Sharing our thoughts on this time of real conflict

One of the core values here at Play On Tabletop is “to find the fun”. It was not long after our inception that the pandemic changed the world and we were humbled and honoured when we heard that our fun helped some people get through this challenging time. We feel it is good to have something to escape into, that connects us with likeminded individuals with similar values, and that will help invigorate us to face challenges and rough times. We create video content but the best thing to come out of this endeavour is getting to connect with this community of human beings.

Now, with what is happening in the Ukraine, many within this community are being affected. Some, still turn to this hobby as a way to escape and hopefully reinvigorate. Some, find it too much of a challenge to escape into a fantasy war-game during the very real war happening to them. We ourselves have found it challenging to act out actions on the tabletop especially after consuming news from Eastern Europe.

We want to acknowledge that anyone may have world events, or personal events, affect their feelings around wargaming and that is reasonable and natural. We don’t want any person to have to suffer the affects of war. We don’t want any person to not have fun. We don’t want any person to feel guilty about having fun.

We want to support those that make choices in these times, that feel right to them, so long as it does not hurt those around them. This is a time for compassion. This is a time when it is truly okay, to not be okay, and to reach out for help. This is a time to extend a helping hand when you are able, or to take a helping hand when you need it. This is a time for us at Play On Tabletop to be okay with what we can do in this time. None of us at Play On Tabletop are doctors and the only medicine we can prescribe is fun, and we are proud that we can bring fun to so many. It may not be the answer but we have to believe it is part of the solution.

We truly appreciate this community and the tabletop games that have brought us together. Our hearts go out to all those affected by war. We hope to be part of a world where no one needs to think twice about the fun they are having.

Sincerely,
Tak, Tycho, Nick, and Stephen

I hope you and your loved ones stay safe. We do not have access to an official coloured Thousand Sons army but this sounds like a worthwhile project.

Thanks for your honesty. I find the Russian invasion in Ukraine as a very challenging time but at the same time I find a lot of enjoyment and fun in watching your show. Please keep the show going. I have a suggestion that you can do a Friday live event with the usual explosions for every $50 but this time all the donations/collections go to some HELP-UKRAINE-CHARITY. Then we could help Ukraine and also enjoy the show.

I'm Ukrainian. Hello from Kiyv, guys, and thanks for this support. I am lucky enough to not have my home destroyed, my city occupied and my family killed. So I can spend some time here in internet. At this moment, I think I went through all stages. Starting with "stop having fun, all of you, when we're get murdered!", through absolute apathy, and to "we must hold on and live". News about more and more destruction and casualties keep coming all the day – and watching some fun content from, you know, "the life before" really helps to stay sane. And when creators also take their time to say these kind words, it triples the effect, believe me. As for playing wargames at times of real war. What I think while watching it, is just "imagine if all wars in the world would only happen on tabletop...". I don't think anybody should feel guilty for this. Keep it up, and thanks again. P.S. Do you have someone in community who has a Thousand Sons army in their "official" colour scheme? Because, that scheme has, well, something in common with the national flag of Ukraine, don't you think?) I found it a quite fun and inspiring coincidence. Maybe, an army showcase video (without context, of course) can be a good idea.
