Project Binky - Episode 41

In the penultimate build episode of Project Binky, we didn't get as far as we'd hoped. This is not unusual for us as you know, but this one was lined up and ready to go with just a few bits to finish off earlier in the week except for a nasty hand injury sustained by Nik that slowed us down some. Super glue was deployed to keep us going; after all, that's what it was designed to do right?

Time flies when you're having fun...

To those of you that are still with us, you have our eternal thanks. Those who moved on, I can't say I blame you.

Crikey what a nightmare this one was. It was actually worse than epiosde 39 because we had every belief that we'd fly through it and be back on track. But as I've said before, the universe had other ideas. However, we beat the universe back with a selection of hammers and rotary tools.

Binky Update - Feb 2025

There's nothing else to go wrong. I can't think of a single thing left.

The little mill rebuild went very well indeed. Not straightforward at all to convert what is essentially a small manual mill that had subsequently been upgraded to use stepper motors for control - to one that uses ball screws and not massively worn-out lead screws. When you need a mill to make the parts to fix the mill, some "imaginative" work holding solutions had to be found.

We had high hopes of bringing you episode 40 of Project Binky today but the universe intervened again because, well, of course it did.

Cutting out the last two pieces of the instrument cluster faces on the mill, they came out egg shaped. Turns out, after 25 years of hard graft and constant adjustment, the lead screws had just worn out. No spares in the UK and they're expensive so we figured the best way...

Howie Did It - 3D Printing a PCB

We might have been mildly distracted last week by a new arrival - we lucked into a solid 2 door Mk1 Escort shell - so we were very, very excited. No money was spent - we swapped it for our rotten R33 Skyline with a friend of ours.

Project Binky - Episode 39

Rough (very) cut Episode 39

Don't feel obliged to watch this. This is very much part of the editing process, one we use all the time: a rough cut to give us an idea of where we are and how much we still need to shoot.

It's not finished. We still have some pieces to camera and B roll to shoot and I've done nothing about the credits, levels and the transitions and general tidying up, so please don't think it's anywhere near ready.

It's coming - finally!

Despite mother nature's best efforts - flooding at Richard's house and the shed being cut off due to flooding - episode 39 of Project Binky is coming your way next Friday 25th October.

It's the most complicated edit I think we've ever done; there's footage going back a very long time alongside clips we're shooting right now and trying to create something coherent out of this lot is proving bloody difficult.

State of Play - Some Good News

I've written much over the last year or so about all the things that have gone wrong with the process. Most boiled down to one or two things that were completely unforeseen and almost undetectable. Every time we fixed an issue, something else went wrong and then we fixed that and the original thing went wrong again.

It was like the universe was against us and unless you were there, there's just no way you would believe it. I can barely believe it myself to be honest.

Binky Update!

The feeling of relief was palpable at the shed recently. We’ve been plagued by an issue we didn’t know we had and that has been going on for years unidentified. It hasn’t been a problem up till the advent of our metal solder 3D printing malarkey. Since the very first foray into this idea when initial tests on a cheap 3D printer showed promise, we’ve been fighting a battle with one armed tied behind our back – and we didn’t even know it.

February Update

If it wasn't for his absolute refusal to compromise on any aspect of the mini build, we'd have been long done by now.

We were astonished to find that you couldn't buy an aftermarket switch that has a backlight as well as the warning light. You can buy illuminated switches almost anywhere, but they only glow with one colour. Nik went off and modified a bunch of switches we bought from a well known parts retailer to get what he wan...

New year - new BOM. (Not really)

In BOM central, we're now in editing mode for episode 39; much footage is in the can, but there is much to shoot still. We're unsure currently how exactly the next episode will take shape; there's so much we want to show that it may end up being two back-to-back episodes followed by a Howie Did It, or it may end up being one longer episode and the Howie. We'll know more in a week or so.

A Fuelish Endeavour - Taking a Centenarian to the Pub

We're well used to not everything going to plan, so when we turned up to our friend James Cameron's place to film the 100 Year Old Dodge video it came as little surprise to find the car reluctant take us to the pub for our promised lunch.

Cue hours of disassembly, fettling and top quality MacGyver work to try and get the old girl running. It wasn't our plan to have to do this but it seemed too good an opportunity to Ben not to film it.

100 Year Old Dodge Touring Car.

Earlier this year - on a rare excursion from the shed – we visited James Cameron, the boss of armed forces charity Mission Motorsport to see his fabulous 1923 Dodge Touring Car. A century old but still clocking up the miles, this car is now a rare beauty. We chatted about his entry into petrol hedonism and his forays into motorsport alongside what attracted him to buy the old Dodge.

We were lucky enough to be invtited to shakedown a beautifully restored Tiga SC81 Sports 2000 car last year at Silverstone. This then turned into an invitation to race it at the prestigious Silverstone Classic event in late August 2022. Yak shaving and the definition of finished...

How we laughed when the adage was thrown at us that the last 10% of a project takes 90% of the time. Well, we're not laughing now...

On screen, it's relatively easy to "fudge" a shot or a part to look like it's finished when in reality, it's anything but. And at the end of episode 38, the interior looked pretty much done except for the dash. So, the idea was to crack on with the dash and finish everything else off later. First of all, thank you for the incredible reaction to episode 38, it's blown us away. As you might imagine, we were somewhat nervous about it. The more than 2000 comments is astonishing and that led to a thought.

It's impossible for us to reply to each question posed individually so we wondered if there might be an appetite for a follow up video after each main Binky (and subsequent projects) release, to go over in a little more detail some of the things that crop up.

Cor, yeah, long time coming but we changed round our anticipated releases to bring you episode 38 in April as promised. 

It was lovely to get back to creating content instead of creating headaches. I really hope you enjoy it, we enjoyed getting back to writing silly gags and whipping out the dad jokes along with some hopefully quite interesting stuff too.
