FIRST TIME WATCHING Black Widow (2021)

Comments

Iirc you guys don't do alot of investigating of the outside influences of shows/movies you watch so that it doesn't influence your opinions of the content (if not, just ignore me haha!) but if you are interested...! A large reason this movie wasn't created earlier in the lineup at the peak of Nat's popularity, is because of Marvel's past CEO Ike Perlmutter and his disbelief that a female-led superhero movie could perform well at the box office. Black Widow, Captain Marvel and also Black Panther were already in talks in the earlier phases by others at Marvel (notably the guy who mostly runs the show now, Kevin Feige), but both came much later as a result of Ike's gross prejudice. Ike had also made a comment about not being able to tell the difference between Rhodey's original actor VS Don Cheadle, so, pretty despicable dude all around. I wish this movie would've gotten the writing team and care it deserved, as someone who wanted a BW movie since I saw the OG Avengers in the cinema as a young girl, but I'm glad we at least got a parting gift with some brilliant new additions in Florence Pugh and Dave Harbour!

And it’s a move they ripped off from Bucky in CA:WS. In my headcanon it’s a move that Winter Soldier taught the young Widows when he was their trainer.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

It's Arya from Game of Thrones that drops the knife and catches it.

I REALLY like the opening of this movie, but honestly I was pretty disappointed by the rest. Can you imagine how lame it would be if Bucky's brainwashing was reversed by a conveniently packaged antidote? It just rubbed me the wrong way how they reduced Nat's backstory with this chemical subjugation stuff and loads of awkward humor. Loved Yelena and Alexei though. Glad Nat finally got her own solo movie but it felt like a very formulaic spy movie.

I love Yelena 💜 she made this movie good for me. Kinda sucks black widow got her own solo film after she died and just to introduce Yelena into the MCU though.

Alyssa Dyson

I agree. Most of the Marvel characters have had some form of backstory and we only had glimpses of Black Widow's story. Even though we already knew her eventual fate, her backstory created humanity to her life. Giving us Yelena as an extension of Natasha was a wonderful and welcome addition to Marvel.

Cindy

When I wrote I was excited for you to watch Black Widow I indicated you would recognize one of the actors. Right on cue, Rob said it's Hopper! That is why I love your channel so much. You both know your stuff and you don't miss anything. If Trin misses something, Rob picks it up and if Rob misses something, Trin doesn't. You two are the perfect combo

Cindy

I love what Florence Pugh brings to Yelena's character - she's so much fun and she became an instant favorite for me. I enjoy reading through the comment sections here - everyone seems so happy to be here.

Great reaction, guys! Thank you very much! Also... I hope you can fit watching all of the What If...? Marvel cartoon in November, so that you can watch all of Hawkeye in December, given that Hawkeye is set during Christmastime. You guys are right on time if you can watch What If... a little faster, and before December. And Hawkeye is a phenomenal show. It's actually my favorite of all the Marvel shows. I've always absolutely loved Hawkeye (Clint Barton) as a character throughout all of Marvel as a whole, and a lot of this is because I absolutely love Jeremy Renner as an actor and human being. But I've always just really loved this character so much ever since the early cartoons with him in them too. Thank you, Rob and Trin! Your reaction to Black Widow is great, and I really enjoy this movie! :) Sincerely, Heidi

The Americans is awesome! Highly underrated

You know what, I really like you! 😄 No, seriously, your comments are always a pleasure for me to read 👍 I felt the same way about Hawkeye before watching tv-show too.

Dude

I enjoy this movie more & more, every time I rewatch it. Particularly Yelena and all the 'family' dynamics. Pulls off wonderfully deadpan humor and heartfelt pathos.

Octavia

I think one detail that's cool is that when Nat appears in Infinity War, she's wearing the vest with all the pockets. You don't know the significance of that until you see Black Widow.

AZalan

. I’ve never watched this far into the MCU I’m happy to watch this with you guys for the first time. I’m really hoping we see Yelana again she’s one of my favorite characters already

James

This is my first time rewatching this movie since I watched it for the first time back in March. I liked it then, but it was so much more fun on a rewatch. I love Natasha's relationship with Yelena and getting to learn more about her history. This movie pretty much takes place in between Civil War and Infinity War and sure, outside of the post-credit scene, you COULD have watched this in chronological order following that movie and I'm sure people have and enjoyed it that way. But personally, the majority of the emotional weight I felt from the movie was because we KNOW Natasha's fate. It's messed up, but I appreciate the sadness of the movie finally exploring Natasha's past having her reunite with her family (makeshift as it was) and free herself and other women from Dreykov and the Red Room (something she's carried with her for years and her motivation to join SHEILD and then the Avengers was to try and make up for all she's went through), getting some happiness and optimism, ready to go back to her new family with the Avengers, only for her to end up giving her life down the line to help save the world. In a way it was giving us closure so we know that when she went, it wasn't with unresolved trauma and unfulfilled wishes. This story is so tragic to me and I love how even Taskmaster was just another example of how Dreykov has hurt these women. This movie was about their liberation and freedom and that was so important to Natasha, it makes me love and miss her even more than I did before we got to spend so time with her. David Harbour as The Red Guardian is hilarious to me (his continued insistence on being an adversary of Captain America even though Steve was in the ice for years and never met him) and I loved Florence Pugh as Yelena and I'm still excited to see more of her. Hawkeye the show was such an unexpected pleasure for me! I was one of those people who didn't care much for Clint either way, but watching that show changed everything to me and I enjoyed every second, so don't worry, whatever you think is gonna happen, you'll be surprised and enjoy yourself! Can't wait for you to get to it.

sierra's reaction corner

Yeah, this movie chronologically takes place after Captain America: Civil War, but the post-credits scene would have been a MAJOR spoiler had you watched it then. BTW, the opening sequence reminds me of the great TV series The Americans - highly recommend it if you haven't had a chance to see it.

Michael Celia

That's exactly what happened to me! They seriously have the BEST patreon!!!!
