to MacAvoy and Fassbender in the roles again, and Sophie Turner to get another crack at Jean Grey as she really looks the part even if the writing for Jean in Phoenix is a bit weak. Evan Peter's Quicksilver would be rad too but that would require a massive amount of retcon for an MCU introduction since their Quicksilver is very dead and they have already played around with that as much as they really can the cheeky WandaVision appearance.

James W.

Hugh is so phenomenal in this movie. It's amazing that he did Logan and The Greatest Showman in the same year. Shows how much range he has. ❤

Ninaofthe90s

Yukio: "I saw you die. You were on your back, there's blood everywhere. You were holding your own heart in your hands." Logan dies while holding his daughters hand. She's his heart. And like Yukio said: She's never wrong. I think that quote is one of the most important quotes to remember.

Ninaofthe90s

Edit: Massive Nerdy screed :D Logan has claws naturally as part of his mutation but the procedure they did on him bonded adamantium to his skeleton. That is only possible because of his healing abilities. As far as we have seen in the films that has only worked on people like him and Yuriko (from X2) William Striker's mutant bodyguard. In this they have Laura and the X-24 Logan clone. In the comics there are a few others that had various implementations of Adamantium but most of those were just put in to have someone who could stand up to how OP Wolverine got as he grew in popularity. They made Laura with his powers as a test to see if they could replicate it but I don't think they understood that along with the Logan's healing factor, heightened senses, and claws, it also comes along with a bestial nature that is unlocked when he is pressed. In the comics it was like a trope, when they think they finally got Wolvy down he would go into beserk beast-mode and then everyone would die. I assume that is where gets her fighting skill, a mistake by the Transigen folks thinking Logan's savagery was purely a product of his personality and life experience rather than a byproduct of his mutation. The crew of dudes hunting Laura is a reference to a group from the comics called the 'Reavers' . It was a bunch of private soldiers, primarily from an X-Men villain group called the 'Hellfire Club'. The soldiers had all gone up against the X-men/Logan at one time or another and lost. They got bionic replacements and dedicated themselves to getting revenge on him. In this movie they basically replace their focus on Wolverine, for Laura (subject X-23) and also probably the other kids. I just assumed those missing limbs are from times they tried to subdue Laura and failed. You'd think they would be more careful but in the end they are all just goons. The 'canon' in comics in general is a hot mess but particularly in X-Men. I collected the comics for about a decade, from the late 80s to the late 90s/early 00s, before i tapped out. Largely because they kept undoing important events, especially character deaths. Deaths of Xavier, Magneto, Colossus, Logan, Jean Grey (so many times), and many others have been reversed/retconned so it starts to loose meaning. The movies fall prey to that as well to a lesser degree since the introduction of the 'X-Men: First Class' alternate timeline. I take 'Logan' as the dark timeline follow up to the Brian Singer X-Men timeline but in particular 'Days of Future Past' and 'The Wolverine'. I think this movie combined with the Deadpool series so far is a grey capper for the Singer/Fox X-Men continuity. I don't really know how Disney will be able to bring in a new cast for the MCU version of the X-Men that people won't poop on. MacAvoy, Stewart, Fassbender, McKellan, and many of that cast are so stamped on movie goers that care about the series, it will be hard to replace them.

James W.

I just hope when we get to Deadpool 3 you guys record your reaction to the end credits as well :))) it made me tear it up in the cinema…

Cynthia

Love this movie, got my night planned :)

Kim Magee

Dark Phoenix doesn’t count. They did what they had to do. Deadpool & Wolverine is next.

Aldo Gonzales

Dark Phoenix, then Deadpool and Wolverine and y’all are caught with all the X-Men AND MCU movies!! That’s if you don’t count The New Mutants but honestly it doesn’t matter where you watch that movie in the timeline at this point.

Xxdjwellsxx

I don't like Dark Phoenix as much either but I watched a reaction to it recently and seeing people untainted enjoy it made me have a bit more fun watching it. Sometimes being a huge nerd ruins things. I found the casting in the First Class universe to be hit or miss with a few exceptions but as a huge comics fan I think think they nailed that casting of Sophie Turner's Jean and Cody Schmidt's Kurt, I just wish it was in a better written film so we could've see them grow into the characters a bit. It was a bummer to see the series go out on a down note similar to how X3 was a bit shit.

