Buffy 6x7 Once More with Feeling - FULL

(I've also uploaded an edited version to Patreon, and it will include more than the YouTube edit as there was a struggle with getting the YouTube version cleared)

WOW WOW WOW!

What an incredible treat. Completely unexpected, and totally loved.

ADDICTED to some of these songs! A standout lyric I keep singing is "I touch the fire and it freezes me". That one just gets stuck in my head!

I am amazed at everyone's talent. It should be against the law that everyone is this amazing!

Buffy 6x7 Once More with Feeling - FULL

Comments

When I watched this, almost 20 years ago, it was the greatest hour of television I'd ever experienced. Watching it with you was the second greatest.

Todd Bolton

I got my Spotify wrap and The Buffy playlist is my #1 🀣

Mathilde Sgherri

There were a number of other series that tried to do this shortly after they saw Buffy do it so well. My favorite attempt to do it again was pretty recent, and actually had some pretty subtle (but clear if you've been paying attention!) easter-egg references to Buffy. I'll throw this through ROT13.com to hide it in case anybody wants to avoid a potential spoiler: Fgne Gerx: Fgenatr Arj Jbeyqf "Fhofcnpr Euncfbql" -- but it still wasn't as good as OMWF!

Jeremy J Nickurak

'Fraid not Dylra. I'm in the UK and I was watching the DVD along with Jules. It's just the same as the one she watched, sadly.

Mark Coyne

It was just incredibly well done. I'm going to watch it again this week, probably tomorrow πŸ₯°

Juliette Gaming

Yeah, that subtle change... 😭😭 I feel so bad for Tara.

Juliette Gaming

Oliver, personally I didn't like the Scrubs one. It may have been creative, but I feel like they added in a musical just to fit in with everyone else. That's just me though. Some people like musical episodes. I feel like they tend to ruin great shows more than anything though πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Melanie

Juliette, I've seen many TV shows with musicals, and none compare to Buffy lol. But that bit in Supernatural was definitely awesome haha

Melanie

My favorite little thing, and it's heartbreaking... when Tara sings "you MAKE me believe" because she is so in love and then "you MADE me believe" because of the betrayal she feels. That entire duet will probably give you a lump in your throat even after a 5th or 10th watch. I usually watch the youtube edits but I dug out the DVD for this one.

Dusty

This episode made me really adore Buffy as a show esp. its storytelling and character arcs. Or to be more precise: The way it was set up in all previous episodes of this season. When I watched the beginning of season 6 for the first time I actually wondered if they didn't overdo it with all those secrets and hidden problems within the Scooby gang. I apprehended a bunch of cheesy confessions or reveals in mid-season. But then this episode happened. Wow, it uses the conventions of musical theatre perfectly. If you can't say it, you sing it. (And if you can't sing it, you dance it - like Dawn's fear of the demon's minions and Buffy's frantic self-destructive dance.)

Oliver

I think "Scrubs" also did a great job, albeit with much lower stakes because it doesn't serve a Season arc there just a one-off plot.

Oliver

Oh, there ist another version? Didn't realize that

Oliver

There were other shows that kinda did musical Episodes. This one is THE musical episode. It was absolutely jaw-dropping at the time and in hindsight is also the single best deployment of a storytelling "Truth-bomb". All secrets exposed, people almost always sang about something they either didn't want to talk about or didn't know the whole truth about (Under your spell). Joss Whedon said he needed something as outlandish as a musical to get Buffy to confess, because she never would tell them willingly. We've all been waiting for your reaction to this one, welcome to the world where Once More With Feeling exists, I think you're going to enjoy it :)

Mark Coyne

Iirc it was the same on the English DVD version.

