Doctor Who 4x14 The Next Doctor - Clean Edit

✨ Edit ✨ please can I add a reminder to not discuss or reference things that happen in future episodes. I know sometimes it's hard as people might be excited about things to come, but it makes it so much better for all of us when spoilers are not mentioned and I can watch the episodes without knowing what is ahead. Thank you 😌

Well, it looks like this is where the specials begin! The Doctor is on his own in this one (which is always slightly dangerous...) but I do like it when he is alone, at least sometimes. We often get to see a different side to him that way.

Is telling J the next episode stinks and she should skip it a bit of a spoiler? Where's Spoiler Karen on this one?

I'm Inevitable

There were no spoilers, only spoiler Karens.

The Dog Walker

Kind of hoping you can't find the next one and you can move onto waters of Mars, next one is a bit of a throw away and doesn't add anything but some may say it's funny.

Brendan

Maybe I'm also overthinking it, but hear me out: human languages have two meanings for heart: "blood pumping muscle" and "core of feelings". Maybe Gallifreyan does use two seperate words. I think it's fair to assume that having two hearts maybe leads to a different metaphor than having one. But when speaking English (or being translated by the TARDIS?) the Doctor uses the idiom correctly from a human pov. If he'd say "hearts"he'd consciously makes a pun which would be inappropriate at this honest moment.

Oliver

Luckily it’s smooth sailing from here

Jim

Did someone post spoilers? That's unfortunate. Is it possible to have moderators on Patreon?

This special could be dismissed as a bit of filler, were it not for the talent of the incredible, incomparable, and irreplaceable David Morrisey, whose talent matched David Tennant's in every respect. Among his many accomplishments, he crated a truly unforgettable villain on THE WALKING DEAD. Plus, he's just such a snack. :-)

Martin Holt

A beautiful Christmas episode! And it's very true what you said about saying goodbye - don't fear, although David Tennant is so special, so are others. Concerning your confusion at the beginning: Don't forget that Doctor Who is always inconsistent with their timey wimey stuff - so although the Doctor's not supposed to meet himself, it happened before - it would have been unsusual but not impossible at all to introduce the next doctor before the current one dies - and that is undoubtfully what they wanted to make us believe: That this was the 10th Doctor's last episode and that'll he regenerate into the one with the memory loss, maybe regaining his memory in the adventure with the 10th. But yay, more Tennant ahead. More possibilities to make us laugh and cry...

Oliver

This one isn't too highly rated but I have a new found appreciation after seeing it for the first time in years with your reaction. Keep em coming Juliet, many thanks for the great reactions

Lee Dawson

can we try... _not_ to make everything about SJW and wokeism etc.? I'm sure there's plenty of spaces on the internet to tell everyone off, whereas I'd personally prefer Juliette's Patreon to be more about the reactions, i.e. the episode we've just seen.

Patrick Armbruster

Most of what you wrote is spin and BS. I remember reading in 2019 at the time the change was attributed to "changing sensibilities of a modern audience" and not wanting to offend people of other "religious dispositions". If they switched back last year it's probably due raging criticism and objections from fans. DH had been creating Xmas specials for decades and it became a can't miss staple in Britain...almost a cultural zeitgeist. Trotting out that lame "Oh...we'll get better viewership on Jan 1" is hilarious. It's the excuse they came up with after the tsunami of criticism was launched at the decision. Quit being a tool.

The Dog Walker

He played "The Governor" in The Walking Dead.

The Dog Walker

Wonderful reaction, thanks Juliette! Please don't complain about the tears, with Doctor Who we often reach the highest highs (remember "Everybody Lives Rose, Just this Once!") and the lowest lows (for me it was Donna's exit and the Doctor's sort of eulogy of her to her family). When I watched this episode when it first aired, I had known the title for a week or more leading up to watching it and I knew we were at a transition point, so I really did think this was The Next Doctor, with some timey-wimey stuff happening for the transition.

Paul Hess

You're talking about a companion she hasn't met yet. I think that's where your spoiler is.

Emmy

Hi Jules, this episode was such a fun romp after the high drama of the season 4 finale. Good to have some laughs, even though, being Doctor Who, there is some heartbreak mixed in too. Glad you enjoyed it. The next special is a lot of fun too. Russell T Davies was really toying with us with the ‘fake’ registration at the end of ‘Stolen Earth’ and then calling this story ‘The Next Doctor’! Fun fact: David Tennant did a run as Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company after Season 4, partly the reason why there were only specials in 2009. So, he filmed this episode immediately after finishing ‘Journey’s End’. The original ending of that episode saw the Doctor returning to the TARDIS (after saying goodbye to Wilf) with a Cyberman lurking behind him at the console. There’s a clip of it somewhere on YouTube. Ultimately (and quite rightly!) they decided to delete that scene (excuse the pun!!) as it detracted from the emotion of the Doctor’s farewell to Wilf and Donna.

