Dexter: S4E12 The Getaway

Comments

And there it is, BOOM! One of the most shocking deaths in TV. This episode is so masterfully done. The writing is wonderful. At every turn you believe in Dexter, and you are on board with him catching Trinity. It feels familiar, but yet even after he kills him, the epilogue feels familiar and you are at ease. The misdirection with Rita is handled perfectly, and even when Dexter gets her voicemail the penny doesn’t drop until you realise her phone is there… Then Harrison starts to cry….. it’s brilliant TV! Brings the show full circle. It really is one of the best shows, and this episode solidifies it at one of the greatest. Bravo! Plus it really sets the stage for the show moving forward.

Brad Tyler

All I can think of when i watch this episode is the horror, the absolute terror it must have been for Rita in those final moments. Not only for being attacked like that, but Trinity most likely told her why he was doing that, he told her he was doing that because of Dexter. What a nightmare for sweet Rita.

Danilo Carvalho

I never thought about it, but you are absolutely right about Rita!

Julia

I have completely dreaded this episode. The producers said they felt Dexter needed to experience the consequences of his life choices. Breaks my heart everytime.

Janet

I actually love S5 too. I really liked a certain woman we meet. S4 seemed very slow and I thought Rita became a little annoying. Of course I felt awful for feeling that way after I saw her in that tub.

Anthony Fioravaniti

I also would have love to know that

Kamanda Hickey

first time watcher here, I had a terrible feeling this entire episode for rita. i am still stunned beyond belief. :(

Country Mike n The Boys

Waited for this moment and I was balling just hearing Trin and Rob. Seen it a few times and damn if that didn’t gut me too. 😭

kimburley

We’ve all been waiting for your reaction to that moment. One of the biggest sharks in television in my opinion.

Beth

God, seeing Rob cry it just broke my heart...again. I mean, women crying, it's bad, but it happens; children crying, is also bad; they can cry for the silliest of reasons. But seeing a full grown man cry, is not something you see too often. I remember my dad crying at my mum's funeral and I can't remember anything that made me feel worse... It just made me cry again, and I'm almost 40 now.

Gelu Popescu

He did win a Golden Globe though!

Michael Harrop

Michael C Hall got an Emmy nomination for this episode...I can see why (apparently he lost to a dude from some meth show set in New Mexico, don't remember the name, never heard of it).

Michael Celia

the first time i watched this it broke me. And i stopped after this season. took me a while to go into season 5.

Milen Mladenov

Couldn’t believe it when I watched this originally. One of the biggest surprises/wow moments in all tv shows I’ve watched.

AlexH88

Definitely a harsh reminder to the audience that this is a dark show. Dexter is not a hero show.

Octavia

One of the most shocking moments I've seen on TV, so heartbreaking Rita was an innocent victim. But as much as we all love Dexter, he is a mass murderer! And his life is destructive to everyone around him, as much as I believe he wants to protect the people he loves they would all be better off without him. Also the fact Dexter gives Trinity a merciful death out of respect for him, not knowing he has killed his wife!

Michael Harrop

the end of this episode is gut wrenching and one of my least favorite parts of the whole show, and yet, Season 5 is my favorite season.

Ghost Mom

To echo others - Harry and Doakes were both 1000% right. Marriage and family were making Dexter sloppier and sloppier. He was burning the candle at both ends and everything was suffering for it. Doakes was right that no matter his intentions, Dexter was going to bring harm to those close to him. I get why the show killed off Rita. Dexter the killer was being hindered at every turn, making mistakes, and bound to eventually get caught. Maybe he should. But show-wise, there was nowhere to go with Rita except rinse and repeat. Anyone who cared for Rita should've wished her a life with someone like Elliott.

Wendy Sparks

No matter how many time I've watched Dexter this part is always the hardest to watch. Dexter waited way too long to get rid of Trinity, never play with your prey.

Jen D. Niimii Migiizi Kwe

This is tough episode for sure. Even if I remembered how it ended, I was in denial the whole season. Weirdly, I have always been more touched by the cries of baby Harrison . It broke my heart every time when I think about that scene.

Kamanda Hickey

So shocking. I still can't believe show makers killed Rita!

