FIRST TIME WATCHING I Am Legend (2007) Reaction!

Comments

I'm surprised your patrons recommended this to you guys considering how vocal you've both been with your feelings toward dogs and your opinion on the death of dogs as a plot device. A rare miss from a poll IMO. Maybe I'm biased because I also didn't love this movie when I saw it in the theater. I don't know if it was the acting or directing or what but it wasn't compelling or moving and even though the stakes were high, it didn't even put me on edge like it should have. The darkseekers were creepy as hell though.

Ellen Noir

Will Smith’s “I Am Legend” (2007) was the third movie ostensibly based on Richard Matheson’s novel of the same name. "The Last Man On Earth" (1964) was the best and most faithful adaptation of the "I Am Legend" book. I don't get Richard Matheson's problems with it as he was one of the SCREENWRITERS on the damn thing. "The Omega Man" (1971) starring Charlton Heston was a remake / reimagining of "Last Man On Earth", not the source material. And likewise, "I Am Legend" (2007) was a remake / reimagining of "The Omega Man", again, not the source material. With each successive movie it got further and further away from the book. For instance, Robert Neville is not a Doctor, military or otherwise, in the book. He’s just an ordinary guy. In “Last Man on Earth” the protagonist is Dr. Robert Morgan, a civilian biochemist. In both “Omega Man” and “I Am Legend”, the protagonist is a military Doctor. You might try watching “Omega Man” and “Last Man on Earth” (in that order) to see how each movie drew on the previous movie’s scenes. The one that will stand out is in “Omega Man” Neville (a completely different character from “Last Man”) is sitting in a movie theater watching “Woodstock” and reciting the dialogue on the screen – and then in “Legend” Neville is reciting the dialogue along with “Shrek” playing on a video in his house. It’s as though the writers said, “Hey, that’s cool! We’ll put something like that in our movie.” The most striking difference between the movies is WHY the protagonist is called, or referred as, a “Legend”. I won’t outline them here to avoid spoilers for those who wish to read the book or watch the other movies. The alternate ending for "I Am Legend" is closer to the book's ending than the theatrical version or the "Omega Man" adaptation. The only movie that adheres to the book's ending is "Last Man on Earth". And now they’re making a sequel. *Groan*

Same. Not my favorite. I'll watch along, but so much of it doesn't even make sense. This is an okay movie, but doesn't feel like a "classic" or a much loved movie.

Terri

I agree. I avoid animal deaths at all costs. Watching badd medicine react to planet of the apes at the minute. And the way my heart hurts for those CGI monkeys isn't normal 😅

Shelley

Having read the book, I knew that action scenes would have to be added because there wasn't that much in the book. Unfortunately I did not like the adaptation. If I had never read the book, I probably would have loved the movie.

Piper

Yes, that’s why I love me some Will Smith. He’s such a goated dad for having his real kids in big films like those!!!

Anaya Imari

Not sure if I voted for this, I think I did, then, changed my mind a few times, don't kill animals in films ffs! It's a quick easy emotional moment but we don't want it, grrr lol

Kim Magee

We just watched the Puss in Boots film and it hinted out of possible new Shrek movie

Kim Magee

Will Smith tends to have his kids acting with him in movies. In this movie Marley is his real daughter (Willow Smith). And in The Pursuit of Happyness his son in that movie is his real son (Jaden Smith).

Anika

The movie I was least excited for this month. Not because its bad, but because it had the potential to be so much better than it was, so it is disappointing for it to be as it is. That said, still a slightly less typical take on a zombie-type movie, so still a fun watch overall. I do totally agree with you about the dog dying trope. I despise it. And here's the thing, I am someone who LOVES bad/sad endings for movies/shows, I think there aren't nearly enough of them and writers/directors are way too afraid of not giving the audience a happy or bittersweet ending. But killing dogs, like you said, is just a really cheap way to make people feel sad. Same for any pet, honestly. If a movie/show is going to have a pet dying in it, it damn well needs to earn it, because its such a played out and shitty trope that you HAVE to make it worth it if you're going to put it in your movie/show.

Uga Engelhart

I think we should watch more Will Smith movies. Maybe start with Men in Black?

Anika

Ok cool . I didn’t know if I missed it

Dawn

Nah we do them in order so it is up next week <3

World Z have we watched this one ?

Dawn

Imo runtime for this movie is too short for proper character development. I like that there are no typical Zombies in it, but most lovable character was Sam and ending didn't hit much because there was nothing in other characters for me to grab. I think this is that case, when you have to read book for proper understanding of movie.

Count Monte-Cristo

So the original ending (which is available with thr home release not the theatrical cut) follows the book better. He was the monster to the "monsters" a boogeyman who kidnapped them in the day and killed them. You were on the right track of the main male infected being intelligent and wanting the woman back. The ending confirms that's what he wanted. The doctor is trying to cure people who don't want a cure and are their own society now is slowly forming from 0 again like humans did millions of years ago.

