I think it's worth pointing out how Dave Erikson (the co-creator and showrunner of seasons 1-3) most likely created the characters of Travis and Chris as an inverse/antithesis of or even a more pessimistic response to Rick and Carl. With them you have a father who is strong, adapted quickly and well to the new world as an example for his son who also learned, at a healthy pace and with a group who became his family. Carl also got to say goodbye to his mother which I think is a key turning point with his character becoming who he is now. Whereas Chris didn't get to say goodbye, Travis fulfilling Liza's request confused Chris about the right and wrongs of the new world, he didn't feel like he belonged since he was stuck on a boat with almost an entire company of people who either didn't want to or didn't know how to talk to him. He now had a father who was slow to the update on how the world is now, who couldn't and didn't want to let go of how things were until it was too late. Travis unintentionally failed his son the exact same way both the comic and tv versions of Rick always feared they would. Yes he's an annoying burden who is easy to hate and clearly written to be hated, but Erikson was clearly trying to present a situation too dour for even Kirkman (the series creator) to have written or even consider.