Julia

ohh man i remember watching it the first time..i stopped binge watching it before returning after weeks… So many polls in the net include Rita’s death as one of most shocking death in TV. Gotta say the experience that the writer brought to audience, the feeling of not knowing all the details how it went down cause you werent there, and you have no one to unleash your anger to. Its just very haunting

ramzzor1989

After seeing how trinity does his bathtub kills (fully naked in the tub with the victim) I’m horrified at the thought of what she went through

James

Wow what a great finale, I’m horrified at that ending I cannot believe she’s dead she felt like the type of character that would make it to the end of the show, I feel so bad for Dexter and Rita’s kids oh my god. I’m so happy Trinity is gone he made this season really good but he needed to go especially after that. Wow man I thought we got a happy ending until that last scene and Dexter doesn’t even get the satisfaction of torturing trinity before killing him.

James

I appreciate how much you believe in Dexter, I really do. But Harry is right and so was Doakes. No matter how much Dexter loves his family, no matter how much he wants to protect them - his lifestyle, him associating with serial killers will always put his family at risk. Rita was never safe. I absolutely love the Trinity Killer as a character - But Dexter should've taken care of him a lot sooner and it never would've come to this. Instead he played with fire this entire season and in the end he had to pay the price - or Rita did. I loved Rita and I was dreading this moment. Just the imagination of her final moments make me cry so hard. It's just devastating. But Dexter - you goddamn fool! Sorry you both had to see this Rob & Trin - it never gets any easier 😭

Ninaofthe90s

I have to say this ending was telegraphed for me in the wedding episode, with the spot of blood on Rita’s wedding dress. I always feared this was the inevitable fate for Rita. Dexter had so many chances to stop Trinity, but didn’t. He was too busy playing the game, and Rita payed the price. 😢

Jan T

this remains maybe the most surprising and heartbreaking moment in TV history for me

Brian Clancy

yea but he can tell her dexter TRIED to kill him. i mean it doesn't really make it much worse, her death is bad enough. RIP Rita

Phil Tilly

I am having anxiety about watching this. I know what happens but I'm not ready for Rob & Trin's reaction.

Adrienne

Deep heavy sigh. My heart started racing as soon as he got in the house dreading the reveal.

Lee

When Doakes said Dexter would hurt Rita and the kids this is what he meant dex is around very dangerous people and it was only a matter of time until someone would find his real identity

Emily Rose

Like everyone else, I've been waiting for this episode. At the end of the day, Dexter is a serial killer and no matter how much he loves his family and feels like he'd never hurt them, he's putting them in danger by involving himself with them & we got to see that here. I didn't love Rita as much as you guys, but I still liked her, and it's a tough scene to watch. For television, it's a GREAT cliffhanger to a season. Season 4 is so amazing. I'm curious what you'll think of the following seasons. I know how ppl feel about season 5; I for one actually quite love season 5

minkit

I feel like this depends on how much pleasure he was taking in this. Rita's death is for a very different purpose than all the other murders he's committed... it'd be kinder to Rita if he didn't tell her, but I can see Arthur taking joy in destroying Dexter's family even more by telling her, even though he didn't even tell Dexter he did that. Edit: Altho now that I've said this, Arthur doesn't actually really know much about Dexter, certainly not all about his extracurricular activities, so he may not have had much TO tell her. At least not like "oh your husband is a serial killer!" thing.

minkit

Arthur's subtle expression when Dexter tells him he has a family is chilling in retrospect.

MKeiran92

I think it's safe to say that in Rita's final moments she learned the ugly truth about her husband. The final horror of that truth coupled with her bleeding out with that monster Arthur is peak Dexter storytelling.

Shaggit

I was shocked by it, but I didn't cry. Never a big fan of Rita. Constant cycle of Dexter never being there, then crisis, then appease her. That's such a good question about Arthur though. I hope he didn't tell her. Better to go not knowing their family was a house of lies.

Octavia

My condolences to Rob for this loss. But history repeating itself was brilliant. Dexter has been a self-indulgent idiot and it came back at him hard.

Octavia

Yeah, this episode is TOUGH. everyone cries at this one. The question I always had, that they never answered was, did Arthur tell Rita about dexter? NO one is safe lol.

Phil Tilly

The shock of just casually killing off a main character at the end of the season is so wild! Still wow'd, after all these years since watching this live

Taryn Clay

Doakes was so very right. (About what he told/predicted of Dexter, when they were in the cabin.)
