Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Episode 5 REACTION

Comments

Yeah, if this wasn't literally the first season of Umamusume anime ever made im SURE they would have given her a lot more attention as a rivalry... but this was the first try so they were still figuring out their formula. Her story / placing is hella-underrated though (in the anime).

I wish we got more focus on king halo, her story in the game is very interesting. Maybe she'll get a moment sometime.

This is very much appreciated, I love seeing extra info like this!

So biggest thing to address here is that El Condor Pasa did not run in the Japanese Derby, because of specific restrictions that were later removed for foreign horses (either in breeding, ownership or training). They inserted El here because the horse was insanely popular, and also would have likely given Special Week about as good a race as we got here, though I will also say that Dead heats are pretty uncommon for the winning horses - you more frequently see them for further back horses in any individual race. I think outside of some real world trivia reasons for this choice, they also chose to insert El into this race because in real life, Seiun Sky came 4th and King Halo came 14th, so Spe lacked a real rival to run up against here. (additionally they just really like their version of El, which I am also in favor of). I will say in general horses have grown somewhat more fragile over the years as breeding has prioritized speed and power over stamina and durability, but in general many horses come out of their races fine. This also is in part because of modern changes to the way horses are run - usually called their rotations. In general modern race horses get a lot more rest then they did in the past - especially as winners. Typically the quickest turn around between races you will see for a high level winning horse is 4 to 5 weeks between races, but that can vary - they usually also take breaks for the summer to avoid heat stroke, and the winter season to dodge some of the worst weather. So typically you can picture the "major" seasons for Japanese horse as running from March-June and then September-December. This also ignores stuff like international travel, of course. Man there really is ***so much*** I can say about Uma Musume and racing in general - hope I'm not being annoying with all this.

Defuna

just to correct, McQueen is Gold Ship's Grandfather. Also the Derby is restricted to 3 year olds, not 4 year olds

Fun facts: 1. Gold Ship is Mejiro MacQueen's Grandson so in the anime Gold Ship always wants to play with her. (Of course in anime they don't know the history in the real world) 2. Gold Ship always hurt her eyes in the anime is a historical reference. When Gold Ship was running in a woodchips course, a woodchip from the front horse hurt his left eye. 3. The guy next to the announcer was voice-acted by the legendary jockey Yutaka Take, who "rides " on many of the horses in the series, including Special Week and Suzuka. 4. Japanese Derby is the most important race every year, as every horse can only participate once in their life, it is age restricted at age 3. 5. El Condor Pasa could not participate Japanese Derby in real life since she was not born in Japan. This part is an anime original (Actually nonsense). 6. You may compare to the actual 1998 Japanese Derby here (JRA Official Channel) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw__g4EAOyI
