FIRST TIME WATCHING: Contact 1997

Comments

I said that loud while watching the video. And I am really bad at geography, but even I know this.

Flopsi80

You guys had mentioned Clinton's speech. That speech was actually him talking about the discovery of 'life' on a rock discovered on Mars by the Pathfinder Rover. And just FYI, Contact is a book by Carl Sagan. :)

Jacob Laughbon

This movie is one of the reasons that I continually defend the theme of The 100's final season... that it wasn't some outrageous turn, but a common sci-fi theme. I can definitely see that it lifted parts of its end directly from Ellie's voyage... just tweaked it. Contact is way more thought-provoking though. Ha... no comparison. Beautiful movie. And William Fichtner (Kent) stole every scene he was in.

Octavia

The opening scene of this movie was honored in the first few minutes of the Loki season 1 finale. Watch the beginning of that episode again, and you'll see the connection. https://www.disneyplus.com/play/335fcc53-6913-4042-bc8b-db6a0e84866f

Have you read it?

Amos T Fairchild

I love this movie because it actually tries to explore what first contact would mean to us fallible human beings. It's also one of the few film adaptations I think is superior to the book it's based on (my other nominees would be The Ring and A Simple Plan). Also, for anyone who's interested: Though it has permeated the popular consciousness, the notion that science and religion are fundamentally opposed has a name -- it's called "conflict theory" and it's not something anyone studying history or anthropology takes at all seriously. Science and religion have worked in tandem throughout human history.

zammmerjammer

Because it would be more nonsensical to disbelieve an entire squad of people saying the same thing.

zammmerjammer

Yep. I wrote the comment because Rob and myself do not live in the US and know better. ;)

This is still one of my favorite movies of all time, because of the spiritual questions it raises and explores. My spirituality has changed throughout my life. I was more like Palmer when I first saw it. These days I'm closer to Ellie. But it also touches on grief a little bit, and that's what hit me during this watchalong. My parents have been dead close to 20 years now, but the moment Ellie meets her "father" really hit me hard. I just thought about what would it be like to see and touch and talk to one of my parents all these years later. Jodie Foster is an amazing actress and McConaughey is great too. I think some people don't take him seriously because of his looks and his thick Texas accent and maybe some of his earlier roles. But, he can play pretty much anything.

Marty McGee

Exactly, the characters are American, so they pronounced it how Americans would pronounce it.

Michael Celia

Yes! And Joanna from Hunger Games.

kimburley

I'm not so sure that they missed that point. There was things that Trin said that sort of pointed him that direction and to me that was kind of the obvious take with the way Matthew was looking at her, to me, it's not something you would have to actually talk about out loud to to know someone understood it

Kim Magee

You might have figured it out by now but the little girl who plays young Ellie, is Jenna Malone, who you just saw in Donnie Darko.

Stephanie Bedworth

Thanks for this reaction! My two cents on the whole "alien" thing: I think it's possible that humanity is the first intelligent life in space (someone has to be the first). Universe is fairly young. In billions of years Universe will be full of life.

Scarlett Monrow

not at all haha πŸ’•

K, cool :) Just didn't want you to think I was b*tching you out. Looking forward to more from you guys.

Korivex

Did not mean you sounded triggered etc, it was a more broad statement overall when we watch stuff raw overall. I did not find your comment bad at all and can appreciate your take πŸ’• luv u 2! Just trying to say that we may miss stuff from time to time.

lol I am not triggered, I love your reactions. I first watched this when it came out and as an Ashiest, at the time, I seen it right away without knowing anything about the movie. It was actually a turning point for me to understand what faith is... it did not convince be to become a believer, that took another 24 years. I was just surprised you guys did not get it because it was so impactful to me. But still luv you guys.

Korivex

When we watch it again with the knowledge we have we will be able to read so much more. Had no clue what this movie was even about so we focused on so many things and yeah, we can miss stuff. Sorry if it is triggering etc but we go into stuff raw and take the criticism when it comes. ❀️ appreciate your opinion and wish we could pick up on everything right away also.

You guys seemed to miss the whole point. Everything she was saying at the hearing was exactly what the father said to her about his experience with God. She understands his faith, it doesn't need to have hard scientific facts to be real. She had no proof but she knew it was real... just like his experience. Science can't prove everything because there are things we experience that can't be explained with 'proof'.

Korivex

OMG The Last Unicorn in your profile pic! It's me and my best friends favorite movie and a Symbol for our friendship.πŸ‘πŸ’•πŸ™

Flopsi80

Yes, I personally remember that speech from Clinton. It was about a rock that originated from Mars and eventually ended up on Earth.

Cindy

We all need to make a pact that if we die we will go and visit. Rob so he can see a ghost

Kim Magee

Correctly... for Americans. Lol.

Amos T Fairchild

So...what happens in Vega, stays in Vega? (Can't believe no one else brought that up lol). Rob: "It's like a James Bond villain lair!" Funnily enough, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico was actually the shooting location of a Bond villain lair in the Pierce Brosnan Bond film Goldeneye. And to answer your question about the President Clinton press conference - it was (controversially) adapted from a real-life press conference where Clinton was discussing the discovery of a Martian meteorite that was initially though to be from "elsewhere."

Michael Celia

As an American, I've only heard primer pronounced "prymer" and thought the word was said weird in this movie. After a little research (because I'm a dork when it comes to these things) there are actually two pronunciations depending on meaning..."primmer" - as said in the movie - usually refers to an introductory book like a school textbook, while "prymer" refers to a first coat as in paint. So in the context of the film, they actually are probably pronouncing it correctly.

Michael Celia

In the book they send multiple people. For some reason they only send one in the movie.

Amos T Fairchild

Oh yeah. Americans can't pronounce primer. lol. ;)

Amos T Fairchild

Always πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

Marisol Ferreira SimΓ΅es

P.S. And Rob's accurate guess that it should be a more rounded group not just a person going is true, in the book it, by the great Carl Sagan, it was a group of people.

Marisol Ferreira SimΓ΅es

I feel more connected these days. We can video chat with family across the world. It's great.

Amos T Fairchild

Jodie Foster is always amazing

Kim Magee

I looooove this movie. Even though I personally believe the book is better, because it explores the discussion about faith and fact in a deeper way and at the end both characters have to live with an understanding of faith and fact in a transformative manner. Nonetheless the movie did it justice, and Jodie Foster is fantastic. So happy I'm about to rewatch it with you both!

This movie is based on the only novel written by astronomer, planetary scientist, and beloved science communicator Carl Sagan. Sagan was highly involved in the creation of the Pioneer Plaque and the gold records placed on the Voyager spacecrafts launched in the 1970s. The records contained information about Earth and humanity that could hopefully be deciphered by other intelligent life in the cosmos. He wrote many popular science books, was highly influential in the promotion of SETI, and received honours from NASA, and the National Academy of Sciences. His groundbreaking tv series Cosmos was the most widely watched series in the history of American public television, and was seen in 60 countries around the world. Contact is a science fiction film in the truest sense of the term. Lovely to see it included this month. Thanks to Rob and Trin.

Jan T

I do love me some. Matthew McConaughey LOL and Jodie Foster is one of my favourite actresses so yay!

Kim Magee

It's in the US state of New Mexico not Mexico

HeauxHalter

Time to get comfy and enjoy this one!
