Diaries were once a thing

oooh that one is a good one! Intense but it's a quality film.

YES, The Prestige! Been waiting for this one ha. I love you two and this was so fun! This was such a treat that you guys decided to pick this film bc I know it wasn't winning in the polls but I was so rooting for it, so yay I'm so glad this one got chosen! There's so much in this film to return to after an initial watch. This is definitely a bit of a self-indulgent film that speaks to filmmakers because it's so meta ha! Because the art of cinema itself was created by both scientists such as Edison and illusionists such as Georges Méliès, so a lot of the ideas in The Prestige about magic are really ideas about the art of storytelling through filmmaking itself. There were illusionists who used the concepts of magic they already knew to create a new way of doing magic: creating moving pictures that fool audiences into thinking something is real that isn't real. It's no wonder we call a lot of the tips & tricks of the cinema trade "movie magic"...a lot of the actual tips & tricks came from magicians. The 3 ACTS of a magic show which Nolan plays up a lot in this movie are essentially the same as the 3 ACTS of a typical feature film or general narrative story. Nolan as a filmmaker is really a magician, doing the same things our main characters are doing in the film in terms of structuring a deceit that the audience is paying to see, paying to be fooled. You weren't fooled by the story like you caught on to how Borden was using a double..er brother. But that's not what Nolan as a filmmaker was intending to be the thing that fools you. What all of us get fooled by and what we want to be fooled by / suspend our disbelief over are the actual magic tricks of filmmaking...things that play into the science & psychology of our brains that, for example, trick our brains into thinking we are hearing someone walk on snow but it's actually the sound of a bag of corn starch being squished, recorded in a foley studio. Or tricking our brains into thinking we just saw a character outside a building walk into that same building when really what we saw are two separate locations miles apart, maybe even in different countries, shot on different days, but it was edited in such a way that tricks our brains into thinking it's all the same place at the same time. It's that movie magic (which includes a lot of science behind it all) that enables us to be caught up in a story. We do want to be fooled by that magic, which is what Cutter says, "You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled." Every filmmaker knows the audience wants to be fooled. The audience doesn't want to be reminded they're watching a movie; they want to be caught up in it so much that they suspend their disbelief. Filmmakers work hard to trick us all in the ways we want to be tricked. Angier at the end explains it's why he does what he does: the look on the audience's faces when they suspend their disbelief and get caught up in the magic. Many filmmakers also do what they do to give that magic and feeling of wonder to audiences. But just as Borden and Angier go to great and destructive lengths to create the best magic show possible, a lot of filmmakers & people in the industry engage in this type of self-destructive, obsessive, and competitive behavior as they strive to create great cinema. In the process of pushing themselves to create great cinema, they hurt a lot of people, including themselves and family. And abuse is common. They fool themselves into thinking it's all worth it...but it's often not. Experiencing the art of cinema can be magical, but the cost of creating it sometimes is too much when there's an obsessiveness and workaholic mentality in the lifestyle, which enables a lot of different injustices to flourish. There's a lot to dig into with the themes in The Prestigel. It's a quality film and it was so fun re-watching it with you both! ALSO, that comment about Scarlett Johansson being like a modern day Marilyn Monroe: yes! I totally see that and that made me happy. Love both. Marilyn Monroe is such a legend and I esp relate with her bc she had Endometriosis which I have suspected Endo. Scarlett Johansson is her own modern day legend and I can see a little bit of Marilyn Monroe in her. Anyway, great reaction to a great film!

Yes I love this show, so underrated!

ln_wanderbooks

Probably been recommended before but you guys should really watch Prisoners with hugh jackman and jake gyllenhaal. One of the best movies within the past twenty years.

Ty linn

Christopher Nolan's brother, Jonathan Nolan, co-wrote all of the movies with him. Jonathan Nolan created the tv series, Person of Interest and Westworld. One day I would love for you guys to react to Person of Interest. There's plenty of time to watch everything... just keep reacting for at least a decade. ;-D

Octavia

Fantastic movie. It's been a few years since I've watched it now, but it gets more and more impressive each watch. Good job figuring it out so soon!