James W.

It’s pretty dark that Charles killed the X-Men

SlipS_Tiger

Great movie, great reaction. The actress who plays the nurse Gabriella is Elizabeth Rodriguez, who you know from 'Fear the Walking Dead' season 1 as Lisa, Travis' ex-wife. Logan doesn't have a wasting disease per-se, it is actually the combination of his body being poisoned by the adamantium skeleton, hard-living, and that his powers are weakening as he ages that was killing him. He is over 200 years old at this point and has been a hard drinker and smoker his whole life. When he was younger his healing factor could deal with any health repercussions from all of that, kind like Wade's cancer in Deadpool 2, when his powers are turned off any ailment he has is still there and comes back with a vengeance. It is kinda wild to think that if Logan just stopped drinking and smoking, and if he didn't have the adamantium poisoning him, he is functionally immortal. It is why I feel like he was OP after reading comics for a long time. Short of disintegrating him, he is unkillable. I think this movie gracefully handles how he would end up. Edit for comments in the outro: Dark Phoenix is a continuation from the First Class timeline, Logan is more from the original film timeline (XMen, X2, X3. Wolvy Origins, The Wolverine, and Days of Future Past). The X-Men spinoff TV shows like Legion, The Gifted, and the various animated shows all seem to riff off on their own take of the comics, not the films really, so there really is no canon. Legion was really good though, worth a watch if you aren't burnt out of the X-Men Multiversal mess.

James W.

Guys could you maybe rewatch the Deadpool movies? And I don't mean for a reaction I meant on our own. There are so many references, quotes and jokes referring to the x-men franchise, but also Logan/Wolverine and Hugh Jackman. It would make so much more sense watching it now. Especially before going into Deadpool & Wolverine.

Ninaofthe90s

I think it's Dark Phoenix next. Not that I particularly like it.

Ninaofthe90s

I feel old. They were watching 'Shane'... a classic western (1953). "Shane... come back!" Charles was really rounding up... the movie would only be 76 years old in 2029.

Octavia

Trin: seems like he wants to be off the grid but there is always something pulling him back in. Lady: Wolverine! I knew it was you. Trin: ah, okay 😂

Ben

They already saw Apocalypse. Up next is Deadpool & Wolverine.

Aldo Gonzales

This is one of the saddest movies ever made and also one of the greatest movies of all time. It's so much more than a superhero movie. It's serious and very mature and bleak. It has the depth and feel of a western like 'Unforgiven' for example. I remember back in 2017 when the trailer came out, I was crying already because they used 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash in it. And it was so sad, but it just captured this movie perfectly. The performances were phenomenal. Hugh is the best.

Ninaofthe90s

Don't forget there's 1 more X-Men movie left, X-Men Apocalypse, then we can get to Deadpool and Wolverine, I hope, cuz it's freaking amazing, in my opinion. Also looking forward to R&T watching Agatha All Aong, it's perfection 👌

Jen D. Niimii Migiizi Kwe

A Top 3 marvel movie. And not 3.

IsaMeM4RIO

I hope someone warned them... in the midst of comedy month... that this is the polar opposite. So painful, but so good.

