Doctor Who 3x2 The Shakespeare Code | Full Reaction

Oooh look at us go! We are going back to the past (and doesn't it seem like a while since we've done that?) and enjoying some classic literature. Slight reminders of the Dickens episode, if I'm honest! This episode was so well done, with some spooky and also funny moments.

I'm feeling a bit of... unrequited love happening 🤣 Martha seems to have herself a little crush, but the Doctor is so charismatic and interesting, who can blame her?

Enjoy the rest of your week and the few busy days left until Christmas 🥰

Doctor Who 3x2 The Shakespeare Code | Full Reaction

Comments

Him playing Hamlet is the reason we didn't get a fifth season of the RTD era in 2009.

Hugh Diffey

Didn't he actually play Hamlet once? I mean, who hasn't, but yeah.

Martin Holt

What's funny is the Sycorax is a character in the Tempest. We met an alien species called the Sycorax in the Christmas special, which was a nod to Shakespeare, but written into this episode that the Doctor gave Shakespeare the idea behind the name haha.

SeeJay

HA!! Wouldn't that be amazing!

Juliette Gaming

I love how Martha brought that up too, with somehow ruining things! It's a very beginners guide to time travel, which I would expect she knows only the basics and stereotypical stuff!

The bit about the Doctor giving Shakespeare ideas for lines is a perfect example of the Bootstrap Paradox, a classic time travel plot device. The bit about the Carrionites erasing all of human history is a perfect example of the Grandfather Paradox, another classic time travel plot device. Both in one episode? Madness.

Martin Holt

What's with the Doctor and English queens? I wouldn't be surprised if he had a run-in with Kate Middleton in the future.

Martin Holt

One of the weirder aspects of Time Travel is demonstrated by the appearance of the Queen, where she obviously knew him before he knew her. Which means that later in his own personal timeline, he visits the Queen before the events in this episode and somehow annoys the hell out of her. Time Travel basically allows people to meet each other for the first time - twice. This device was also used in Audrey Niffenegger's brilliant novel THE TIME TRAVELERS WIFE. They made a movie. Don't bother.

Martin Holt

Also important to note that the Sycorax were actually named after something in a Shakespeare play, so we got a cute little meta moment of the Doctor giving the name of an alien species in the DW universe to Shakespeare who "borrowed" it

Hugh Diffey

Thank you, Neil 💜 I hope you have an awesome lead up to Christmas, too! I'm working just a half day tomorrow and then going to take it easy until Wednesday 🥰

Juliette Gaming

Neil! I also checked out the Shakespeare actor 🤣 he WAS just so familiar, right?! I didn't know him from anything though, so I was left a bit confused. At least you got your answers. Me, it's probably from another parallel life somewhere that knows who he is haha 😄

Juliette Gaming

Sorry, I was looking at the wrong episode when i replied 🤣 I enjoyed this one and found the Doctor was in top form with all his quotes hehe! It gave off a similar vibe though to the Dickens episode, so I'm not sure if that was just me who thought that!

I like you was very happy they kept mentioning Rose. It wouldn’t really make sense for him to move on from her so soon after everything they’ve been through. The part where the doctor is almost defending Rose’s honor in this episode is one of my favorite moments of the episode for sure. I also think Martha was more upset at the idea of being sent home after one trip and being called a “novice” compared to Rose. I don’t think she expected anything to happen in that bed. Interesting thought: because the Doctor made it seem like Rose was completely fine, she most likely doesn’t understand that he’s still in the grieving stage of losing her.

Alec Campo

AHHHH that is SO CUTE!

Juliette Gaming

Hopefully the only place things will be revealed are in the episodes 💜 I think in 2024 I will have to wear my cranky pants more often and block people who spoil! Thank you so much for the beautiful well wishes! I hope the same for you and yours, and here's hoping for a wonderful and bright new year, too 🥰😊🥰

This episode is probably my least favourite of this season but don't get me wrong it's still a good episode. The next episode (for me personally) is one of my favourites though.

TDA Entertainment

Rose is special, she and the Doctor had a much closer relationship than he'd ever had before. More will be revealed... just not by me. Wonderful stuff as always Jules, thanks for sharing your journey with us. Have yourself a great Christmas and I'll catch you on the next one. <3

The Rising Ape

I feel it's important to mention that Tennant is a huge Shakespeare fan and spent the entire commentary track geeking out over all the references

Hugh Diffey

Traveling back in time to see historical events/figures was one of the features used to pitch the show back in the 1960's (they could sell it as educational so parents would want their kids to watch). I don't personally enjoy Shakespeare's work that much (probably from bad memories of reading so many of his plays in school), but I always like episodes when they go in to the past like this one.

Lime Pie

I am a member of our local theatre company and have performed in a number of number of Shakespeare's plays. The history is pretty accurate - audiences were raucous and ill-mannered, and the cast often interacted with them in ribald and hilarious ways. Don't know about Shakespeare being gay. But c'mon - actors.

Martin Holt

Hi Juliette. Thanks for another one of your excellent Doctor Who reactions. The guy who played Shakespeare looked so familiar to me but I just couldn't place where I knew him from. So off to IMDB I went and it turns out he was in two shows I watched, Jamestown, and Shadow and Bone. I think my memory is starting to fail me in my old age! (Maybe the same will also happen to you when you reach my age 😜) Thanks again Juliette. Have a great day, and hopefully a nice stress-free run up to Christmas.