Dyrla

So when this episode first aired in Australia there was a teensy inclusion to the Tara/Willow song. Instead of it cutting off at "You make me..." it actually cut off a fraction after, so Tara ended up singing, "You make me com..." Yeah the double entendre was strong with that one. :D

Claire Eyles

I think this is the first time I've seen a musical in a show!! Unless that Eye of the Tiger part in Supernatural counts πŸ˜…

Juliette Gaming

Rest in Peace was incredible!!! I can't number the songs as it's too hard, but it's definitely right up there for me πŸ’œ

Juliette Gaming

I am a Xander fan (though I don't think many are!) But yes, he does the silliest things 🀣 "ooh let's just have fun with a singing demon!" NO! It doesn't work like that, dude! Hahaha

Juliette Gaming

That line honestly just stands out, doesn't it? It's so perfect. I feel so bad for Buffy. She's had such a tough time, for the longest time. I don't know how she keeps going πŸ˜”

Juliette Gaming

I think she sounded amazing! I do love that she was nervous to sing, though πŸ₯ΉπŸ’œ

Juliette Gaming

I love that it covered SUCH huge story beats! It was perfectly done!

Juliette Gaming

I will watch it again this week!! I thought it was brilliant. How long did it take you to get the songs out of your head haha 🀣 or maybe they are still there!!

Juliette Gaming

I'm so glad you enjoyed this one so much!! It really was one of the best episodes so far, for me πŸ’œ

Juliette Gaming

My singing skills rival even the very best, clearly 🀣 I was going to sing the whole outro but it wouldn't be able to do my thoughts justice that way πŸ₯Ή plus, everyone's ears would bleed!!!

Juliette Gaming

That's just so true.... there's no adult supervision without Giles. Now I feel so sad because so many of them are just.... on their own in the world? Buffy without her mum. Willows parents are who knows where. Tara's family are terrible. Xanders parents fight often and seem to be quite harsh. Anya... well, her family is long gone. It's actually really sad...

Juliette Gaming

I've actually seen Dr Horrible!! It was AMAZING! I watched it after Firefly and recorded a reaction to it but I think I either didn't like my reaction and wasn't confident enough at the time, or I thought it would be a pain to edit due to the songs πŸ˜… but my goodness, it was amazing!!

Juliette Gaming

I think I've actually said that exact thing in a previous episode hahaha

Juliette Gaming

I cannot wait to watch it again πŸ’œπŸ’œ

Juliette Gaming

Someone always has to ruin the vibes, man 🀣 buffy!!!

Juliette Gaming

I am not a big fan of musicals as well, and to be honest I don't think I've seen one (πŸ™ˆ) but this was PERFECT πŸ’œ

Juliette Gaming

I actually listened to some on Spotify when going for a walk πŸ₯° obsessed!!

Juliette Gaming

Hinton Battle, who played the demon 'Sweet', sadly passed away in January of this year. The guy was an absolute legend, not just of Broadway, but dance, choreography and performance in general. He studied at one of the first African American Ballet companies (Jones-Haywood School of Ballet), before joining the School of American Ballet and training under George Balanchine (that's roughly the equivalent of an Opera singer training under someone like Pavarotti, or a modern day Pop artist getting singing and performance lessons from Taylor Swift). He was the original Scarecrow in the Broadway production of 'The Wiz' (an Urban 'Black' take on the Wizard of Oz), before Michael Jackson took over the role in the movie version. He won 3 Tony Awards on Broadway, all for best actor in a musical production, as well as a Fred Astaire award, and a special award from the NAACP. In honour of his achievements and contribution to the arts, Broadway Theatres dimmed their lights for 1 minute as a sign of respect.

Claire Eyles

I loved this reaction! Your little song at the end is adorable. And yes, I had tissues, plural, because once I start crying, I go through a few like I did with this episode πŸ˜‚ In my opinion, this is the only show that truly nailed a musical episode. So many shows incorporate them for the sake of adding one, whereas with Buffy, it moved the plot along and got secrets out that people wouldn't share otherwise. It actually served the show as a whole. Personally, this is the only musical episode I love and will re-watch. I can't say how many other shows I've stopped watching because they add meaningless musicals lol.