Gilstead

As a Coloradan myself, I forgot about Tesla's time here. So fun that they included that in the film

Maggie Barbour

My all time favourite movie ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Each rewatch is more and more enjoyable

Gabriel

Really great to rewatch. And now I can tell which twin is doing what. I'd say that Freddy tied the 'wrong' knot. And Al went to the funeral, more genuinely contrite and not knowing which knot it was. But knowing his brother's more relentless nature, he probably did know. (In the book, they were Albert and Frederick -- together they are 'Alfred'.)

Hate and love 😅💜

I think Angier is a duplicate in the end. The original Angier died in the first performance when he showed his trick to the head of the theater. He shot the first duplicate. After that, he had to sacrifice himself in the tank so that his duplicate could appear in the stands. And from then on it was always a duplicate.

Nadine 🇨🇭

i hate how good you guys are at guessing twists lmao

Just wanted to say Rob and Trin thank you for the reacts. You know I adore you both 💓 I shared some time ago that our reacts family was growing and that a new baby would be joining us in November but sadly God had other plans and took my little loves life too soon. There was no heartbeat on my scan this week so that's my mum journey over. I appreciate every upload edit and reaction from you guys and use are the perfect duo to get me over this. I'm re watching walking dead season 1 react and wow, look how far you've grew your patreon since then 🥰 I'm so proud of you both! Thank you for the distractions and the laughs and the tears. You can't please everyone but I've never seen a bad reaction. Keep smashing this!!

Love this movie!. "Nolan's not really known for his mystique" - ah this gives me the sad feels. This and Memento are my fave Nolan films. I'm not as into the big actiony spectacle stuff he tends to do now, I can accept as movies they are top tier, but his earlier stuff really had this cool kinda lower key, interesting intrigue narrative story telling first and foremost. Memento is unlikely to ever get voted for being much lower budget, more cult classic, and one of his earliest films, but if you ever fancied another Nolan film that is 'about the mystique' and not actiony I'd definitely recommend to watch some day.

lemmy

Top 3 Nolan films for me are currently: Inception, The Prestige, The Dark Knight..I've watched Inception and The Prestige probably too many times, but what's one more time..

Superpotroast

Love this reaction!! Robert (and I do mean Angier and Rob :D) wanting and waiting to see Borden's trick, when in fact, it was being revealed in every scene in front of our very own eyes, from start to finish, is the best way to showcase the allegory of this film. The Pledge, The Turn, The Prestige, and how each stage was represented with every time jump and cut. Angier goes from not wanting to hurt the bird to killing all his duplicates. Passion for the craft, creativity, obsession, and sacrifice. Where is the line? What is the end goal? Definitely in the top 2 best Nolan films. I love the setting and use of magic and time. The storytelling and dialogue are amazing and there is actually ambiguity and depth to the characters. Also Hugh Jackman is a force :D

Christine

Interstellar number one?

Schmaster

I guess I'm rewatching for the 2930th time Nolan's second best movie.

Angel Eyes

According to IMDB the editing of this movie has 146 TIME jump cuts - either backwards or forwards. Which averages out to almost one jump per film minute. Nolan LOVES playing with time. 😉

Oh man! I Just started and I totally forgot that one of the settings is Colorado Springs! That's my hometown. I was born and raised there. It's funny to see it depicted in this movie. It's shown as a small wild west type town. Which at the turn of the 20th century maybe it was, but now it's almost a million people so it was interesting to see that depiction. And of course I totally forgot that Tesla did some research there! Pretty cool to see a place you know very well depicted in movies. And it's actually interesting to note that Tesla actually was in Colorado Springs in 1899-1904 I think? Doing experiments! Fascinating stuff.

Landon DuVall

Nolan casting Bowie as Tesla was BEAUTIFUL! 🥹❤️ This cast was AMAZING! 🤩

Beware The Jabberwock

Nice surprise! This is my second favorite Nolan film after Memento.
