Fallout Equestria Update: Chapters 1-5

Hey Everyone!

This is going to be a new little bit of bts content I do every now and again for 7+10$ Patrons. As per my last update, i've started work on a video reviewing the entirety of Fallout: Equestria because I am a madman guided by hubris. This is going to be a sort of initial impressions/journal thing, so don't expect coherence. Alright let's run it up.

What I Read

This week I read Chapters 1-5 as well as a bunch of wiki material. I want to start moving at a chapter a day at minimum from here out. There's a lot to cover and I want this video done in April. 

What I Thought

My engagement with Fallout: Equestria up to this point was nonexistent. I've known about it for a while but pretty much nothing outside of the premise. A Fallout x My Little Pony fanfiction with an extremely dedicated fanbase unto itself, seperate from the main properties. This was interesting, but I never really cared to check what the hype was about. Now that i've started it, what i've found is.... fan fiction. 

I've read a decent amount of fanfiction in my life and this is certainly one of the fanfictions of all time. I expected either to hate it or to find it extremely interesting but instead what I've found (so far) has been pretty standard. Now, that's not to say I won't make a video on it, I definitely will, it just means reading it will be harder than initially expected because there are chapters during which I have no notes, which is strange to say this early in. 

From what is there, it's alright. It's fallout but with all the major words replaced. vaults are stables, pipboy is pipbuck, technology is all magic, and there are some bits from MLP involved like cutie marks being a major one so fasr, a concept I generally dislike. 

The first handful of chapters were mostly world setup and character establishment (our protagonist is the lame duck of the herd, the WLW pony littlepip. She heads out of her stable in search of a woman whose pipbuck she helped repair. The next bit is world establishment, and it seemed to me to scream THIS IS AN ADULT STORY!!!!!!!!!! as loud as it could. Lots of swearing, blood, gore and other violence. It even gets to a point in chapter four if i recall where littlepip finds raider ponies who have captured and sexually abused other ponies. It's defintely trying really hard to be edgier than its pony source material, which I think is part of the appeal for people who like this a lot. 

Chapter 5 finally begins to introduce more characters and world stuff beyond the whole wasteland thing. Littlepip meets a community of cowboy(?) ponies and a mysterious voice controlling the world's equivalent to eyebots. Particularly interesting is it seems that everywhere that the games would mention china or chinese communists, the fanfic mentions zebras, which is interesting kind of and i hope it goes somewhere. I've got the whole fic loaded onto a kindle and it's telling me i'm 5% of the way through so, we've got plenty of time to have it go somewhere. 

There are parts during which I feel the fiction is derivative of fallout games, for example the "leaving the vault to find a missing person" thing, but so far this isn't really the case. Good stuff. There are a bunch of editing mistakes or weird writing choices especially during the combat bits, but it's a fanfiction so that comes with the territory.
