I like this episode. I liked the back story, both the gruesome end of that goa'uld and of how and why the Russians were there, I liked SG-1 having to deal with the Russians and I liked the claustrophobic atmosphere. I did find it unlikely that a clear chain of command wouldn't have been clearly established by Hammond before they set off, that's atypical and unrealistic. The clear MVP of this episode is clearly Daniel. He got them in, he figured out what happened to the Goa'uld and he found them a safe way out.

A Goa'uld trapped in a ziggurat on an alien planet for who knows how long wouldn't have known Russian or English before taking that host, and that host only knew how to speak English with a Russian accent, so that's what the Goa'uld would've had to work with. I don't see why the Goa'uld would care to improve their accent so long as they can communicate effectively enough to get what they want. As for the deep voice thing, it clearly works regardless of accent, but it's very strange and somewhat entertaining with a Russian accent, at least to me

That "3B1" that russians have on their uniform is in russian and it is actually "ZV1" which if you translate it it means "SG1"

This is one of my favorites of season 5 and another thing to is it is I actually agree with Jack. They can handle affairs with the gate better than anybody else can, in, in my opinion. Only because they've had the gate longer whisper, and and they they have seen much more then other people have.

6:38 - if anyone is curious he said: "the most powerful country in the world and they can't brew a decent cup of coffee."

A bit of a meh episode for me. I like how different it is atmospherically and that they tried something new, but there's just something sloppy about the writing that made it feel like a b-movie. The behaviour between Jack and the Russians was also a little too cartoony and unprofessional.

Vashta Nerada??

I think in some cases it makes sense, since they were deities in ancient earth or alien societies, the implication is that their own accent was the basis for the local accent rather than the other way around. Still, this is one of those rare cases where that makes no sense.

You bring up an interesting idea about accents. The Goa'uld always copy the accent of the host. I wonder, do they maybe just like using the natural voice of the host? It is obviously necessary if infiltrating, but you are right, and I never thought about it before, there is no reason they need to mimic the accent, they could speak with whatever accent they wanted. Perhaps there is more to it than just that then, maybe there is muscle memory involvement here, something they just can't or don't bother to overcome. But then, they do do the deep voice thing, so..... what an interesting topic to talk about, never thought about it at all.

The Tomb was always a standout of the season to me, just for how well it was directed and how effective the atmosphere of being locked in this ziggurat was. I also like that the Russians are getting more involved now. I actually felt rather bad for the Russian team. Despite his antagonism with O'Neill (Hammond looking likie he just hopes they don't kill each other as they leave), Zhukov did the noble thing trying to prevent the goauld from getting the eye in the end. Marchenko really should have just gotten out and reported back to the SGC for help rather than trying to be all macho and hold the multiple tons of rock open. Finally major Vallarin always struck me as a genuinely likeable guy, even stepping in to smooth over an unintended offense when Zhukov said they "took the precaution" of eating beforehand. Peter DeLuise once again inserted himself into an episode he directed. In this case he's one of the russians in the profiles from the first team. And I lol'd at "there's the shade". Jack was on a roll this episode too. A few minutes later he's calling out the "Russian" guns being made in Yugoslavia. Then again the P90 is made by a Belgian company so he can't really brag. One thing always confused me about this episode though. Why does the goa'uld speak with an accent that it's probably never heard? Did Marduk take over Vallarin and think "da, I like this accent, it compliments my megalomania"?

Timothy Nikiforovs

Your shade remark had me in stitches. Daniel and Jack can be such brothers at times 😂🤣

This episode is establishing a lot of future implications, some more obvious than others. 💎👀

As for Goa'uld taking different species as hosts, it's always a risk for the symbiote, but particularly when dealing with unknown species. This is precisely why the Jaffa were created, to improve the odds of successful blending by maturing in an engineered human offshoot the larva has time to adapt to human physiology. The Queens also take genetic samples of potential host species to again increase their chances for a successful blending. Much of this was learned from Hathor. Taking the creature as a host was an act of desperation in this episode. Better to die trying than getting eaten.

"Large scale attacks..." . . 😐.....................😁

He says: Desert Camo is his least favorite. RIght as I was thinking : Ah yes, my favorite look on O'Neill. haha! Looking forward to the upcoming episodes. This is where it gets GOOODDDDDD.

Mini lore drop episode Russians are gonna get more involved.

Ba'alWhale34

The bigger implication for this episode is the involvement of the Russians. Now that they know about the gate, and can't use one themselves, they want more involvement in the SGC. No longer can the SGC operate just autonomously, so secretly. It's starting to get more international.
