I see, the issue I have really is that instead of trying to understand the story, themes, and ideas from the point of view of the target audience, he's often attempting to disect it. Disect it using wholey different view points and values that conflict with both the showrunners (SHAFT) and the author (NisiOisiN) who have their own understanding and comprehensive views on the subject matter. In other words, instead of reading the narrative as it's intended, he's often trying to argue with the show and it's intent instead. At this point, it can't even be called consuming the media 'critically', but rather an attempt to scavange the bits he considers 'good'. This kind of hawkish mindset will invariably lead to these kinds of misunderstandings happening again and again, as this isn't the first time it's happened, but definitely the most notable example. What I think would help a lot is if he were to try and lay out and piece together the themes and ideas presented in the first arc, Bakemonogatari, and an arc that he liked and another that he disliked. Doing so will absolutely let him be more freely critical all the while garnering a deeper understanding of what makes NisiOisiN such a prolific philospher, a philospher that has been able to capture and write about the human condition in such a vivid and thoughtful manner to have allowed for Monogatari to become as amazing as it has. At the end of the day, I really do think it's Western ideas understandably clashing with a more thoughtful Japanese media. As you and I have probably noticed by now, he'll stop a nuanced conversation two characters are having in order to disect and argue against the idea being presented, but fail to notice that neither view points are meant to be taken at face value, and instead are meant to be used to inform the reader about the type of personality and belief system either character has. It was never meant to be 'Which idea is objectively correct' but moreso 'What do they *currently* believe in'. We have those moments in this story so we may understand their actions and motivations to a more comprehensive degree. An idea that's all but abandoned in Western critical analysis, where instead we'll often focus on "What is the *objectively correct* answer.", as we try to 'predict' the outcome while lambasting characters for not doing what we perceive to be the 'objectively correct' action. Of course, this is all just an underlying issue with differing cultural values and ideas. Mat has made some decent progress as he's continued to expose himself to this format, to media like this, notably with less vocal criticisms about Araragi and his pseudo-loli harem lol (Yotsugi best girl)

2024-11-19 20:06:59 +0000 UTCI wouldn't even say it's really a culture difference thing, more of just a straight up misunderstanding of subtitles that admittedly lack the nuance the show is trying to convey. He seemed to think Kuchinawa-san was referencing the idea of an "intrinsic, absolute" personality of Sengoku being unlocked, which for reasons I laid out in a previous comment wasn't so. So it's not a value difference between the Japanese show and Western reactor, the show just wasn't even arguing for that deterministic outlook of human nature either XD. Can't really get into why monogatari is thematically the opposite of the impression he got for spoiler reasons, but we both know how this plotline gets resolved is all I'll say.

2024-11-18 22:04:51 +0000 UTCWhile I'm a gatari glazer I wouldn't consider this a "perfect monogatari arc" either in the way Neko Shiro or a certain other arc in this season are. I would however count this among some of the most quintessential monogatari-style twists/subversions. Like leave it to monogatari to tell you a whole story and then at the end tell you "Yeah I just kinda made all that up to gaslight you lol".

2024-11-18 20:53:35 +0000 UTCNadeko makes up the stories. So maybe that 180 twist of her in the previous episode is also made up? Perhaps that's just how she felt or she thought of doing it maybe
