Update : What I am working on.

It's been a while since I've done an update. I also haven't been able to spend a lot of time on KayKit related things as I've been quite busy with a few client projects, now that I've got a bit more time coming up I figured it would be good to update you with everything that I'm currently working on and that you can expect in the future.

The Environment pack

The Environment pack is still being worked on, and will be the next pack I release. I still have a lot of assets to make for this, as well as figure out a few different base types (hex is not the only shape I want to include here) and a way to make rivers/water/coasts look nice. 

There will be a Patreon Bonus for this pack, being a set of snow tiles and snow biome versions of the trees/buildings etc.

I have no planned release date for this at the moment, but I'm actively working on the pack. Keep an eye on my Twitter for updates.


Unity Sample Scenes

I've gotten a lot of feedback from people that are having trouble making the assets look nice in their projects, especially within Unity. So going forward I'd like to be able to include some Unity sample scenes for each new asset pack, those scenes will have the lighting and materials already setup.

I don't have a lot of experience with Unity and this will take me a bit to get looking good, so I'm not sure if this will be ready with the Environment pack release but I'm doing my best. The Unity sample scenes will be a Patreon Bonus.


Facial Expressions

Facial expressions! Working on adding some blend shapes for facial expressions and potentially lip-syncing poses. This will be a separate pack (free) with a variety of heads and accessories you can put on the existing characters.

 The blend shapes carry over into Unity and Godot without any effort, so you can just adjust sliders in the inspector to get different faces. Haven't tested in Unreal engine yet, but I'm assuming this would be simple also.


Full Body Character models 

Another highly requested addition is full body character models. The original character style was made because I wanted to include some type of character with all the assets, but not spend hours and hours on every single model due to rigging/painting etc. 

I understand these don't work well for every type of game and there's a definite need for a full humanoid type character. The original style will definitely stay, but I am looking to add a second type of character to the lineup in the future. These will be highly stylised characters and still fit with the 'toy' vibe of the rest of the assets. 

Making these is very time-consuming and while there will definitely be a free character, there will also be either a paid or patreon exclusive version with more options/accessories etc.


Blender Procedural Materials

Something completely different and not really related to game assets. I've been experimenting with making procedural materials for Blender, these will be free to everyone and I'll most likely set up a gumroad link for these at some point soon. I'm not sure if there's much interest in blender related content, but the KenShape render file I uploaded a few months ago was pretty well received. 

The materials themselves are all very experimental and most of them don't really have a purpose, they just look cool. There's a ton of standard wood/metal/plastic materials already out there so these are just some funky materials I thought looked cool and so I'm giving them away for free.

Besides the above I've also got some other stuff in the works, including adding new character animations to the animation pack, setting up a new poll for the next free asset pack and:

Mystery Character of the Month Club - Landing page

I understand it's becoming a bit of a hassle to scroll through the Patreon posts to find all the MCOTMC characters, so I want to make a single page with an overview of all the characters and files to make it as easy as possible to get them all. This will most likely end up being an itch page that's only accessible to Patreons.


Streamlined process of ordering custom KayKit assets.

I get quite a few commission jobs for making custom KayKit assets and I'd like to streamline this process as much as possible. Essentially I want to make a giant pricelist of all the different types of assets you can commission me to make and have some type of order form. 

With this I also want to open up the option to give a discount on custom work in return for the exclusivity rights, meaning I would be able to release the assets you commissioned to the public. These would either be free, paid, or patreon exclusive. I'm not sure yet on how much this discount would be, and ofcourse this whole step is completely optional.


Paid asset bundle.

After releasing the Environment Pack I'm planning to release a big bundle consisting of all previous assets packs updated with new (exclusive to that bundle) assets. Not sure yet on the exact pricing, but it'll be very fairly priced between $10-$30 and Patreons will receive a 50% discount.

After this bundle I will return with another set of 4-6 free asset packs that will eventually get bundled with new assets as KayKit Bundle Vol.2 etc.
