FIRST TIME WATCHING: Signs (2002)

Comments

Definitely!

Linda Cannarsa

They would've enjoyed so many other poll movies more.

Octavia

I agree... you don't need faith in god or a higher power to have hope. Not believing in those things doesn't make you lacking or vulnerable or lost. I'm a secular humanist... I have faith in myself.

Octavia

I happened to be taking a drink of water when Trin said, "Is he going to throw him a carrot?" I choked. Almost died.

Thoma

Wow, I just said basically the same things. :)

Korivex

The way I took this movie is that is wasn't about aliens, it was about faith and God. The signs weren't alien signs they were signs from God. God gave the boy asthma so he wouldn't breath in the poison, he made the girl not like the taste of the water and leave it all around the house, the brother... an amazing hitter in baseball, all of these signs... no such thing as coincidences.... it was a spiritual movie and aliens were just the thing used to highlight all the signs, like in TWD how the walkers were the background to the real story.

Korivex

They should watch the whole trilogy! Unbreakable, Split and Glass.

Flopsi80

Love this one, something about it just speaks to me. I'm not even a super religious person, but the growth for Mel Gibson's character as he finally regains his faith made this such a beautiful story. The corn field scene at night scared the hell out of me as a kid. My favorite from Shyamalan (Sixth Sense is a close second).

Joshua Markham

I am calm thank you 😉👍

Ninaofthe90s

Actually, that's a fan theory. Shyamalan never said this.

Keith Duperreault

One of my top movies of all time. I got really excited to see you guys react. But, I think the whole premise of the movie was about having faith, hope and survival. The "aliens" were just a backdrop. Just like The Walking Dead. The zombies become more background than full focus. The focus is on faith, family and surviving.

Cyndi McCoy

This is one of my least liked films by this director. If you are going to make it a point to create films with these huge twists, I'm afraid you are going to have to do better than 'Aliens defeated by beating them to death with a bat and throwing water on them"..... I'm fairly certain any form of life we have here can be defeated by beating it to death with a bat. World's worst invasion force... they spent all this time observing us in order to invade and harvest us, and they missed the fact that 71% of the planet is covered in a liquid that disintegrates them. Idiocracy in space... "Dammit XLIkklixxX, you were supposed do the chemical analysis BEFORE we landed!'

Keith Duperreault

@Michele G Hey, I have an existential question for you & this is totally genuine.. not looking to argue or anything. How would you feel if it was proven that there IS a god, but he's not watching over us either?

k4rizz4

Calm down, Nina lol

k4rizz4

I don’t know I kinda of liked the movie, the children were really good actors they made me emotional quite a few times. I think they left so suddenly because If water is their weakness I don’t think they’d want to stay on a planet where it rains

James

Where's Trin? She died. So casually answers Rob 😅😅💜

Jenny Lee Villanueva

I don’t see any mentions of Unbreakable, it is BY FAR the best by M Night Shyamalan and I don’t think Rob and Trin have seen it yet! Am I missing something?

Linda Cannarsa

I'm sad you guys didn't love it. I imagine if you were expecting a blockbuster alien movie, it could be disappointing. This one uses the alien invasion to grapple with ideas of loss & grief, faith & doubt, love & healing, redemption & rebirth. I can't help crying when I watch this one, but maybe it hits me in a personal kind of way. I would say: 1. Signs 2. The Village 3. The Sixth Sense All amazing movies. Let's do a 'The Village' re-watch with Trin!

Jordan Tanner

Oooooh, good one. ☝️

William

I always felt this was a tad too long because its so slow but the payoff is great 💜

Alyssa Dyson

I definitely understood your Comment. I am definitely a woman who believes in God and has faith that someone is watching over me, which brings me comfort in times when I need it. I don’t go to church or read the Bible I just believe and it does help me. If I was to learn there was no one watching over us, I would be filled with fear and feel hopeless and lost. I think that’s where Graham’s thought process comes from. But for people who don’t believe, like yourself, I can definitely see how you wouldn’t relate to this movie. There’s nothing wrong with that. Everyone has their own ideas and beliefs and it doesn’t mean either side is broken or wrong or lost. I think the above commenter came off as a little combative. Just know we all aren’t like that 💜

Michele G

😂😂 yes !! Right after they think they spot Deanna. That was so funny 😆

Michele G

trlb

I agree this movie is not about me (nobody wants to see that). However, we all come to these with our own personal experiences and points of view. I just feel the themes in this movie play into the idea that there is something wrong with you or there is something missing from your life if you don't have faith. Now maybe this movie isn't saying that but I can't help it if this movie stirs up these feelings for me. I guess in life we all see signs, but the signs I see pointed me in a different direction. That was all I was really trying to say.