Melanie

Also just wanted to add that Hinton Battle was a fairly big Broadway star, so it was pretty awesome to get him to play the demon.

Milamber

Hard to pick a favorite song, they are all great. But if I had to choose I think it would be the Giles and Tara song. They have the best voices in the cast, the lyrics are so powerful, and the arrangement is just chef’s kiss. This was so popular, they released the soundtrack on CD. Of course you can get it on Apple/Amazon/Spotify etc. so β€œyou can sing along” on rewatches. Enjoy :)!

JenM

I've now watched the reaction, and I have to say, you calling Xander a big fool absolutely cracked me up. It was just the way you said it. You're not wrong though. Xander definitely makes some dumb choices sometimes. Also, I didn't yet mention my favorite song in the episode, so I will do that now. Although all the songs are great and I know them by heart, my favorite is "Rest in Peace" by Spike. :)

Britney

Oh also, "i touch the fire and it freezes me"...that line sticks with me too...the whole song in fact. "I guess my friends cant face the cold" such a strong reference to depression. You just feel so empty. Nothing means anything, and your friends often just can't relate, or sometimes don't want to relate or try to understand.

x_Rhi_x

Everyone's said everything already i think haha, except, SMG really didn't want to sing in the episode until she read the script/lyrics and realised how important this moment was for buffy; revealing she was in heaven. so she changed her mind and wanted to be the one to sing it. I think she did really well considering shes not a singer

x_Rhi_x

I believe that you said you are doing the rewatch from DVD's. Be sure to watch all of the extras with this episode, Joss Whedon's commentary, 'Behind the Scenes' and "Making of...' videos. All great. BTW, I don't believe that it is mentioned in the show but the demon's name is Sweet and was played by Hinton Battle who passed away this past year at age 67. The three street sweepers and Sweet's henchmen with the head masks were played by the same dancers.

David Schmidt

It's all happy, happy, singy, singy, then all of a sudden it's not. By the end it's actually quite devastating. Where DO we go from here?

SeeJay

I never can decide which song is my favorite. But I think I like Tara's song the most if it's just going on which is my favorite voice to listen to. So angelic. Being sung so blissfully and romantically yet having a very dark double meaning that even she doesn't know about.

Jonathan Hall

Exactly the same here, my second watch of the full Buffy response from Jules, and a lot happier than the first one I did.

Michael Champion

This has taken so long for us to finally get to THE Buffy episode, so glad you loved it. Now, on the rewatch, go to the very end of the credits, it's a musical end. Also you will see just how the song lyrics more the plot along so well. Now you willl understand that the Buffy musical episode is not 'A tv show musical episode', it's 'THE tv show musical episode'. Second, yes they all sang their own songs. Third, Yes SMG had a few months of singing and dancing lessions before this was filmed. Forth, The 'Who got the mustard out' and 'Fire hydrant' singers, were the show runners David Fury and Marti Noxon.

Michael Champion

I'm under your spell Surging like the sea Wanting you so helplessly I break with every swell Lost in ecstasy Spread beneath my Willow tree You make me complete You make me complete You make me complete You make me? At least, as Xander said, they got a room!

Dyrla

I couldn’t wait for you to get to this episode! 😁. I usually only watch the YouTube edit because I don’t watch along but this time I wanted the full reaction haha. This is definitely my favorite episode of any TV show (I think I might have a soft spot, my favorite movie is moulin rouge lol)

Mathilde Sgherri

Such an amazing episode, and I'm glad that you saw the full length version (8 mins longer than a normal episode). The cast and crew deserve all the plaudits for bringing this episode to life as it took, as you can imagine, longer than the normal 8 days to film. The actors took voice and dance training whilst also filming other episodes. SMG has said that "It took something like 19 hours of singing and 17 hours of dancing in between shooting four other episodes" which is insane! All the actors sang their own lines but as you saw some sang more than others, Aly begged not to sing (although her 'I think this line's mostly filler' is my favourite) and Michelle said that she'd prefer to dance! What makes this incredible is that every song drives along the plot of this season and isnt just there to say 'hey look, we can sing'! All their secrets are out now so it will be interesting to see where they go from here. Whilst I love all the songs the standout, for me, was the duet between Giles and Tara...great lyrics sung by Tony & Amber. They also sang together in a Rocky Horror Picture Show charity event which is a fun watch. PS Loved the musical outro!!!