Octavia

Before I get started on the fun facts, I just wanna say a few things. First… Congratulations, Rob & Trin. Since you guys already saw Deadpool 2, not only have you finally completed the X-Men film series but you’ve also met the required criteria for Deadpool & Wolverine. And guess: the blockbuster everyone’s been waiting for is finally available for streaming on Disney Plus same for Agatha All Along. Second, we’re getting What If season 3 late next month. It’ll be the final season of the show, and this time it’ll be eight episodes long. So with all that out of the way, onto the fun facts about the movie. Looking back, this movie also has a few parallels to a few shows you reacted to. First, there’s Stranger Things. Zander Rice kept Laura and her friends locked in a lab just like Brenner did with Jane Ives/Eleven and the other kids including you-know-who. Logan and Laura also have a bit of a dynamic like Jim Hopper and Eleven. Then there’s The Last of Us. Joel Miller was a broken man who didn’t care about Ellie at first, but over the course of their journey they became a father-daughter duo. In a similar sense, Logan was reluctant to help at first but by the end he became the father Laura had wanted. If you’re wondering why this movie gives Breaking Bad vibes, that’s because a lot of the film’s production took place in New Mexico. And there is one more parallel I can’t forget to mention: the High Evolutionary from Guardians Volume 3. While Rice was creating living weapons, the High Evolutionary was creating what he called the perfect society. What both of them have in common is that they don’t care about who they’re experimenting on to the point of discarding them. Two years before we cried for Tony in Avengers: Endgame, we cried for Logan. Other reactors who have gotten into the X-Men movies over the last 3-4 years have felt the same way. Laila Naema, Sebscreen, Natalie Gold, Mary Cherry, VKunia, Addie Counts, Alex Hefner, The Octobers, Reacts with Jax, The Perfect Mix, and Ashleigh Burton didn’t have a dry eye by the end of the film. I can’t wait for Kaiielle and Emme to get to this one. In Days of Future Past, the X-Men were able to avert total disaster in their original timeline and prevent the sentinels from being created. As a result, when Logan said the events of the Statue of Liberty happened a long time ago he really meant long. He’s the only one who still remembers the old timeline. However, in this new timeline, mutants are still going extinct. This time it’s not because of the Sentinels. Rather, it’s Canewood corn syrup. There have been hints shown throughout the entire movie, but it wasn’t confirmed until Zander Rice brought it up. Any food that contained Canewood corn syrup such as the drinks and cereals he mentioned would reverse the mutagen because Alkali-Transigen would embed the counteragent into the genetically modified corn. To add to that, Charles started losing control of his powers in 2028. In the process, he accidentally killed some of the X-Men. As for Logan, it’s worth remembering that he didn’t always have metal claws. The reason why he’s physically struggling is because the adamantium had been poisoning his body. His healing factor fought the effects for so long, but the metal eventually started breaking down and poisoning his blood. As a result, not only has it affected his ability to heal but it’s also made him begin to age. By the way, the name he used for the limo driver ID is his real name James Howlett. I doubt almost anyone in 2029 would be wondering about his identity and age. I also can’t forget about Laura and her friends. The nurses were all they had as family. Rice ordered to have their biological mothers killed so that no one would talk. At least the nurses had heart and were determined to save them. They didn’t see them as experiments but rather as children and living beings with full lives ahead of them. Some behind the scenes trivia: 1.) Hugh Jackman accepted a pay reduction in order to give this film an R-rating since he didn't wanna hold back on the violence this time around. 2.) Hugh would have two stunt doubles – one for Old Man Logan and one for his clone X-24. When Hugh would portray one of the two, the corresponding stunt double to the other character would step in. 3.) We’re in 2024, but this movie was made about eight years ago. The car they used for the 2024 Chrysler E8 limo that Logan was driving was actually a custom-made Chrysler 300. 4,) The water tower they used in the Juarez set wasn’t some random tower they found. They designed and built it from the ground up. The interior of the tower was even made to be modeled after Cerebro. 5.) The comics used in this movie were drawn by Joe Quesada and Dan Panosian. Director James Mangold was allowed to embed comics into the movie as long as they weren’t actual issues that Marvel published. 6.) Caliban’s power was that he could locate mutants. After he sacrificed himself, the drones that Rice used to locate the kids had some of Caliban’s tissue embedded in them. 7.) Speaking of Rice, the actor who portrayed him is Richard E. Grant. This was his first Marvel role, and eventually he got to portray Classic Loki. 8.) And finally, Dafne Keen was about 10 years old when she auditioned. She pitched in the idea to have Laura speak Spanish, and they gave her the green light. In real life, her father is British and her mother is Spanish. As someone who grew up in a Spanish speaking household, I felt that was a nice touch to her character.
