Buffy 6x14 Older And Far Away

You know, I like the episodes where the group just hangs out together. It would be even better if supernatural elements weren't involved, but we can't have everything 😅

A lot of great moments in this episode, a few things to look out for (Tara & Willow, I'm keeping an eye on them!!), that delightful fellow who loves his kittens is back (I really like him?? He's just sweet to me for some reason!) and Spike seems to be getting very brazen. That makes me think maybe one day he will just come out with it, and everyone will know. Buffy would be FURIOUS though.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Too bad Clem and Merl never got to hang out!

Dusty

Yeah, I get that - I just feel it all fell in together perfectly but of course it did, it's a show 😅

Juliette Gaming

Yeah, I adore Spike's little actions like that. He's definitely one I look to, to see what his expression is!

Juliette Gaming

Yes, of course! It would be weird if Tara wasn't there. She IS part of the group and has been for ages 💜

Juliette Gaming

Yes, it was the actor who played Cecily in 'Fool for Love'. She played the woman who scorned William (pre-Spike) for the poetry he was writing for her by saying that he was 'beneath her'. The actors just reacted as an in-joke during a take and it was left in.

David Schmidt

It was just something the actors did during a take and it was left in with the thought of using it in the future but the writers/producers never did.

David Schmidt

I love that Buffy "really wants Tara at the party". I still remember how her and Xander were talking about "not understanding half of what she says", but after Family Tara was completely accepted into the group it seems.

As others have already said, the actress who played Hallie was also the actress that played Cecily, the lady whom Spike described as 'effulgent' in a poem he wrote back in his still human days. It's never specifically stated in the show but it's considered that Cecily & Hallie are in fact the same person, which is why Spike & Halfrek knew/recognised each other.

Anya was just having a panic attack. She said they'd never been in a situation where they were trapped like animals. Aside from the major battle last season Anya said she's always run when there was an apocalypse. Being trapped with no hope of escape at that time must've been terrifying for her. And adding further depth to Spike's already complicated character, if you rewatch the episode notice how he's shaking his head in disbelief when the others are trying to push Willow to do magic. Spike is very perceptive and understands a lot more than his tough guy, I'm so cool persona would perhaps have you believe. He's picked up on things quicker than others in past seasons, he picked up on Willow's real reason for not telling him about the resurrection spell, and his reaction to the group wanting Willow to do magic is also very much along the lines of, "That's the trouble with magic, there's always consequences, always". Spike isn't a good guy, he's also not always entirely wrong sometimes either. It makes for a very interesting, and layered character.

This was the episode where I seriously started to wonder if someone on the writing team had direct experience of addiction, because the thing with Willow keeping stuff so she could concentrate more on recovery was just way too accurate. I still kept my injecting kit for months after I went on the methadone program, for the exact same reason. In the early days of recovery there's always this little voice in the back of your head saying, "this is gonna be bad, what if it gets too bad, and you can't handle it". Having something there as a sort of security blanket does help quiet that voice down. I spent most of my time as an addict, really desperately trying not to be an addict. My (many) previous attempts at getting clean I had always thrown my kit out and it just never worked. Like you'd go through the withdrawal, but as soon as you felt better then this annoying, nagging voice would pipe up on full blast, like, "you know this is just the start, how are you going to handle the cravings, it's gonna get bad, you're not gonna be able to deal with it". Without something to quiet that voice down it'd be 2-3 days and I'd be straight back to using again. Keeping my kit on hand kind of allowed me to talk back to that voice, in a way, and tell it to chill out, because it wasn't like I didn't still have my injecting equipment with me, and couldn't just go score if I really had to (obviously with the clear intention of never actually doing so). I knew a lot of other addicts who did the same thing, because it worked for us at the time. As for Dawn, shoplifting/stealing in general absolutely can be a rush (it's an adrenalin rush), and in the same way that drugs can distract you from feelings you don't understand or want to deal with, then that adrenalin rush can do the same thing. There's a lot of reasons people steal stuff: you don't have money to afford basic necessities (and if you're like me you feel bad using charity services too often, because then you're taking stuff away from people who really need it; not thinking of course that the fact you're literally stealing food means you are one of the people who really needs it); stealing to make money (I used to steal to order, clothes mainly, to make a few extra bucks here and there); good old classic teenage rebellion (did that one too), and just for the sheer thrill/distraction from life stuff when you get that hit of adrenalin (also me, a lot, as well). Man I sound like a right like criminal when I was younger LOL! Yeah, I was, and it's not something I'm exactly proud of, even if I am open about my past.

Not sure if it is 100% confirmed but Halfrek is believed to be ‘Cecily’ the lady Spike was in love with in Fool for Love who said he was beneath her. Played by the same actress. The little nod of recognition from the both of them I think is our way of confirming it though it’s never addressed again. Nice little touch though.

Mark McMinn

Since you can't google it, Juliette, I'll help out: She was in season 5 in the flashback of Spike's pre-vampire days, the lady he was in love with and who said he was beneath her.

Oliver

Based on Dawn saying "I didn't even know we had guidance counselors", I assume that her school doesn't actually have guidance counselors and that's how Buffy realized that Dawn must have made a wish to a vengeance demon.

Lime Pie

OOH Neil, my memory is NOT good at all 🤣 Hence why thinking she reminded me of Glory haha! I think it was all the curls and the rounded face. She must have played another character in the past? Darn it, now I'm curious!! I hope your weekend goes well too, Neil. I know you've got a big week coming up. It's a quiet one for me, just getting things done around the house. I've actually been thinking of applying for a job at KFC or McDonalds, I think inspired by Fast Food Simulator 🤣 I have EXCELLENT customer service, after all hahahaha

Juliette Gaming

You're very welcome!

Chris Carman

it feels SO good to finally have someone in the know, especially someone like Tara who can be trusted fully!! Buffy must feel so much relief.

Juliette Gaming

I've not heard of that! Might be one to check out. Thank you!

This episode was inspired by my favorite surrealist film of all time: "The Exterminating Angel" (dinner guests "stranded" at the home of their host find--- for some mysterious unexplained reason--- that they simply cannot leave) by the great Spanish director Luis Buñuel. You can see other little hints of his influence in some of the dream-sequence jokes in Season 4 "Restless"...

Chris Carman

I'm sure Buffy brought on many a muscle cramp in young men back in the day 😂 Of course what happened is not Dawn's fault. There's no way she could have known what would happen. Giving Buffy a stolen present though, that was not good at all. Stealing as a way of acting out is one thing but giving a stolen item as a present is so much worse in my opinion. I just feel it's really disrespectful to the person recieving the stolen present. If you have a good memory you may think of another reason that Hallie/Halfrek looked familiar. Thanks for another great reaction Juliette. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Neil Hanson

I love Tara in this episode. Especially her little teasing of Spike and his "muscle cramp". 🤣