PKKite

Yeah Rob and Trin. No need for a next poll you guys should just react to the shrek films. Has my vote anyway 🙋🏾‍♀️

Shelley

The whole time you guys were talking about the doggo im just over here like...👀😭😢

Alyssa Dyson

The film is wildly different to the book, but I love both for differenmt reasons - It makes me so happy to see others (including yourselves) enjoy the film for what it is because despite the cinematic version changing so much of what makes the book great, the film is honestly such good fun! I'll keep this spoiler free, but the way the book has Mr Neville handle lonliness, and ESPECIALLY the type of monsters we're dealing with makes the book a lot darker in my opinion. "Come out, Neville" bleh! Shivers everytime

Zebraa

If you're interested, the alternate "ending" (still missing some parts to be considered a proper ending imo) is only four minutes long on YouTube, and it provides answers to some questions you were asking yourself. And since they are making the sequel based on that ending it could be interesting I don't know. And will you do an animation poll one day ? Because now I'm pretty sure Shrek 2 is winning, one of the best sequels ever 😂

roncelune

btw you should react to the alternative ending because their is a I am legend 2 coming out

Ryan

Your reaction had me crying along with you. So sad! I really love this movie and am glad you enjoyed it. As far as I know the woman was the daughter or wife or that infected dude who came after Will Smiths character. She was really important to him so he came after him. I always think it's funny that Will Smith says that this means the social deevolution is complete and there's no trace of human behaviour left, while it actually shows the exact opposite. A man who comes to safe someone he loves, even if it could mean death for him.

Michelle Schaefer

Sorry all I got out of this is that you haven’t seen shrek 2 lol it’s awesome lol

Richard Colligan

Why strangle Sam when he’s working on a cure? Why end it right there and then? I mean, what’s the point? He never gave up on the woman he took hostage but strangled a dog. WTF Neville? Also, has he not thought that there is always a chance that Sam could get infected eventually during one of their daily strolls? He knew Sam is immune to the airborne strain but could still get infected when bitten. He should have injected Sam with his serum BEFORE and not only after AFTER or when bitten. He never puts Sam on a leash either or has her wear some sort of protection. Neville’s just an irresponsible owner. LOL. I’m saying this because the book is very different. The Anna and Ethan characters are also weak in the movie. Yeah, let’s replace the dog with a mother-and-son duo to continue on with the story lol. The book version of Anna is totally different. I don’t even remember if there was a kid in the book. Yeah, this movie was unfortunately mehh for me. Did not vote during the poll. It’s very Hollywood. It’s more about Will Smith than the actual story. A combination of good marketing, a famous actor, and a memorable title made this popular. But the execution was just...weird. They should have just stayed true to the book because it was really refreshing. The story (book) is really strong and ahead of its time. They could also expand on the story. There is indeed an alternative ending, one that is more attuned to what happened in the book. But, I think that one did not do well with the test audience, so it was replaced with this more “heroic” version. Shame. That one was far more interesting but to make it convincing, they have to redo the whole movie. This is a rant. So sorry. I still enjoyed your reactions, though :) But I had to stop midway and just couldn’t finish the rest of the movie. LOL. Still hoping Minority Report gets another chance (but it probably won't).

Christine

Well didn't think I'd ever watch it again either, but just did, but that the LAST time

Kim Magee

Vermont's a state in the Northeast US it's above Massachusetts and squished between New Hampshire and New York

HeauxHalter

That was his real daughter 🙂. Its crazy that just last week they announced a sequel in the works lol. There was an alternate ending so you guys need to watch that

james moore

Yall haven't seen Shrek 2 that is heresy lol you needa get on that and react to one of the greatest sequels ever

Josh B.

I was never able to get used to the "zombievamps" in this film..too fast and too smart! Fun fact: His daughter marley in the film was played by his real life daughter willow smith.

Tarabee

I didn't vote for this, so don't blame me. lol No, really, tho. This movie is not my favorite of Will Smith's, but his acting abilities shone bright in this one. I saw this movie only once before, and like it for it's apocalyptic environment, because I love me some of that. You guys were so upset about Sam's death that you didn't even notice (or didn't care) that Robert was out after dark. Understandable.

angie808

Great movie all these years later, dog scene makes me cry everytime

Fresh2000

Guys! This ending is no longer canon. There is an alternate ending which is better IMO that they are going to use for the sequel.

Racanelli

Not a bad movie, just kind of mediocre. 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Lacks a bit of logic. The dog is the best part. But that's the thing with the Patreon polls, it's more of a "popular" vote. There were brilliant movies on the polls (not necessarily to me, but with over 90% RT score) that rather won't be picked because they aren't popular enough. And that's also understandable, as is the point of Patreon, you want to watch what the majority of your patreons would like you to see. Great reaction as always!

Chris B

Tell that to the walking dead lol.

RuinFox

Will Smith actually loved the dog who played Sam so much, he tried to adopt her. He offered the trainer a lot of money to adopt her, but was told no.

Michael Brown

Cars running 3 years after apocalypse is impossible. Unless they are electric. Gasoline will begin to lose potency within 3-4 months, in a year - it's useless.

Scarlett Monrow

Logic doesn't work in this movie. There are two endings and both don't make sense. Either the turned are like animals, in which case they won't be able to tame and use dogs and set up elaborate traps. If they are in fact like different kind of people, capable of reason and self control (as it shows in alternative ending), then why do they act like mindless animals most of the time? So, fun watch as long as you don't think too hard about it.

Scarlett Monrow

I can’t wait to watch this with you guys! I’ve seen this movie probably 100 times or more. One of my all time favorite movies!

Michael Brown

The book of this movie is one of the best books ever written. I recommend to any book readers, and it’s a short read at around 150 pages
