FIRST TIME WATCHING: Donnie Darko

Comments

I would have never finished this movie if I wasn't watching along with you to be honest.

Kamanda Hickey

Thanks for doing this random reaction, I love this movie and it was so nice to experience it again along with you guys :)

Harold Wright

Of course he was. He had a superpower for a while and he used it to save them all. So he was a superhero. 🖤

Flopsi80

I watched your reaction now, it's really great! ❤ I just was surprised that you weren't really emotional at the end. I am crying every time I watch this.😭 My hero Donnie saved them all. 🙏 DD is one of my favorite movies. 💕 Here I found some great explanation for the theory behind it: https://wakeupdonnie.fandom.com/wiki/Tangent_Universe 🤓

Donnie saved the world. ❤ Here is a great explanation: https://wakeupdonnie.fandom.com/wiki/Tangent_Universe

Now that you’re on a Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman kick, you’ve GOT to watch Prisoners. Also, I’m dying for you guys to watch Signs next month for spooky season.

Jordan Tanner

My birthdays October 25 , when’s yours Rob

Lee Shafer

If you're in El Paso she doesn't know you

Mitch

There is a really great podcast that has a whole episode dedicated to this movie and the music used. They talk with the director. It’s called “Needle on the Record.” Here is a link to the YouTube video of the episode. I really enjoyed it - hope y’all do too! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fpcz9xdYtS4 (This is NOT a spam link and I have no affiliation with this podcast - I’m just a fan of goood music in good movies. ❤️) If you prefer to Google it yourself it’s the “MUBi podcast” season 3 episode 2 called “Donnie Darko - Richard Kelly makes the ultimate ‘80s mixtape.”

Beware The Jabberwock

To this day the whole scene set to “Head over Heels” with the speed up/slow downs is one of my favorites. It’s just oddly perfect with the music and scenes combo. This movie has an AMAZING soundtrack. 🎶🎧

Beware The Jabberwock

I'm really glad you guys watched the Directors Cut, because the bits from Grandma Death/Roberta Sparrows book help explain what is happening and they weren't in the theatrical cut. They all remember the "tangent world" that comes into existence when Donnie doesn't die, but to everyone it's all a dream.

Grif Kane

One of my favorite movies!! Thanks for this reaction

Andromayde

well that movie was....interesting lol, not sure what to make of that lol

AlexH88

Absolutely LOVE this. I never knew I wanted this reaction until it happen. *Happy noises*

Grif Kane

Gretchen was played by the same actress who played Johanna in hunger games!!!

AlexH88

I love that actress

James

"Herbally enhanced". Greatest formulation for this I ever heard! 😁👍❤

Flopsi80

Why not? I am herbally enhanced right now. Should be fun! Lol

Jessi

Wow I honestly couldn’t imagine the movie not having those quotes it added a lot to the mystery and tension

James

Yes! I will have such a great friday evening with this. 😍❤

Flopsi80

So glad I kept being persistent... one of the two best - probably the best Donnie Darko reaction I've seen (=all that exist). ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Anatol

Frank was his sister's boyfriend. That's why she was looking for him during the (tangent world) Halloween party... but he'd gone on a beer run. Ghost / Manipulated dead Frank is making sure Donnie chooses the right thing by going back to willingly sacrifice himself. Gretchen's death ensures that he does. World reset. Then Frank never gets shot thru the eye, Gretchen never meets Donnie and dies, Donnie's mom & little sister are saved (Patrick Swayze isn't found out, so Donnie's mom wouldn't have had to sub on the trip, nor take the early flight back), and the world doesn't implode. Thanks, Donnie.

Octavia

I haven't seen this one since it came out but the only thing I remember is the Gyllenhaal kids (at the time) and that it had a fantastic OST, maybe with addition of Mad World. We'll see!

Marisol Ferreira Simões

Yeah, they watched the director's cut version. I should've realized right away with the opening song change. If it's not Echo & The Bunnymen, it's not the theatrical version.

Octavia

This appears to be the director's cut version... that goes deeper... and expands more based on Grandma Death's in-universe book, The Philosophy of Time Travel. The theatrical version is more trippy, open to interpretation.

Octavia

So they need to see Evil Dead right?

Mitch

I think most go with it being real... but another theory is that it was all in his mind, delusions, audio/visual hallucinations, a fever dream. (Perhaps before ending it all himself.) It's a deeper movie because it makes you wonder in various ways. Because it's both too real & surreal. This was actually the director's cut that explains a lot more based on Grandma Death's in-universe book, The Philosophy of Time Travel. The original version doesn't have all those book chapter explanations... so it's much more open to interpretation.

Octavia

Was this one of my Ambien dreams?

Anthony Ancona

"Donnie Darko? Sounds like a superhero." "How do you know I'm not?" 😁 The director/writer said in the commentary that he actually is.

Thadman

Fantastic way to kick off this sci-fi month! I love this trippy, thought provoking, exploration of time & space.

CheshireKat528

Great reaction, really fun to watch Rob's face throughout and Trin has Donnie Darko powers; She has seen this all before and she will see it again. This is why I miss indie films from the 90s and early 00s, they made giant swings. This is such a high concept idea in a really trippy John Hughes-ian package and for my money it is perfect. Seeing this when it came out was a singular experience which can;t be said about a lot of stuff over the last 25 years. I really hope one of the residual memories is that Swayze's character is a pedo and he still gets dealt with. Great cast and a great film.

James W.

Wow this was a really good movie I loved the story and the acting. I swear to god giant fucking bunny suits are the scariest shit imaginable. It was both terrifying and captivating, also time travel doesn’t always have to be pre determined that’s just one of a few theory’s. I was kind of expecting it to turn out that everything was somehow in his head, like schizophrenia or something that would’ve been really cool but this was also really good

James

Gary Jules' version of 'Mad World' is so hauntingly, poetically perfect... forever entwined with Donnie Darko. I can't think of one without the other.

Octavia

I'm not afraid anymore!

Mombi

It's funny Trin mentioned the opening song as soon as it started because that's not the original song from the theatrical release, and I realized it as soon as it started as well. The original is "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen.

Farva

This came out a month or 2 after 9/11, this falls into the years of my life I was "out of order , out of my mind , ya know crazy" I didn't watch a lot of movies. I'm excited to finally watch this and with y'all!

Annie Bonz

oh lets goooooo, my voted movie

Phil Tilly

Over 20 years since I've seen this so probably most of it won't remember hehe

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion
