Again, yeah, of course it's believable, but as a story beat it's just kinda shit. Like imagine an adventure story, Big Hero Man has to go pull a sword out of a rock on the other side of the country, and after many trials and tribulations he finally gets to the sword and pulls it out of the rock, only to come home and be told "no, idiot, Bad Villain Guy actually put a fake sword in front of the real one, you have to go back the way you came and get the real one", and then you get the same journey again with a different boss in the middle. It's hard to care the second time around.

^ this You really don't need to defend the writing, nobody watches this for a deep, complex and thought-provoking story. It's a means to an end. Edit: Not to say that the writing is just flat out garbage. The humor works, the reference game is on point, I'm sure if they wanted to go for a more serious story they could have, but where's the fun in that?

FluidDruid

I think it's done well. It's fully believable that a high schooler would take an adult at their word and believe a verbal promise as fact, and an adult would use the "we didn't actually sign anything, therefore it's not legally binding" excuse to get out of a situation that's not favorable to them. During the series it was also noted that the school was already poor to begin with, and had to sell off all their good tanks, so they're pretty much first on the chopping block for any cuts that need to happen.

Kelven

Oh yeah. I thought it was NATO because I saw someone comment about this on someone else reaction video.

MIF Reaction

University Select Senshado Team is based on the United Nations and not NATO.

JaMiBu

Fun Fuct: Chihatan is Imperial Japan, Continuation is Finland, and All-Star University/University Select Senshado team is NATO. And don't forget about Klara VA. She's an actual Russian, not like Nonna's VA. Nonna's VA is Japanese who is fluent in Russian, meanwhile Klara's VA is Russian who can speak Japanese Edit: All-Star University/University Select Team It's based on United Nations not NATO. Addition: The All-Star University team's members are recruited from universities across Japan, usually from elite national, public, and private schools such as "T-dai" (Tokyo University), "K-dai" (Keio University) or "O-dai" (Osaka University). While on the team they undergo rigorous training, preparing them to be integrated into various professional teams once they graduate. Their current commander is Alice Shimada, the heir to the house of the Shimada style, which is a rival to the Nishizumi house. You can read about this team here: https://gup.fandom.com/wiki/All-Stars_University_Team

Realism =/= good storytelling. It being realistic doesn’t make it any less repetitive. We’re given 0 reason to believe the initial plan to save the school wouldn’t work, and without any foreshadowing or anything it’s natural that the plan failing would feel contrived, especially since we end up just jumping right back into the same trope. Not that it matters, they could say they need to win a worldwide tournament to keep their school lunches and it’d still work ‘cause people are here for the tank fights.

FriedRice

MEXT is the real japanese ministry of education and culture // Chihatan is larping as the Japanese Imperial Army hence their obsession for banzai charging atvthe enemy resulting in all of them being taken out

Enrique Barloco

People often says that the girls having to save the school over again is bad stprytelling but I actually I tink is a clever... subversion(?) In the trope of "yeah we saved our school!" Trope and is a more realistic aproach. An adult wanting to close a school is simply not going to agree with a child on what is a goverment desition that big

Enrique Barloco

Sumire Uesaka certainly is one of the stand-out VAs for him. Having heard her in multiple main cast roles on the anime he's reacted to on the channel - one of which of course also includes having her speak Russian in Roshidere (Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian) which had provided the chance to explain her studying of Russian.

Girls und Panzer: Der Film! A wonderful natural continuation story even though one could perhaps argue that the broken mouth promise of not closing the school if they won the Senshado national tournament... came a bit out of nowhere though I personally don't mind. Taking enough time to truly set it sink in that the school is due to close down... before coming in with the revelation that there is one last chance was done nicely. Alice Shimada as the commander of the University Select Senshado team was really cute. Like... she's just a seemingly pretty silent girl who's also a child prodigy and good at Senshado all the same serving as a really dangerous opponent (silent, but extremely dangerous... I appear to really like this type of character)... whilst also having a huge love for Boko! And... showcasing how extremely tightly bounded all of the Senshado teams are through their sport... and going as far as supporting Oarai fully in this time of great trouble was heartwarming. Like Saunters said... the best way to pay them back for that is to be a good and difficult opponent in future Senshado matches! So now... what will happen next? I can't wait to find out! - 2:24: Mika, the girl playing the kantele (a traditional Finnish instrument which also gives away what kind of country her "Continuation High School" she is Senshado commander for is larping)... is voiced by 能登麻美子 (Mamiko Noto). Personally, I do not have much experience with her, but you have apparently heard her voice in at least Re:Zero as well as have/will heard/hear her in one of the Fate series' (Fate/Grand Carnival)... also in Konosuba as well as as in Love Live Superstar!! as Kanon's mother. - Aki (the other girl in the same scene who also works as a gunner/loader of a tank) is voiced by 下地紫野 (Shino Shimoji)... I don't think you have watched anything else with her in it... nor have I. - 3:52 / 10:54 / 40:10: Kinuyo Nishi, the commander of the Chihatan Academy Senshado team (larping Japan itself) who teamed up with the Oarai Girls Academy for the beginning of the movie... is voiced by 瀬戸麻沙美 (Asami Seto). You will know her the most as Nano Eiai in 100 Girlfriends, but she has also appeared Officer Jenny in Pokémon: Sun & Moon, Frill Shiranui (one of Ruby's classmates at her school... black long hair and green eyes) in Oshi no Ko and as Eri (the Team Star Commander) in Pokémon: Paldean Winds. - 10:10 / 15:27: The new (transferred to Pravda very recently in regards to the timeline and is from Novosibirsk, an actual Russian city... according to Nonna) girl for Pravda school, Klara, is voiced by Jenya Davidyuk, an actual Russian native VA... explaining the fluentness of her Russian there. She hasn't voiced many characters in her time as a VA, so you very likely have never heard of her before. Funnily for that scene, Katyusha... of course says "Speak in [language one is watching the movie in]". - 19:50: That's the same store which was rammed into by a tank during the exhibition match against St. Gloriana in the TV anime as well if you didn't notice. - 22:25: Yeah, took me a bit to realize that it's Enter Enter Mission in an instrumental myself... - 23:40: Yeah and for monitoring the state of the battle closely. - 24:53: By the way, good and realistic for the Pravda tanks to be repainted into regular tank green instead of the white they had during the Snowy match. - 33:34: MEXT stands for Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and is the actual name of the ministry in Japan. - 36:53: I don't think the game there represents World of Tanks, but World of Tanks has been named in some dubs on the TV anime side as mentioned before. - 40:55: "I could not deal with German humor everyday." - *Hmm... you know that I am internally dying in laugher.* But like... from what we have seen and heard of Black Forest... it's quite the serious school with very little room for humor or jokes. - 42:35: Here I feel like watching a goodbye scene from the end of one of the Pokémon series'. - 49:35: Boko is voiced by 藤村歩 (Ayumi Fujimura). She also voices Megumi, one of the three vice commanders of the All-Star University team later in the movie. (Long dark brown hair and greyish blue eyes.) - 51:13: The introduction scene for Alice Shimada, commander of the All-Star University (or University Select as these subs call them) Senshado team, a child prodigy who skipped multiple years in classes and is a huge fan of Boko just like Miho. She is voiced by 竹達彩奈 (Ayana Taketatsu). She has (in terms of characters you probably know) voiced Lisia (the Hoenn Contest Spectacular idol from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) in Pokémon Journeys, a pink-haired girl called Aura in Frieren, a green-haired magical girl called Alina Gray in Madoka Magica: Side Story and a purple-haired girl called Azusa Nakano in K-ON!. - 51:45: This f*cker of a MEXT official in Renta Tsuji who's also considered the main antagonist of the movie... is voiced by 景浦大輔 (Daisuke Kageura). You don't recognize him from anywhere, I think. And... I just had a horny surprise waiting for me when I looked him up due to finding a hentai in the list (happens sometimes with both animators and VAs). - 57:53: Chiyo Shimada aka. the head of the Shimada Style and University Select Team as well as mother of Alice Shimada... is voiced by ゆきのさつき (Yukino Satsuki). From the anime you probably know... she has voiced Valerie, the Fairy-type Gym Leader of Laverre City in the Kalos Region, in Pokémon XY..., Marian, the announcer for Sinnoh Region Pokémon Contests, in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl and Izuko Gaen, a main character from multiple Monogatari series'. - 58:05: Rumi, another one of the three vice-commanders of the University Select Team (grey-purplish hair and glasses)... is voiced by 中原麻衣 (Mai Nakahara). From the anime you know... she has also voiced Riko Hakozaki, one of the lesbian teachers, in Bloom Into You... and also a character from Re:Zero. - 58:07: Azumi, the third and last one of the three vice-commanders of the University Select Team (light brown hair and turquoise eyes)... is voiced by 飯田友子 (Yuuko Iida). From the anime you know... she has also voiced a character in Idolmaster (I don't think you have met her yet since it's one of the later seasons for that). - 58:14: I only notice it now... but on that pocket watch, the word "Actas" is written... of course, that is a reference to animation production Actas who is in charge of animation producing Girls und Panzer. I have seen a similar fourth wall break before in Madoka Magica where missiles were labelled as "Shaft". - 1:02:41: The amount of tanks in a battle depends on the rules of the match. In the national tournament we saw in the TV anime, it even varied by round. - 1:10:05: The Continuation High School is a school introduced in this movie and was not seen in the TV anime. You are correct in not remembering them. - 1:34:01: Operation: Macaroni definitely was the Anzio strategy with fainting to be more intimadating with the tank standees/fakes they used in their battle against Oarai. Because you seemingly don't remember. - 1:36:30: As far as I am concerned in speculation... the super heavy Maus tank doesn't quite fit Miho's Senshado battling style. - 1:43:57: And now... Katyusha needs to pair up with Anteater Team. If you remember, the grey-haired girl and gunner/loader of the tank, Piyotan, is also voiced by Sumire Uesaka just like Nonna, so in some ways, this is a fun scene in replacing Nonna partially with Piyotan. - 1:52:15: Momoga (the driver of Anteater Team)... really was too weak to use the shift lever during the finals of the National Tournament and only got it into Reverse with all of her arm strength and... now she is so strong that the shift lever just breaks off if she uses her new-found muscle power. - 1:54:10: It's still an unreliable Porsche Tiger which keeps breaking down during usage after all... Automobile Club aka. Leopon Team. - 2:05:26: Seems like Alice's mom does have a bit of a soft spot for her... since even though the promise only was to sponsor the Boko Museum if Alice won... she still did it anyway. - 2:08:21: And it introduced new characters... I suppose you gotta wait and see if they will reappear in the remaining OVAs and the das Finale movies. - 2:08:43: As someone who watches this franchise alongside you... I can only speculate that the (eventually) six "das Finale" movies are more interconnected than this self-contained story.

Chihatan Academy(WW2 Imperial Japan-themed school) and Continuation High School(Finnish-themed school) first appearance is in this film but they were foreshadowed beforehand. Their schools were mentioned in the TV series in the tournament bracket and in the Anzio OVA, Miho was talking to Hana, and Saori about a friendly match between Kuromorimine and Continuation in the past where Continuation almost beaten KMM and in OVA6 Banquet War, Nishi from Chihatan and Mika from Continuation gave congratulatory messages to Ooarai.

JaMiBu

If you have chance, you should watch these movies in 4DX cinema, that's the only movie that deserves 4DX IN THE HISTORY.

好花推し シャロ

Continuation academy represent Finland, the sequence of them taking down the pershings while she casually plays the Kantele is probably the most epic scene in the whole series imo, also, Ive only just noticed the Anzio tank is so small they have it in the back of the Fiat lorry during the end credits!

Klara's VA IS a natural russian

Enrique Barloco

And here we have the introduction to Chihatan Academy. They're school theme is Japan. Their commander, Kinuyo Nishi, operates a Type 97 Chi-Ha, which is the most widely produced Japanese medium tank of WW2. Some of their other tanks include the Type 95 Ha-Go and Type 2 Ka-Mi. As for their musical theme, which plays when they start to charge, is Yuki no Shingun (The Snowy March), and was an Imperial Japanese Army march composed in 1895 after the First Sino-Japanese War. As for Klara's Russian sounding fluent, Klara's VA (Jenya Davidyuk) is actually a half-Ukranian Russian. She was born in the Soviet Union, and has been into anime/Japanese culture since the 90's. She moved to Japan in 2005 to become a voice actress and singer. I'm unsure whether other commenters mentioned this during the Pravda matches in the series, but Nonna's VA (Katyusha's vice-commander) is also (fairly?) fluent in Russian. Sumire Uesaka, a native Japanese, has been a fan of Russian culture since high school, and majored in Russian studies.

Kelven

We've arrived at the peak. The show was already great, but the things the GuP team can do with extra time and budget literally and figuratively blow me away. Singlehandedly proving that the "CGI = bad" mindset is bullshit.