Jeremy B

Oh I love that about him forgetting he's different! I'm sure there's a reason. I just personally find it distracting that he doesn't use the plural lol.

Melanie

It’s still the Christmas Special. For a short time, while Chris Chibnall was show runner for three years, he chose to place the festive special on New Year’s Day, party because TV dramas get more viewers then than on Christmas Day. Nothing ‘woke’ about it, whatever that means. As of 2023 the show returned to 25 December and was billed as the Christmas Special. And the 2024 Christmas special has already been written and filmed too.

Jeremy B

No more tears, I just want to have a break to resupply my tissues 🤣

Juliette Gaming

I totally agree, Chris!! Tennant has only been my second Doctor so far, but he's got SUCH a knack at letting us in so deeply. He's such a delightful mix of dark, emotional, quirky... He's honestly just incredible in this role. WOW!

Juliette Gaming

"Hearts" would have been SO wonderful to use there! I wonder though if it might be seen as humourous or detract from the emotional moment. Though I also think just using the singular term may also still be distracting as he does have the two. OR (and this is where I really need to stop my brain from overthinking things) the Doctor is just so enamoured with his human friends he's met along the way, that sometimes he might even forget he's different 🥹

Juliette Gaming

I unfortunately don't have any mods on the Patreon page as you have to have a premium account to do that. It does make it harder sometimes to read the comments so I usually just wait a bit to make sure it's safe.

Juliette Gaming

Let me add THAT ALL DOCTORS are quirkie and dark. Saying he is more of the same is not a spoiler. As far as him being younger, anyone can tell that by looking at a picture. Smith was 6 years younger than Tennant when he debuted. Other than that all my other comments were personal observations or opinions. Are you a mod?

The Dog Walker

Are you a mod?

The Dog Walker

Please show me "all these spoilers"? That I said he was younger quirkier and darker?

The Dog Walker

As sad as it is, I always mentally correct him by saying "hearts". I don't know why he didn't use the plural, or if he was just saying the phrase. Maybe he wasn't sure if Jackson knew about the two hearts thing. Regardless, Tennant definitely delivers that line with such pain and heartbreak, it's hard not to get emotional 😭

Melanie

Wonderful episode, always a pleasure to rewatch it! And yep, they've gotta get you right at the end with that gut punch of "... they break my heart." Gets me teary eyed every single time. I think Tennant really does bring out a really deep and emotional side to The Doctor that always feels so sincere. Argh he's just the best! And there's even more great episodes ahead in this season!

Chris Janes

Why are you giving all these spoilers? She's made it abundantly clear multiple times that she doesn't want any spoilers for future episodes, seasons and characters.

Melanie

I got fooled when this first came out as well, I thought to myself "why are they showing a future doctor when they haven't regenerated David yet" but in my defence I was 7 at the time of this episode airing, I'm also looking forward to her reactions to the other specials as well, especially the 2nd special that was after this one

Tobly

I remember these specials well, I'm glad you liked this episode and I know you'll like the next few episodes as well (spolier: there will be more tears to come)

Tobly

The Dog Walker

Awww yay!! Perfect timing indeed 💜 this one is, thankfully, a bit less traumatic! Less tears would be welcome sometimes 😅

Juliette Gaming

I think this is my first time seeing him in anything! I agree, he would make a wonderful regulation Doctor 🥰

Juliette Gaming

David Morrissey plays the next doctor and IMO have made a wonderful regulation Doctor. Also, recently the woke braniacs over at the BBC decided to rename xmas epis as "holiday special" so as not to offend muslims, non xtians and devil worshippers.

The Dog Walker

The Doctor's belief that he has no reason to live even more heartbreaking when you remember when he dropped Martha off at the end of the Doctor's Daughter and he told her that there's always something to live for. The loss of Donna has changed him.

Dragon

Following the AMAZING and EMOTIONAL ending for Season 4 I'm looking forward to this fun romp. I remember when it first came out I had no idea who would be replacing David Tennant so the first half of this episode had me completely fooled, thinking we were watching "the next doctor" and this was the transition episode. And he would make a great one. I don't know if you had any spoilers ahead of time or if this fooled you too but I'm looking forward to watching it with you either way.

Paul Hess

That’s perfect timing! I literally just subscribed to u on here about half an hour ago and just watched your Journeys End reaction (still sniffling from the tears btw) and now I get to watch this one right after! Thank you!