Bradley Weeks

I haven't seen this one since I was a kid, I'm actually really hyped to see if THAT scene is still traumatizing to me 😂

roncelune

This is definitely a top 10 for me. Also that kids birthday party scene when you see the alien scarred me for life.. lol joshing but it did scare me when I was a kid 🤣 Its just unsettling.

Peter Ceniceros

Anyone who likes these types of movies really needs to check out Dark Skies... that is a creepy alien movie. Hahaha.

Angelina Sargent

So you don't like it because it doesn't represent you? This movie isn't about you. It's about a man who lost his faith and is broken. He also lost his wife in a terrible accident. For him regaining his faith is what needed to happen. It saved him. That doesn't mean that every person who is an atheist is broken. So you're an atheist who doesn't feel broken or without hope. I'm happy for you but what's that got to do with the movie? Did you lose your wife in an accident or were you a priest before you became an atheist? Did you loose your faith like he did? Because that's what happened to this character, and it makes complete sense that a man like him would feel broken after what happened to him. He was literally a priest, a man of faith who then lost his faith and everything he believed in. Of course he's broken.

Ninaofthe90s

Certainly not all, but some deeply religious people can feel broken by a sudden loss of faith. For some it’s freeing, and for some it’s devastating. Graham was the latter. As a non believer myself, I thought this was a credible depiction of such a scenario for his character.

Jan T

I feel like you guys kind of assume people have like pre knowledge about the crap that's going on. I feel like the wife saying all that stuff in the end was kind of a mix of her brain neurons firing and saying random stuff that ended up being meaningful signs near the end of the movie for Graham.... the whole nothing is a coincidence is kind of what explains the end scene for me.

Angelina Sargent

Haha I came here to say this. I love how soon she came on after Rob that it was Deana on the screen.

Angelina Sargent

That story is soooo insane. I love the what if podcasts episode about it. Hahah granted they are my favorite podcast with all these stuff. Especially the skinwalker ranch episodes. Those boys are hysterical.

Angelina Sargent

In the scene where they are watching the lights on tv. I'm in group 2. I disagree with the idea that if you don't have faith in a higher power you only have fear and not hope. You might still have hope in that situation. I also don't like the fact that this movie treats Graham as broken because he has lost his faith. As an atheist I do not feel broken or without hope. It's an interesting movie, the acting is good, but leaves me feeling unsatisfied in the end.

Bradley Weeks

I think R&T missed the lines towards the end, where they explained the aliens weren’t here to take over the planet. They were here to harvest humans and then leave. The reports also said a lot of people died, but in places they managed to fight and defeat them in a primitive way, the implication being the use of water against the aliens. I sometimes prefer movies where what you don’t see is often scarier than what is shown. But I don’t think this was particularly suitable for a Halloween movie. I had hoped it would have been in SciFi month. But really it’s about faith and family, and I still really like it. Personally I enjoyed it more than The Village.🙂

Jan T

Yeah yall were definitely looking way too deep lol. This is a fantastic movie. All his movies are good but different. So next time you watch one, watch it with new eyes. But basically you’ve already seen all the good ones. I like The Lady in the Water, it’s really cool but a lot of people didn’t like it. It’s very mystical so if ever watch it, try not compare it to his others bc you’ll be disappointed. I love this movie though, it’s not really about aliens, it’s about faith 💜💜

Michele G

This is a great movie and awesome reactions!! this is the type of movie that I don’t mind rewatching a few times or when I can’t find anything cool. 😆 like now that I just started getting a cold! 🤧🤧🤷🏻‍♀️

Nora

You wanna hear a interesting alien story check out “Ariel School UFO incident” from 94 or if you want to be scared for a couple days listen to the Joe Rogan podcast with Bob Lazar #1315

G.C

Love this movie. I wouldn't put it in the horror category however. This is not a movie about aliens. It's a movie about faith and family.

Nabo

Peep young Denise(Tara's Girlfriend) from TWD, she was the pharmacy clerk.

Annie Bonz

Brilliant movie. Brilliant performance by Mel ❤

Ninaofthe90s

Duuuuuuude. This movie slaps. Looking forward to this one.
