Rob, it's worth looking back on the cabin scene one more time. The few frames after Ben gets thrust against the cabin wall...

Even in re-watches, it always seemed to me that the writers were making Jack randomly mysterious and secretive in these two episodes to prolong the suspense regarding Juliet (though there is definitely still some truth to that).
But I think there is at least some logic to what Jack is doing beyond keeping things secret just for dramatic purposes. Till recently, it had never occurred to me to take seriously the fact that Jack and Juliet were missing earlier in the day and they only returned in the middle of the meeting. What were they doing? I think right after Kate spilt the beans, they went to the medical hatch to get Ben's reply. But Locke had intervened and stolen the tape. So they came back empty-handed and found Sawyer playing the recording.
As Juliet said (and Rob guessed), she told Jack what Ben was up to after leaving the tape informing Ben about Sun's pregnancy. My theory is that Jack planned to retrieve the tape with Ben's reply, call a meeting of the survivors (like the one they had in this episode anyway), play the recording of Ben's plan of action in his own voice to earn the group's trust and use the knowledge of the specifics of Ben's plan to their advantage (I am assuming Juliet didn't know the when, how etc...... otherwise why would Ben bother replying anyway?).
I think this was what Jack had decided to do even before the Kate confronted him. It does kind of makes sense .... people would respond much better to Juliet giving useful and tangible information, rather than her just claiming to be on their side. It's just that he didn't account for somebody from a freighter 80 miles away crashing on the island and making things much tenser, and Locke secretly trying to help. Even if you disagree with Jack not telling Kate in the previous episode, when he said "not yet" he had a specific endpoint in mind (after recovering the recording in a few hours time) and was not just merely delaying things for absolutely no reason imo.