Dyrla

FINALLY!!!!! lol You can't imagine how bloody hard it's been not to mention this was coming LOL

Michael Short

Amber Benson is also a professional singer

Mathilde Sgherri

as far as giles goes anthony stewart head had trouble with his family being in England and him being in la shooting, he was missing his kids childhood. so he needed to be home more. it is sad though, I love him. and these young adults really do need a more adult adult around to help guide them. there are zero parents around for help and young adults often need help at that age.

*Fist pump*

Raven Dark

it was so fun watching you react to this. your initial confusion and then joy at watching this amazing episode. this episode is so well done. and yeah the cast is all so talented. some of them didn't want to sing (the actors that played willow and dawn) and dawns actress was a dancer and wanted to do that instead. but everyone was great. and I like that not only did a musical episode make sense the way they did it, but it also moved the story along in ways that would have been hard to do in a normal episode. i hate when its a musical episode in something and it doesn't progress anything or make sense that its happening. but this is fantastic. its so fun but also so sad. if you've never seen it, when you finish buffy I HIGHLY recommend reacting to dr horrible sing along blog. it was a web released musical by joss whedon during a strike that is only like an hour long and its also great. the buffy musical episode is iconic. and at the time this wasn't really a thing that shows did. this episode actually used to tour as a rocky horror style thing where it showed and there was live stuff in front of the screen and props that you'd throw or hold up at certain times. it was a lot of fun, I went when it came to my town. i am glad you enjoyed this. i loved your reaction. and yeah you'll be singing these from now on. i think I sing the spike one the most, but my voice is lower so I cant sing the women numbers well, I do better with spike and files songs. they also were able to sneak in some naughteir things with the music in this. things where xander was obviously referring to something else then stops and says tight embrace. so funny. and when willow disappears to taras lower half and tara floats up and says you make me com-plete over and over. the network didn't even want them kissing at the time.

Ashley Thomas

I’ve been dying waiting for you to get to this episode! I Knew you would love it πŸ₯°

ClaryTehSage

Myself, and I'm sure many of your followers have been looking forward to you getting to this one. Amazing episode and like you say, where do we go from here......

Daley

I am lucky enough to have seen Anthony Stewart Head play Frank N Furter in the Rocky Horror Show on stage in London, a few years before Buffy started (yes, ok, I'm old). He was phenomenal! This episode came out in an era when a few shows did musical episodes. Not one of them did it as well as this. They were usually just ordinary episodes with random singing for no reason. But here the singing had a purpose, it helped drive the plot, it revealed things to the cast that they needed to know. The only other show I've ever seen do that with a musical episode was Star Trek Strange New Worlds - and they fully admitted to being inspired by Buffy. My all time favourite episode of any TV show ever.

Aussie Mat

Ah yes, the shiny, happy musical episode where Buffy tries to kill herself. ;D

Claire Eyles

Yeah, this is one of the best episodes of Buffy. Just a nice mix of comedy, a bit of drama, some gut punches and giles singing.

Mara

I think this line's mostly filler.

zerofk

This is my favorite episode of the entire show, and I don't even usually like musicals. I can't wait to see your reaction when I get a chance to watch. I'm at work right now. 😭

Britney

some of the cast have music careers. james marsters and Anthony stewart head both have albums you can buy (marsters has a band called ghost of the robot). i recommend checking their music out. the soundtrack to this episode is also available.
